Hello, Gymboree. It’s Me! Call Me Back When You REALLY Have a Final Sale

As I mentioned yesterday, Gymboree is closing approximately 350 stores mainly across the Gymboree and Crazy 8 brand as part of their Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. To see if you live near a store that will indeed be closing, head here and select your state from the drop-down menu.

If you do indeed live near a closing store, Gymboree is hoping you’ll race over there to shop the Store Closing Sale with promises of savings of as much as 50% off the lowest ticket price.

But WAIT, you eager beaver you! ✋🏻

Before you lace up your running shoes and sprint to the store, check out what I spotted at my local Gymboree here in Boise, Idaho (and yes, my store is listed as one of the stores that will be closing soon). OR more importantly, check out what I did NOT spot. Yoo-Hoo, DEALS – where are you? 🤷‍♀️

Here are a few deals non-deals I spotted (and yes, my store was only offering up 30% off everything):

Girl’s Iridescent Sandals $21.99 (regularly $32.95)
$15.39 after additional 30% off

Assorted Toddler Pink Sandals $9.99 (regularly $21.95)
$7.99 after additional 30% off

Aqua 1-Piece Girl’s Swimsuit $15.99 (regularly $26.95)
$11.19 after additional 30% off

Infant/Toddler Dino Rashguard $20.99 (regularly $22.95)
$14.69 after additional 30% off

Toddler Girl’s Fish Bubble Shorts $8.99 (regularly $16.95)
$6.29 after additional 30% off

Assorted Socks $4.99 (regularly $6.95)
$3.49 after additional 30% off

    lol love the title!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Thanks! 😉

    • AP

      Me too! Lol

    • Wren

      Yeah that was good 😆

  2. Christy

I went out to both Crazy 8 and Gymboree yesterday. I was shocked. Halloween pjs…. $18.99 and 40% off? Really? Left both stores with nothing! I actually found a shirt I bought my son at Crazy 8 in June that was on clearance for more now than I paid then!

  3. Ashley

Thanks for sharing this. I needed one thing taken off my list this weekend so I was hoping someone would check out the sales and post.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re welcome Ashley!

  4. Aleshia

I walked out if my crazy 8. They upped their prices on everything and called it a sale. I have shopped there many times over the last several years walking out with clothes as low as 1$. This is nothing to rush in for.

  5. Jennifer

Oh puleeze! Those are not store closing prices!
My son is a teenager now so our Gymboree days are behind us 😒

  6. Andrea

Haha! Yes, I was so disappointed when I saw this. Their normal sales were much better than this! I just went last week when they had an extra 60% off clearance and 40% off new arrivals. Now it’s only 30%. They are really trying to fool people, but sadly it will probably work. I remember years ago when a Kmart store was closing they had 10-20% off and the shelves were empty in just a few days!

    • Joy

LOL. My local Kmart is closing and the prices are ridiculously high for a store that is closing, store. Prices are 10-40% off, but sill tons of inventory because prices are overinflated to begin with. What was weird though is Kmart brought in some name brands they don’t normally sell like Adidas, Levis and Aeropostale and said it’s part of a flash sale with no additional discounts just sale prices, but those prices weren’t even what you would expect for sale prices. Almost like a random factory outlet store. It was the same way when our Macy’s closed.

  7. Kristen Francom

I went to Gymboree as well. Their swimsuits were 50% off but were still almost $10 which is what you can buy them for at the beginning of the season with the new styles. Everything was marked off of their highest prices it seemed, so I agree this is not really a sale yet.

  8. Tiffany

Kmart is our city is closing and it’s the same thing. It seems like they marked items up so once the 30% off comes into play it’s back to regular full price.

    • AP

Same here. I went to a closing Kmart twice and then stopped wasting my time. I read that the Kmart store closing was run by some liquidaton company, so that company is responsible for the pricing. I don’t know about how all that stuff works…

  9. Taylor S.

Haha oh good, glad to know I’m not the only one that feels this way😒

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Yes! You are not alone! 😉

  10. Ashlynn

I agree! We went to an outlet mall last weekend between Gymboree, carter, and osgosh I was very disappointed. 70% off and you would still be paying $13 for toddler girl shorts. Just not worth it.

  11. Deb

Many decades ago, my grandmother worked for a department store that had “sales” where they’d mark an item up first, so the sale price ended up being the regular price. This is supposedly illegal now, but I swear that it still goes on.

  12. sherrycc

I went to my store also last night. Not impressed by the lack of real deals also. But I found a 2-piece st patrick day themed pj set for $10.99 before the 30% extra discount. Also bought a super cute t shirt that looks like the last piece in store for $4.97 after 30% (sad trombone here). And that’s about it.
I talked to the sales assistants in my store, and according to them they are having another 2 shipments coming and there is no exact date for store closing. I’ll wait for your next post about Gymboree’s REAL closing sale B-)

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Thanks for sharing your finds!

  13. Jess

I went to the Gymboree store at my mall yesterday. It was not a closing store but even the clearance rack was so overpriced. $35 for a dress plus 20% off. No thanks Gymboree. Very disappointed.

    • tam

I agree I went to my store yesterday it’s not closing, but the clearance rack was so jam packed you couldn’t even pull anything out to look at it, and it was so overpriced I walked out with nothing.

    • janet

That’s very dad I went last week and I want not impressed at all. m They marked the prices up like crazy jackets for $46 and couple weeks ago it was $14.99 when they had the $14.99 and under sale. Our store had 50% off but even with that it wasn’t worth it.

