Does anyone know if the WD my passport would work with mac out of the box or do I need to reformat it first?

You need to reformat using disk utility or when you plug it in the Mac the Time Machine should ask you if you want to use this drive for backing up, you select use as Time Machine drive. You can also drag items over an not use for backing up (Time Machine).
