    Does Roku require a subscription?

    • harlow

there r a lot of free channels that don’t require a subscription. but channels like amazon video netflix do. some u just have to create a log in account with email and that will give u access. u can link ur cable provider to it and play movies from HBO channel and stuff like that. HTH 🙂

    • Wren

My husband is saying no. We have an older model Roku. You just need wifi. Roku is just the device that allows you to access channels and also paid channels- like Netflix which requires its own subscription. Hope that makes sense.

    • Stephanie

No subscription required for roku but if you want netflix on it then you have to have a netflix account etc…as long as you have wifi you are golden 🙂 we replaced our cable a year ago next month and have never been more grateful to NOT be paying $90/month for shows…

What kind of channels are free? We want to cancel our cable too but would like to have access to some channels. (I.e. Abc, HGTV, anything, etc…)

    • Daniela

Majority of tv is free. Cbs.com, abc.com, fox.com, amc.com. I am cable bill free and the only thing I miss is live sports. Sometimes my area is on blackout so we just go to a bar and watch. I am on Prime and that fills in my movie and binge older tv show gaps. Considering adding Netflix but waiting for a good 3 free months promo.

      • alicia

You can watch cha.com frrom the Roku?

        • Daniela

Not sure what cha is but if you can see it on your tablet or computer, you can see through roku.

          • Chris

This is not true at all. To use the apps from tv channels you need to have tv service and log in with your cable/satellite info.

You can get a bunch of content from local and pay channels with Hulu plus, if you use bing rewards you could get a month as a reward and can stack the free months.

All local network channels are free but I have DirecTV’s Family package. The one they don’t show in their package offerings. You have to ask for it. It has HGTV, DIY, Food Network, various Disney channels and most important to me, Hallmark channel. There are more channels too but it is a very slimmed down package for $29.99 that seems to be their last ditch effort to keep a customer. I just really wanted Hallmark. I’m loving all the holiday movies!

so just to confirm..there are no live sports channels include? no espn? that would be my only reason to purchase..if anyone knows this please let me know! thanks!

    • Stephanie

There are live sports channels…for example we are die hard baseball fans so we paid $100 for the entire year to get every single baseball game of the REGULAR season…I know they have it for football too…you would just need to find your sport and see if they have it. 🙂

      • Daniela

Yes, my apologies, I meant free local sports are hard to find online. For example I have apple tv in living room and when the New York Red Bulls played last time, I was on blackout. I could hear the game but screen was black on the MLS app. But I could watch the games in other areas. It takes a lot to get used to, to not just turn on TV and find something to watch. But I save $120 a month and now pay less than that per year. Before cutting the cord I would def make a list of what channels are 100% required and see if you can see them online via wifi. I have free MLB app through my t-mobile cell so I am good on baseball!

    • JA

From what i understand, you get no live sports. If you buy a package, like Gamecenter or MLB Extra Innings, you get every out of market game, but not locals. So since i’m in Pittsburgh, i cant watch any Pirates or Penguins games. Which sucks, because if I’m watching tv in the evenings thats all I watch. So i’m stuck with a disgustingly high cable bill because I love sports. Not fair😭

    • Wendy

If you subscribe to sling $20/ month you get ESPN!

  5. Shelby

Snagged one with my Visa Checkout $20 credit. Awesome deal! Thanks!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Yay! So glad you could grab one Shelby! You are so welcome!

  6. Laura

Can you purchase sports packages through roku? Or get Amazon sling through roku? Our biggest issue is sports, particularly football.

  7. Kati

If you prepay 3 months of sling tv they will give you the roku stock for free.

  8. Jen N

    It sold out. Bummer.

    • Olga

You can also get it directly from roku and a few other retailers through the weekend I believe.

  9. Katie

I used my Visa Checkout to get one! I got it because we’re huge fans of JellyTelly (Christian tv & movies for kids), and you can download the JellyTelly app onto the roku. (We’ve been broadcasting from iPhone onto the Apple TV, which ties up my phone!)

    • Laura

How does that work exactly? Do you have to pay for the app and how do you download an app to the roku?

  10. Lea

Sold out online and not available for instore pick up 🙁

  11. Heather

I wonder if they restocked, I just got one now on Best Buy.

  12. juli

I purchased the for Walmart black friday for $25. Do we know if its the same or is this Best buy one better?

  13. Patsy

It’s the same. Walmart cancelled my order with an out of stock message.
