Tax?
What kind of things people use coconut oil for? I was just curious because I read somewhere people use it on dry hair. My hair is extremely thick, wavy, and dry and was wondering if people ever use it on hair.
Yes, I do. I leave mine in for a little bit, but I have a friend who sleeps overnight with hers in. Basically I think of coconut oil like the dad thinks of Windex in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” lol
I have coarse and dry hair. I use it on my scalp to help control my dandruff (which it does a great job at). I also use it to moisturize my hair while it’s in a protective style.
I use it in my hair, on my skin, for every kind of cooking. If you make brownies, coconut oil makes THE BEST BROWNIES I have ever had, no matter whether it’s deodorized or not!!!! I use it on my grill too and to season my cast iron.
I actually have it in my hair right now This exact kind even.
I use it on my hair, it’s thick, dry, and coarse… it works wonders. I no longer have dandriff. My hair is healthy and styles much better. My beautician is who recommended me to use it. I also use it on my son when his eczema flares up. It helps with that too.
Thanks so much for the helpful feedback! Good to know!
I believe this is refined for those trying to avoid refined oils.
I was just trying to figure out if it was. Darn :/
In my country our state is called land of coconuts…we use coconut oil for almost all cooking procedures…and we make coconut oil ourselves…will cut the coconut into 2 halves…and place it n the sun for drying…for almost a week.when it’s completely dried we remove the hard shell from it and the remaining part is cut into pieces..we take this to small factories called mills equipped with machine that expels oil from our coconut and the solid residue left back is called copra which is usually given to cows .we keep the oil in hot sun for a day so that it gets cleared..afterwards we use a cloth to pour it to jars and store it…we never use bleach and all..we get pure coconut oil…we also apply coconut oil on our hairs.
That’s very cool!
How neat! Thanks so much for sharing!
My daughter uses it on her hair to get it to grow ! So question? To persons who use it for dandruf how do you all use it ! Have a especial needs young lady that has dandruff need help to control this thank you
Awesome! Thanks for sharing. I make body butters, beard balms, bath bombs, this is so good to have it handy .
Cool! You’re very welcome!
Thank you! I am making (on a budget) sugar scrub party favors for my Niece’s wedding shower and the savings on this is very helpful.
You’re so welcome! Glad you could score the deal!
This is refined oil. Cold pressing will be better.
When you use it for popcorn does it make it sweet?
This type of coconut oil (steam refined) has no coconut taste and won’t give your popcorn or anything else a flavor.
thanks!
For anyone wondering about the refined coconut oil, this is actually great for cooking. It’s naturally refined (no chemicals) and it has a higher smoke point (400 degrees) than virgin coconut oil. Also, while the taste of virgin coconut oil is great, if you don’t want that taste in whatever you’re cooking, the refined is a great, healthy option. A lot of the healthier oils (think olive oil) isn’t great for higher heat cooking. We use this (along with virgin coconut oil) a lot in our house.
Here’s what nutiva has to say: https://store.nutiva.com/refined-coconut-oil/
Isn’t this the regular price? I bought mine earlier and don’t remember it being much more.
I paid $18.74 in my January Subscribe & Save. Not sure if this was also a reduced price – Amazon often (sometimes? usually? ever?) doesn’t show “retail prices” anymore, which is unfortunate.
For those that don’t have Prime, I think Costco carries it for the same price too.
While refined oils do contain most of the nutrients of unrefined oils, they aren’t quite as potent. Furthermore, refined coconut oil could be partially hydrogenated or fully hydrogenated. These oils contain harmful trans fats that you do not want in your body.
Nutiva specifically states that this oil is not hydrogenated and that it is steam refined. You’re correct that not all of the nutrients are included (mainly antioxidants) but I still think that this is a good choice for higher-heat cooking.
This is from Nutiva directly:
One of the best Coconut Oil Brand in the US
Nutiva’s Organic Refined Coconut Oil is an excellent all-purpose oil with a neutral flavor and scent. Our organic, chemical-free refining process uses steam to create a creamy oil with the benefits of medium chain triglycerides, as well as lauric and caprylic acids. With a higher smoke point than virgin coconut oil, refined coconut oil is extremely versatile for cooking and baking. The neutral scent of this oil makes it great for body and hair care recipes—simply add any essential oil to create a great smelling moisturizer or hair mask.
