Reynolds wrap, potato, and onions on a cutting board

Next time you fire up the BBQ for a summer cookout, consider preparing these easy and delicious roasted potatoes in foil packets. They are so simple and always turn out mouth-watering! These potatoes are also the perfect meal/snack/side dish to make while camping.

foil packet potatoes – steps for making

This is my favorite way to make potatoes in the summer because it doesn’t heat up the kitchen. Plus, leftovers make really great breakfast potatoes in the morning. A prep ahead idea for camping would be to place seasoned and coated potatoes and onions in a large Ziploc bag and just bring foil along to grill. You can also use the same method for your favorite roasted vegetables. Yum!

Going camping in June! Making this! thanks!

  3. Rachel

We throw in carrots and a lump of ground beef too. Pour ketchup or A1 all over it when cooked. Yum!

    • Lauren

That’s what we do, too! (Really we throw in whatever veggies and meat we have on hand.) Call ’em hobo dinners.

      • Dawn

Yes, Lauren.. We do too. It’s from our days at Girl Scout camp. We called them Hobo Packs. So yummy!

  4. bridget

I also put green beans w garlic and olive oil or other seasonings in foil on the grill… easy clean up, doesn’t hear up the house and tastes great!

    • brindha

How long for the beans to cook? TIA.

      • bridget

It depends on if they r fresh or frozen and how many…. I probably do 15 min or so… I shake the pack once in awhile to stir it all up…

  5. Jenn

We’ve made these with bacon and cheese too. So good.

  6. brindha

Looks so tempting and yummy, will try this weekend. Thanks Lina.

  7. Erin

We do these year round in the oven. One recipe we do is ranch with bacon bits and the other you can do Italian dressing with grated Parmesan cheese. super easy and yummy.

  8. 78Brownie

Pinned it! ✔︎ This is super easy. Thanks for sharing

  9. Wanda

You could probably do this in the oven as well if you don’t have a grill like me, lol.

  10. JA

We do kielbasa with mushrooms, zucchini, onions and Italian dressing. It’s a family favorite!

  11. Queenmum

    Awesome! Thanks Lina 🙂

  12. Lynne

We do these all the time on the grill or when camping. I’ve also added bacon bits should we have a few leftover strips of bacon from breakfast. Carrots or green beans are tasty as well.

    • Kristyn

Leftover bacon? I’ve never heard of that! 😉

      • Sue

I thought the same thing. 🙂

  13. jess

Love the leftover breakfast potatoes! ! Great idea

  14. J

We make these a lot! Only add a cut up jalapeño and like half a block or more of velveeta cheese cut up! !!! So good!

  15. Sheree - Houston Realtor

Love this. I usually add squash zucchini carrots and mushrooms and a little bacon salt and olive oil. Onions and potatoes on bottom for a carmelized

  16. Susi

Try using lemon pepper for a little “bite”!! Super Delicious 🙂

  17. maflies1

Thanks for posting this. Used to make versions of these often in the oven or on the grill, depending on the season. S

I make this minus the olive oil and lay the foil packets on top of meat in broth inside a crockpot – if you can’t grill. I sometimes add those already peeled carrots with the potatoes. Cook for as long as you cook the meat.

  19. Pat

We’ve been doing this for years, only we slice the potatoes and put shredded cheese on top. We’ll have to try the chunks next time!

  20. Toni

We love salt, pepper, garlic and rosemary on ours.

  21. Rachel

We prepare ours with rosemary and garlic powder. It’s our family favorite.

  22. aV

We also do this with whatever veggies and seasonings are on hand. If available, we also add a couple of ice cubes to steam from the inside and keep the starches and sugars in the veggies from scorching.

  23. Kristy

Are you guys peeling the potatoes or just cutting?

    • Christine

If you are using the golden potatoes or regular white potatoes those skins are thin and you shouldn’t have to peel, to me that is as good as the meat of the potato:)

      • Kristy

        Thank you!!

  24. Mary

Could you use frozen cubed hash browns? If so how long do you think they would have to cook?

  25. Trish R

I make these a lot. Sometime I add granulated beef bouillon cubes. If you use vadalia onion, sliced with one beef booullion, a little butter and olive oil. (No salt). Grill in packet. Tastes almost like onion soup. Pile it on the burger or mix with the potatoes. Yum.
