Energy Kit Hip2SaveDid you know that many energy/power companies across the country offer their customers FREE Energy Saving Kits?

Yes, it’s true and the proof is in my pictures! 😃

Idaho Power Box

Since I live in Idaho and use Idaho Power, I was able to head over here, enter my 10-digit account number found on my Idaho Power bill, and then follow the instructions to request my free kit.

Idaho Power Energy Kit

As you can see from the pictures in this post, my kit contained a whopping 9 LED Light Bulbs, an LED night light (perfect for my kid’s bathroom), high-efficiency showerhead, faucet aerators for the kitchen and bath, digital thermometer to check different temperatures, shower timer, and quick-start guide.

Obviously, the availability of these kits vary based on where you live, your power usage etc. However, if you have a few extra minutes, I highly encourage you to check out the website for your particular power company and search for free energy kit.

Typical New York doesn’t seem to have one! One of the most expensive states to raise a family and we always seem to be shafted on stuff.. NBPR just to name a few things. We used to be able to to them but stopped early this year, that was a lot of money I counted on for school clothes shopping, birthday gift and Christmas! Just makes living on 1 income a little more interesting!

    • Anny

      hi Melissa ,

We just had con Edison stop by the apartment and change the light bulb , shower head on past week. You might want to call and check if you have con Edison. 🙂 I hope this will help you

      • There's

        We’re national grid here

  2. Rachel

Ours in Michigan does a walk through where they show you ways to save energy and give you a lot of the same things you had pictured. It took about an hour or so but it was definitely worth it!

  3. DianeNC

Only good for home owners – not renters – but thanks for the heads-up!

  4. candace

I’m waiting for mine to come in the mail hopefully soon in WI. Supposed to be a powerbar and 3 lights. There was also a 2nd option with a showerhead.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Oh awesome!

  5. Susan Crawford

We had this through Indiana Michigan Power and the state and they stopped it. They claimed it was too expensive. I had it done, and it took about an hour and they even put pip wrap on some of our water lines. They replaced all our light bulbs. It has been a saving.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Glad to hear it has helped save!

  6. EJ

Indiana/Michigan Power Companies provide one as well. Simply go to the website (see below) you will need to log in. I received my kit last year.

    https://www.indianamichiganpower.com

  7. Susan Crawford

eeng8d the picture reminded me that they also replaced the aerators on the sinks. But the stuff Colin got was much more than what we had done. Nice

  8. nydia

In Florida we get free water saving shower heads (2 per household) and light bulbs. There are also rebates for installing water saving toilets, faucets and shower heads.

    • Supermom

How would I go about getting this? Thanks for your feedback!

      • Jenn

Fl girl here too! Tampa Electric. Never heard of this. Please share! Thanks!

        • Flgurl

Tampa electric has this also. You have to call and ask for an energy audit. A technician will come to your house tell you how you can save energy and give you light bulbs. They will also go in your attic to see if your house is well insulated. If not, they work with contractors to get your attic well insulated at little to no cost.

          • nydia

Check with your electric and water co. I found all the info online when I purchased my home a few years ago.

    • Laurel

Hi! I live in Fl…how do i go about this?

    • Alison

I live in Florida! How do you get the shower heads?

    • rebekah

I live in Florida. How do I get this?

    • Rebecca

I’m in the panhandle & have GulfPower, I don’t think it’s with them.

    • april

WOW I HAVE FPL AND NEVER HEARD OF IT I NEED TO CHECK

    • corinne

I didn’t see florida on Dukes energy list for getting it

  9. Jessica

If anyone finds one for Georgia power, let me know cause I couldn’t. Would be nice to get something back after paying these crazy high summer rates and 60+ days of over 90 degree heat.

    • Caitlin

Jessica, you can get a free Nest thermostat from GA power by switching to Smart Usage plan. I just did yhis, and am saving money already!!

  10. Jen

Any advise on how to deal with other electric supply company’s sales rep? I have had few people knock on my apartment and forcing me to enroll in their electric supply. They won’t even understand “I am not interested in signing up”. Horrible experience

    • Alison

I used to get them too and simply stopped opening the door when they knock. Like a lot of sales people, their job depends on not taking no for an answer.

    • Kara

Might sound mean but I put up a sign saying no solicitors this includes religious stuff and haven’t had a knock since

    • Eunice

@Jen, just don’t open theh door and basically ignore them as if nobody’s home. That’s what I do everytime somebody would knock on my door. They just Knock once or sometimes twice and they would stop once they hear my dogs barking behind the door LOL.

  11. Erika

Nydia, where in Florida are you, if you don’t mind me asking? I live about 45 mins from Tampa and wonder if it’s region based or for everyone. Thanks!

  12. Misti

    non for Washington 🙁

  13. Brandi

I ordered one here in Wisconsin. Thank you for the tip!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re welcome Brandi!

  14. Gretchen

We get free light bulbs in the mail at random from Puget Sound Energy, a couple days a ago we got an email asking if we wanted them to send them to us (and of course I said yes)

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Oh cool! Glad you could score the free light bulbs!

