I think you forgot one ingredient in your list 😉

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Oh goodness! thanks! I’ll fix

    • Thomas Weaver

I have used this recipe with several different flavor cake mixes and all were successful. However, the one that seems to be the most requested is using a Devil’s Food Cake Mix and reducing the butter to 1/2 stick (1/4 cup) and adding 1/2 cup of creamy peanut butter.

This classic flavor combination is everyone’s favorite amongst my family and friends.

  2. Jess

    Thanks for the recipe Lina.
But I think they will be so sweet with the added powdered sugar? Coz the cake mix already have enough sugar in it..I may be wrong!!

    • Ellen

      Agree…too much sugar and butter

      • Aysha

Well you’d be adding that much oil if you are to make cake anyways, so it’s not like added butter on top of the oil that the cake box calls for.

      • jacknsally2017

The butter is not extra, the cake mix calls for butter, usually more than 1/2 cup, The powdered sugar will not make the cookies overly sweet.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Well it’s actually a little less sweet with the cream cheese, but you can skip it! 🙂

    • Heather C.

No, the powdered sugar won’t make these too sweet at all. People normally put frosting on a cake and that doesn’t make it too sweet. 🙂

    • AnnaMarie Sanderson

Substitute 1/2 the butter for pumpkin puree or apple sauce, then add a little cinnamon

  3. Tammy

    Sounds yummy!

  4. JA

Yummy! I’m always looking for the perfect soft sugar cookie recipe. Can’t wait to try this.

  5. Heather C.

I have never tried this version… Sounds yummy with the cream cheese! Here is the recipe I always use… Lemon cake mix is the best imo, but chocolate cake mix with the addition of chocolate chips is amazing too!

    **Ingredients-
    1 box cake mix
2 cups Cool Whip whipped topping thawed
    1 egg
    1/2 cup powdered sugar

    **Instructions-
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium bowl, combine the cake mix, Cool Whip and egg. Stir until well mixed. Place the powdered sugar in a small bowl. Drop the cookie dough by teaspoons into the powdered sugar and roll the dough to coat. Place the balls 1 1/2 inches apart on a baking sheet that has been covered with a non-stick baking mat or sprayed with cooking spray. Bake the cookies for 10 minutes, or until barely brown. Remove the cookies from the cookie sheet to a cooling rack and allow them to cool. Makes 4 dozen.

**These cookies will stick to the pan, so be sure to coat the cookie sheets with non-stick spray.** Use any flavor cake mix that you’d like!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Yum sounds great! Thanks Heather

For those excited to try these, but who don’t have all these ingredients on hand, simple cake mix cookies can use any flavor dry cake mix (I love using lemon!) with 2 eggs and 1/3 to 1/2 cup of vegetable oil (depending on how much dry mix there is, more oil for more dry mix). Mix together well. Form into balls. Place on cookie sheet. Bake in preheated oven at the cake mix suggested temperature for around 10 minutes (depends on the size of the dry cake mix and how big the balls are).

    • Michele

Yes! This is what I do too! It is a recipe from Allrecipes.com. It is basically just one egg less than what the box requires. I use lemon cake. Yummy!

  7. Emily

I’ve been making these for years. They are delicious! They’re always a hit. No one eats cookies for the health benefits, by the way. I recommend using a pampered chef small cookie scoop (or similar brand). I once accidentally used a lemon cake mix and they were an awesome accident : )

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Yes agree lemon is awesome! Thanks Emily

    • AnnaMarie Sanderson

You should try the Spice Cake Mix and sub 1/2 the oil/butter with chopped up apple pie filling or pumpkin puree and add cinnamon to the sugar. At this time of year Strawberry Cake works great with some mini semi sweet morsels (like Choc covered strawberries… ) mmm now I am hungry!! 🙂

  8. Jac

This is a cookie version of the famous St. Louis recipe for “gooey butter cake”, which calls for the cream cheese, butter, & powdered sugar. I’m sure any other version of cake mix would also turn out well, but the butter cake mix will produce a more authentic gooey butter cake flavor If that’s what you’re aiming for.

  9. Michille

I want to try these and add almond extract . I’m obsessed with alimond in cookies. I added it to my cookie frosting and it was amazing,

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Oh yum! Love that idea!

    • Susan

I’m gonna use almond flavoring with a cherry chip cake

  10. Luv

Can I make it without powdered sugar and how can I make it more paleo friendly?

    • Jen D

The paleo doesn’t allow grains or sugar, so I would say probably don’t make cookies at all if you are concerned with that….kind of hard to make cookies without flour and sugar and if you tried they wouldn’t taste good anyways. Why not stick with a paleo treat instead like a dark chocolate bark with nuts and coconut?

  11. BreB

I love these with red velvet cake mix and white chocolate chips!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Yum! Thanks for the tip!

  12. Bon

    Sounds delish, thank you Lina😊

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      You’re welcome thanks for reading!

  13. NicoleF

Yes, for a healthier, paleo, gluten-egg-dairy-nut-sugar-oil free version eat a SALAD and don’t read COOKIE recipes.

  14. Jen S

These are so amazing!! My son said they were the BEST cookies he has ever had! I don’t think I will ever use cake mix to make cake again. I added white chocolate chips to half and they were fantastic too. I can hardly wait to try the different cake mix flavors! I am making my second batch tomorrow. Thanks so much for sharing this easy recipe for amazing yumminess.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Thanks for reading and sharing Jen!

      • Jen S

Do you know if there a fun alternate recipe for brownie cookies??

        • Jen S

I am not finding one on betty crocker for brownie mix cookies but there are some posted on other sites.

  15. AnnaMarie Sanderson

I use this type of recipe if I find a box of cake mix that has gone past it’s date. I add a tsp of baking powder to make fluffier. I also do seasonal cookies this way. Use spice cake mix & sub Pumpkin Puree or apple pie filling in the fall for the butter. This time of year the strawberry cake mix with mini morsels reminds me very much of chocolate covered strawberries. In the winter do Black Forrest Cookies by using chocolate cake mix with cherry pie filling.

  16. Becky

Try with funfetti cake!! Soooooo delicious

  17. V

I read everyone’s comment to try and figure out what kind of cake mix I should get tomorrow with my coupon at Target. Now, I think I need more coupons, so I can try all these yummy ideas.

  18. tina spinelle

Target has Betty Crocker boxed cake mixes for $1 until 12/24/16!
Going to try devils food cake mix today!

  19. Gail

I’m in Canada and I’ve never seen butter cake mix and lemon only the odd time. What would be a good substitute? White or yellow cake mix?

    • Lina D

Yes white or yellow. You can also do a similar idea with red velvet cake mix instead of lemon 👍🏻

  20. nene

can i add coco to make choc butter cookie

  21. Corinne

I have tried many different cake mixes and they have all turned out amazing. I also have replaced cake mix with cookie mix like peanut butter and snickerdoodle for the holidays. Always turns out good! Next I will try brownie mix in place of the cake mix😉

  22. Katie

SO good! Does anyone know why there are little orange flecks in the cookies? Chemical baking reaction? I thought I was going crazy as there is nothing orange in the ingredients! 😄

  23. Karla

I’ve done this recipe with triple fudge cake mix, chocolate chips & some espresso powder to enhance the chocolate! They were totally addicting!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Yum! Sounds delicious 😋
