Am I the only one that knows absolutely nothing about this silly Pokemon Go craze?? I just don’t understand it. LOL What is the objective of it?

    • Susan ELLSWORTH

My kids got me into it (they are 27 and 22). Now I go on a walk every day/night. I have walked about 40 km in the last 12 days!!! And my daughter who is a video gamer – now actually leaves her room! LOL

I agree… I do know about Pokemon, Pikachu, card game, from when my son got involved with this 20 years ago when it was a basic card game, collecting cards. But I have no desire to play this new version and sharing my contacts, location, etc. Local NPR station (Iowa) is airing a segment about this new game as I type this comment. Very informative.

    • Rebecca

I asked my husband, he said you basically follow app around to try to catch the pokemon, which of course, are fake creatures in the game…. So I fail to see the appeal lol. My husband is in military & they actually had meetings where they cautioned against using this app, apparently they’ve had people walk out in front of cars & even walk onto flight line(hello jail time or getting shot!) trying to catch the Pokemon. Ridiculous.

    • Starbeamer

It is a game where you collect digital pocket monsters (pokemon) by walking around. They appear around you and you can search for them. Pokestops (basically digital landmarks) refill your items and lead you to cool places. It is a fantastic way to get out of the house and get those steps in (as long as you are watching where you are going.) It is a social game, so play with your friends, join the same team and take over gyms for in game currency.

tl;dr – the appeal is collection and social experience.

@Rebecca – by your logic, does any video game appeal to you? There are digital farming games like Harvest Moon and those are digital vegetables no one eats or The Sims where your digital dolls have digital relationships. Shovel Knight, Bastion, Zelda, etc. I can just keep going. They are all digital and so, by your logic, what is the worth?

      • Kelly

Social experience? Are you kidding me? How about actually get out of the house and socialize with people instead of being dependent on a smartphone. Join a book club, a photography club (I heard people walk around their town and take photos, imagine that!) or join a gym. It’s pretty sad if you need an app as an excuse to get out of the house and walk. Boy, people are so easy to manipulate these days.

        • Starbeamer

I am not kidding. A smart phone is just a tool. With a smart phone, you can read those books for your book club, take photographs and much more in one device instead of several. Smart phones have revolutionized modern life.

Yes, it is a social experience. Pokemon Go gets people out of the house with their friends because it is fun to explore with people you love. It also encourages people to talk to each other instead of just sticking to their own groups so much, encouraging community rather than cliques.

Sad that they need an excuse? Everyone needs an excuse to do things. Those people walking around and taking photographs around their town are getting out to take the photographs. No one just does something for no reason. If getting fresh air or exercising is the reason, then that’s the reason, but there is always a reason.

I could use your own logic to say anything. I hate gyms because I find them boring and tedious, so by your logic, I would find it pretty sad that people need the excuse of going to a gym in order to get exercise or get out of the house. However, I know that my opinion is not the only correct one, so I think loving going to the gym is fine, but not for me. Stop judging people for having hobbies that you don’t enjoy or find value in. Not everyone thinks the way you do.

          • Jess

            Well said!

          • Allison

Thank you for this. Really! I am so glad to see people who share the same opinion.
I have very bad depression, and it’s already so hard to make myself get out of the house. People say to “just be happy” to me, but I don’t think they understand what depression can do to your motivation. With this game, I’ve met so many people who I would have never spoken to before. I’ve gotten so much exercise, and I would have never done that either! I don’t understand people being so negative about this game. I haven’t hurt anyone by playing. I can’t be the only one here who grew up with Pokemon and wanted to run around catching them. All the negative ones out there, please try something for yourself before you complain.

        • Ang

ive never seen people socialize at a gym (other then people showing up together). Most of the time people socialize while drinking or eating, so i guess this is a more active alternative.

        • Julie

          Sad?

It’s sad? Thanks for your opinion but who are you to look down on anyone else’s hobbies? Just because you don’t understand the appeal, doesn’t mean others don’t. It’s better to be quiet if you have nothing nice to say.

      • Rebecca

Starbeamer, I do actually play video games with my family, I meant I personally don’t get the appeal of this one, as far as running around trying to find things.. That said I have not played it & different strokes for different folks. The only thing I find ridiculous is people not being smart about it, as I mentioned, putting themselves in dangerous situations. And this is adults we are talking about. If people are careful with it & it’s getting them out of the house when they normally would have stayed in,then go for it. I do find that a little sad though, but that’s a different issue all together. My post was not meant to be confrontational & I did not think it was mean in any way, but I’m sorry if that’s how you took it. ❤

        • Starbeamer

@ Rebecca, Ok. That makes more sense. Just because you don’t like this game doesn’t mean you don’t like another one. I didn’t mean to come off as angry, I just want to understand your point of view and knew I was only getting an oversimplified version. I could have worded my response better. Sorry about the confusion!

I do agree about people being stupid. The app cannot force people to walk across the street without looking or trespass. Those actions are on them. People really should be more careful.

      • Judy

@Starbeamer, I agree with everything you said. To me, I feel that the ones who don’t understand the game are the ones to talk negatively about the game. They have been misguided to believe that every negative thing they hear or read about it, is what makes it a pointless game. We can sit here all day and explain why we like it as a game because we’ve been playing it, but it would be impossible for them to list the logical reasons why they hate it because they’ve never played it. People are quick to dislike what they don’t know or what they are unfamiliar with.

  2. Ang

im thinking of starting to play (im 23) just get deals. i noticed the other day my local platos closet was offering a % off depending on what rank you are. i also think the dangers are no worse then texting or taking selfies.

    • SK

I agree, I love all the cool new technology that allow us to do many more things than we used to but it’s all up to us to use it to our advantage and not get ourselves killed.

    • Heather C.