  15. melissa

OG&E does not offer this. I hate our power company.

  16. debern

SoCal Gas offers a shower aerator and three faucet aerators–one kit per household, every three years. You just need to provide the last four digits from your gas bill. I remember getting free energy-saving light bulbs from the power company several years ago too.

  17. ohiogirl

Thanks for the heads up. AEP Ohio has a similar program. I answered some questions and requested my kit. Excited to see what it contains. I also see we meet the requirements for additional energy efficiency programs. I’ll be contacting them tomorrow to learn more. Thanks for always helping us save $!

    • Melissa

Where did you see this/sign up for it?

      • ohiogirl

Hi Melissa. Try aepohio.energysavvy.com. I filled out an energy profile for our home and was able to request a kit at the end.

People’s gas offers several energy saving items for home owners

    • Brey

How do you go about this for people’s gas?

  19. Jessie

We have Duke Energy in the area of Indianapolis in which I live. We received a mailer which simply provided instructions to tear off a portion of it, which then turned into a postcard (postage paid). We just had to send it back and within a few weeks we received 8 or so light bulbs in the mail!

  20. Hilary

We received one of these years ago, but I just requested another. We have the night lights in our laundry room and hallway and got a great power strip too. Thanks!

  21. Cara

This is worth checking out- http://www.myenergykit.org. If your child’s school is participating in this program through Duke Energy then you can receive a free kit. Also must be a Duke Energy customer.

  22. Charlene

    Does Pennsylvania have this?

    • Charlene

PP&L in Pennsylvania..sorry this was cut out of my original post.

  23. sandra

    Thanks!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      YW!

  24. Kevin

If you live in CA, there’s a company called ohmconnect that will pay you to save electricity during specified time and days. If you use less than what they expect you to use during specified hours, they’ll pay you based on how little energy you use. You’ll get $20 or $40 if you’re a SoCal Edison customer if you use my link after your first participation. Funds are transferred to PayPal once you reach $20 I think.

  25. staci

Anyone know about an kit for Arizona ?

  26. Susie

In Georgia, our local power company offers heat pump financing that basically pays for itself. The energy savings with a more efficient unit offsets the monthly payment so the power bill is about the same. It’s like getting a free heat pump!

    • Jane

If I may ask, where in Georgia or what power company? Thanks.

      • Susie

North Georgia, check with your local EMC. Several of my husbands co workers had told him about it so we decided to try it. They were 100% right, even with a really hot summer.

  27. Kathy

I live in upstate New York. We have National Grid for our company. Don’t think they do anything like this unfortunately.

  28. Mandi

In Illinois, Nicor Gas offers kits similar to these. Also available are energy assessments (where you schedule a walk thru of your home and they will tell you ways your house can be more energy efficient) and there are rebates for purchasing energy saving equipment (such as thermostats, furnaces, etc). Check out nicorgasrebates.com. ComEd also has rebates for replacing certain appliances, so be sure to check their website too.

  29. aimtolaugh

FLORIDA: sign up for a free home energy survey here: https://www.fpl.com/save/programs/onsite-energy-survey.html?cid=aliasinhome

I couldn’t find specifically the shower head and light bulb promo (but their promos change – my friend got several hundred dollar rebate to blow insulation into her roof and when I called a few months later they no longer offered it). Keep checking FPL.com for promos!

  30. buckeyemom

I contacted my local electric company (Ohio Edison) & sadly they discontinued this program a few years ago…instead they offer free tips on their Web page.

    • Leah

I just checked with The Illuminating Company (up in Cleveland) and I found the link for the kits…only for it to say it’s been discontinued. Oh well.

  31. Malinda

In Tennessee you can go to http://www.2escore.com to get free energy audits, possibly free energy kits, and rebates on energy saving items for your home through TVA and partnering electric cooperatives.

  32. Brian

Dominion Virginia Power ties their program to age (>60) and income (120% of poverty level or less…). No freebies.

  33. Min

Does anyone know if Washington DC offers something like this or equivalent?

  34. Pat

Not for Arkansas that I can find.

  35. Juli

In Oregon it is Portland General Electric that does this! Got my kit last year!!!

  36. Lisa

Any one know of any offers for Connecticut? We have one of the highest rates in the tri-state area.

  37. Heather

Hello does anyone know if Oklahoma OG &E has, anything like this I signed up for smart hours. Those light bulbs would be great……Thanks in advance to any fellow okies

  38. Brittni

I got a kit from DTE Energy just for completing a survey online. No walkthrough necessary. 🙂

  39. Denise Johnson

Late to the party, but is available in swPA?

  40. Lillian Cassara

In Ohio if you have Obio Edison, Toledo Edison, or The Illuminating Company, you request an EEK and it is free. When you receive an Energy Efficiency Kit, it includes two three-way LEDs lightbulbs, three LED night lights, one filter whistle, one faucet aerator, one shower head, and a seven-outlet advanced power strip. (A filter whistle is supposed to let you know when your furnace filter is at least 50% clogged and needs changed.)
