We found that the best prices for top soil are at Walmart. Regular price is around $1.50. We are in FL.

      Thanks for sharing Joy!

My dollar tree has potting soil for $1!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Sweet!

  3. Erin

Love this deal! I wasn’t looking for it yet though…seems earlier than previous years. So, thanks for the heads up!!!

    • Angela V.

I agree that it seems way earlier! Guess I’ll buy now though because this is a great deal!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re welcome Erin!

My husband owns a trucking company and it is WAY cheaper to get a load of mulch or stone by the truck load rather than by the bag if you are doing a larger area. Unless you live in the middle of nowhere where gas wouldn’t be worth the money b/c they only get between 3-7 miles per gallon. My friend spent over $1000 on stones for her yard and we priced the same stones from the quarry for $550 with trucking…. worth looking into to see if anyone local will deliver for you!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks for the tip Katie! Good to know!

    • A

Yes we have been researching building a patio and will save a huge amount of money by buying sand and gravel in bulk versus buying in the bag.

    • Pat

I guess it depends on where you live. In my area l can go pick up a yard of mulch for $24 – $30. A yard is 27 cubic feet. These bags are 2 cubic yards, making them $1 per Cubic foot, or $27 per yard.

Open the link it says Error?

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

How odd, are you by chance on a mobile device? I am finding the links to load up for me as I click through. Hope that helps!

While this brand might be slightly more expensive, I find that the color lasts longer so I’m not purchasing as often. My experience with the brands of mulch at Walmart are that there is bits of trash and plastic mixed up with the mulch and the color fades quickly. I don’t like the quality of the land fill mulch either but some people don’t care because it is free. If you have a large area to cover and don’t mind foreign bits mixed in, you might want to check with your local landfill’s yard recycling area to see what they offer.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks for such helpful feedback Andrea!

Where we are it’s much cheaper to get mulch by the bag on these specials (4/$10 or 5/$10) than by the yard. For a cubic yard of mulch it’s $60-100. This is $27/cubic yard. I also find it much less messy. We wheelbarrow around the bags, drop them around the yard and then open and spread. No mess in the driveway and yard.

    • Amanda

I agree. We did the truckload one year and I will never do it again. I do the mulch work so it is so much easier for me to throw a few bags in a wheelbarrow, open the bags and dump in my flower beds. It was so much work having to shovel all that mulch. It usually takes me a couple of weeks so storing bags is also a lot easier than having a pile taking up space.

Our area Lowe’s has it on sale 4 for $10. And I get an error too when I click the link, but may be because our area is priced differently. 🙂

  9. Melanie

Not on sale here in Utah 🙁

  10. Brian

  11. Ivan

Good stuff, all we use in our yard. Color last all year.

What is the difference in the sta-Green potting soil and their garden soil? Can I still use the garden soil to pot indoor plants with?

    • David

Hey Megan – there are three main types of bagged ‘soil’…

Top Soil basically a filler and most honest companies market it as something used for “filling” and “leveling” It’s not ideal for outdoor gardening unless it’s enriched with compost/manure, and sand or peat moss or the like for drainage, and is an even worse choice for potted plants. It’s also not uncommon to find pieces of junk like plastic, glass, etc. in bags of top soil.

Garden Soil is along the lines of Top Soil, but is usually of much better quality. It’s much less likely to contain the junk and contains more organic matter, compost, and other things that help with plant nutrition and garden drainage. This is often supremely overpriced, however, and with some elbow grease and prep work you can turn topsoil into more of a “garden soil” on your own for much less than you can buy garden soil for. The exception is that you can usually catch some of the better brands of garden soil going on sale for $2 early spring, which is a great deal.

Potting soil is what you need for your indoor plants. Potting soil actually contains no real “soil” (as in dirt) at all, but usually a mix of loam, sand, peat, and other organic matter. This is necessary for potted plants for drainage reasons. Potting soil is usually more expensive than topsoil because potting soil basically has to be created by combining other things and can’t just be scooped up off the ground somewhere.

In the end you “can” plant any kind of plant in any kind of soil and potentially have some degree of success, but your plants will be much better off when planted in the appropriate type of soil.

Thanks David. That was really helpful. I live in Colorado and have a black thumb… Anymore advice you can give me for planting a veggie garden?

      • Shawna

David, WOW! Thanks for all the info it’s invaluable. So nice of you.

      • Paula

Thanks too David for the answer and Meagan for asking.

I love this mulch. I purchased 4 bags less than a month ago when they were 4 for $10.00. I got the black (it was my first time going with black) and It looks really nice. I actually got 10 more bags online yesterday for $20.00 and my landscaper added them today along with some nice plants I found at Lowe’s on clearance for .50 per 6 pack. Last week at Lowe’s I got the non premium mulch also in the 2 cu bags on special for $1.00 each. I got 15 bags of red and plan on using those in my back yard which is more tropical. I love when I can get an awesome deal on mulch each season because we just add the new on top of the old so it doesn’t require as much.