Totally agree with you. The dangers are there whether you’re playing Pokemon GO, or using your phone in any other way- texting, selfies, using facebook, etc… and not paying attention to whats going on around you. And I don’t understand the hype about this app having access to your contacts, camera, location etc… A TON of apps use this information. There’s nothing wrong with Pokemon GO.

  3. Danny

Interesting how two weeks ago everybody was talking about the serious stuff happening around the country and then suddenly Pokemon is all over the news. I guess the sheep need to be distracted from real problems. And hey, it’s working.

    • Courtney

Maybe the sheep want to find a little light and happiness in all the darkness lately.

  4. Rachael

I know when you get a shopping pass to just try the store for a day they charge 10% fee when you check out, does anyone know if there will be the same fee with this shopping pass?

    • Laura

      You can bet on it

  5. april

Hey if free stuff and good deals are connected to it i might have to download it .

  6. Jamie

Stores have definitely caught onto the Pokemon Go craze. When I hope on the app and play, the shopping centers have an abundance of pokemon that pop up around the surrounding area. Its obvious they’re dropping pokemon lures (promotes pokemon to pop up in the area) to bring in business. What a brilliant idea for them to drop lures to keep kids entertained and encourage business while mom and dad are busy shopping.

  7. stacy

To all y’all that are complaining: just calm down and let people enjoy things. Doesn’t appeal to you? Don’t play.

  8. Karen

I just started it myself. Tmobile has it this week where players can play without it messing with our high speed data so I decided to give it a try. That and 50% off power accessories is part of our weekly freebies. I hope it’s worth it. I need to get out and walk more.

  9. Bethany

It’s much more fun to read the stupid things that people do because of this game. Google it——you’ll be laughing your arse off!!!

    • Linda

In my town some dude road his bike, in his pajama pants, to the police station to catch a pokemon or battle. Police recognized him and arrested him. (He was a wanted man). lol! Fabulous! Personally, I love this game. I have a 21 year old son and an 8 year old. I’m reliving my older child’s love for Pokemon through new eyes. That being said, there are many people not being very wise about the game.

  10. beth

I don’t understand why so many ppl get so mad over the whole Pokemon craze. This is the world we live in, kids glued to their electronics, so if this is how they’ll get exercise/socialize, so be it. And as someone else already mentioned, with everything terrible going on lately with us, couldn’t we all just use some kind of distraction?

  11. Judy

I personally love playing Pokemon Go and think it’s a brilliant game. There is no need to spend any money on it because everything can be collected with the effort and time you put in. I remember watching the Pokemon show when I was 12 and now I’m 28, and I still find it fun. I think it’s beneficial in getting people walking and also helping people become more social. I’ve talked to people by comparing Pokemon, battling gyms together, and knowing more about them. There’s so much more than just collecting Pokemon. If you think it’s only about walking around and collecting Pokemon, then you have been misguided. You have to take into account the strength (CP) of the Pokemon, their types, and abilities, and find the right gym to battle. There’s also collecting stardust, candy, experience (XP), and potions, in order to heal, evolve, or power up your Pokemon. People may think it’s a silly or pointless game, but there’s so much more to it. In fact, in battles, the same team (no matter who you are), get to battle together to take over a gym or to build prestige for their gym. This is how it brings people together. It also requires strategy because every Pokemon have different CP levels, HP levels, and abilities. If my whole post is confusing to you, you probably do not know much about the game, and are too quick to judge it. Some people give the game a bad rep because they become too into it and do not play with caution or common courtesy. But all in all, I would say it’s a fantastic game and once you can understand it, you will be blown away with the amazing programming of the game.

    • zelenenki

Well said, thank you, I love this game too… for all the story and options behind it, not just for collecting thing. People judge just by photos over internet without even installing the game.
      Pocket monsters are awesome!

  12. Jenna

I play and I’m 31. there are 3 pokestops and a gym in one of the parks in the area. Ud be surprised how many people ull see grouped up in the grass there coz they are all next to each other or how many people walking. Teens, adults with kids. Better than getting into trouble 🙂

  13. Candace

We have a lake in my town, and I’ve always thought it was a sad, stinky little place, with no appeal. There are now about a dozen pokestops clustered all around the gazebo on the island. All day, every day, it is packed with families. While the trash cans by the lake are packed, there is less trash lying around the lake (maybe too many witnesses to get away being a litter bug?) One afternoon a young man was there playing on his guitar, so we had live music. One day a young women was selling Henna Pokemon tattoos. One day a few little kids were selling cookies and punch. Dozens of people were having picnics. All the little ones were running around trying to hatch their eggs, and talking to each other about their Pokemon. The adults were talking to little kids they had never met, patiently discussing their favorite Pokemon. Sometimes people were out fishing while their kids played, teaching their kids to fish also. I mean seriously, it like a block party every night, with people getting out and getting acquainted. The lake is being taken better care of. It still stinks like goose poop though 🙁 I live right next to the lake, and the island is about a two block walk. I have been taking my kids each day. It’s been a lot of fun. My oldest is way into Pokemon, but my two year old is a Pokemon freak! Sometimes we’ll all go as a family, sometimes my husband will let my oldest take his phone and it’ll be just me and my son pokehunting and grabbing a dessert. To each their own, but aside from the dumbies who don’t pay attention, I think it has been great for our little town.

    • Linda

      I love reading this!

    • Quin

In Orlando Florida unaware Pokemon players are getting robbed near a lake here.

  14. Reilly

Just Japan using you to walk through America while recording and collecting data for them, coordinates and landmarks…..

  15. Christina

To me it kind of is like geocaching, but with a social aspect. Its awesome to see so many teenagers out and about together. For many years they would be stuck inside and attached to their phones, tablets, or computers. Now they have a reason to get outside snd interact with each other.