  14. Amanda

lol I’ve noticed this trend with closing stores! My local Macy’s was closing and I had been waiting and waiting to go to the sale and I didn’t get to go until the very last day and the prices were still OUTRAGEOUS 😒 so when I saw Gymboree was closing and they to run to my closing store I thought “suuuure” lol

  15. Brittney

I stopped by our local store in MN a few days ago. The clearance was an additional 50% off so I got my girls a few swim suits at $6.49 each. The manager said they will still have a back to school selection coming and a few other lines before they close.

  16. Melissa

In my experience, store closings are always the same. They start off announcing a great sale “up to” a certain enticing percentage. But when you go in to check out the sale, the deals are no better than before the “going out of business sale”. It is not until near the end that the deals are good. But by then the merchandise is so well picked over that you might not find what you are looking for.

  17. Sarah

I went to our JC Penney store that’s closing yesterday and walked out without buying a thing!

  18. m

Gymboree has always played pricing games..Their regular retail prices are very inflated and the quality is not what it used to be. They always mark prices up when it’s time to redeem Gymbucks to make people think they are getting good deals. t’s no surprise that stores are closing.

  19. Jenn

Terrible! We went yesterday to gymboree and crazy 8 and we’re highly dissatisfied! The day before they announced the store closing sales, all the clearance was an additional 60% off, yesterday it was a measly 30 :/ smh

  20. Lauren

I am sad that my local Gymboree is closing. While it is true that the prices can be expensive sometimes, if you wait for their sales (not just clearance merchandise) I have found sandals, dresses, and swimsuits for $8. They have better quality, prices, and selection than Target sales and I love that their pieces can be mixed and matched.

  21. babs919

FYI…if you have any gift cards use them now. After the reorganization there could be a possibility that the gift cards will not be honored. this has happened to me in the past with gift cards even though the stores were still operating. If another company steps in and buys them out then the cards are not typically honored.

    • Andrea

There is no “reorganization”. They are not being bought out by another company, they are just closing some locations.

      • barbara

        not yet….

  22. Candace

This is not surprising whatsoever. American tv did this when they closed. My husband worked there and he said that honestly if people had shopped some of the decent sales they would have had better deals than the final closing sales. It’s more psychological that people thought they were getting deals and even buying damaged floor items. I was hoping Gymboree would be better because mine is closing and I’d like to stock up for my little ones!

  23. Jen

Yep. Good call on this post. I went and was disappointed and left empty handed. Oh, well.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Thanks for the feedback Jen!

  24. snokoc

I guess we know why they aren’t doing to well?

    • snokoc

      woops *too

  25. Cc

At least i’m not the only one! My crazy8 was closed, for the first few weeks you couldnt even tell they were going out of business, then they only got up to half off and I swear they marked their clearance up I never saw the Jeans or anything under $8. They moved their inventory to another store I was told

  26. Gina

Sears stores did the same thing–raised all of their prices and called it a sale 🙄

  27. Amanda

Off this topic, but looking for a Janie & Jack 20% off coupon if anyone has one!

  28. Gigi

I went yesterday to our store that was closing and left without purchasing a thing. 30 percent off of summer clothes in mid July is NOT a deal for me. Other stores have better deals than Gymboree right now.

I drove over 2 hours last night to my closest Gymboree (I didn’t realize at the time it was that far away) It was a complete waste of time. I walked out with nothing. I usually only shop online and will continue to do so. I was so irritated.

  31. SK

I almost fell off the chair laughing while waiting at the BMV. The title is hilarious, no idea how you read my mind 😉

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Lol! 😉

  32. Heidi

Thats typical, once they file it’s usually the liquidators that come in and decide all of the structuring of sell off. I’ll just continue shopping online.

  33. Kathy

Don’t have these two stores close but do have a JCPenny going out of business. Only a short time left. My store has lots of stuff and some stuff is relatively new arrivals. The store is however a disorganized mess. Things are hung up but no organization for sizes or types of items except women’s is sperate from men’s etc. You have to be patient and be willing to dig. If clearance tag you get extra 50% off. If not clearance tag then 75% off. I got 10 items for 68 dollars yesterday. I plan to go back again because it is hard to sort through it all. Found a dress that is $80 got it for $7. Love those types of finds.

  34. Sara

Gymboree.com has free shipping and some pretty good deals if you have a 20% off code.

  35. katie

Gymboree is not the only one that does this with making you think there is a going out of business deal; Kmarts everywhere are closing and I have been to a few that have closed a decade or so before and there is always a markup that seems to happen when going out of business. They do get quite a few people fooled because honestly when you say Going Out of Business you mind just takes over that they are trying to get rid of things fast, and in reality they don’t have to get rid of it fast and at a certain price point they will get a better tax credit if they donate goods to an organization. So really, don’t be fooled by anyone going out of business.

  36. Laura

I just went to one of the ones that is closing in my area. I live in Chicago so there are quite here that are closing and staying open. I was highly disappointed. Their regular sale that they run is so much better. I left buying nothing. But I felt so bad for the workers. They said they were blindsided by this.

  37. Alea

I feel like going out of business sales are never that good until the final days. Whether it’s Gymboree, Family Christian, Kmart, etc. It’s always the same disappointment of prices going back to normal for the closing percentages off. For example, our Kmart had comforter sets on sale for $24.99 regardless of size – partly through that sale, liquidation started. They went back to their normal prices. Twin sets were $40, queen were $50. Liquidation companies are looking to make as much as possible during closures more than they are clearing stock. Always wait until the end days to get the best deals of any store closing.

  38. Ash

If anyone is interested in trading a gift card or maybe a small paypal I have a $25 gymbucks. harnish1102@yahoo(dot)com

  39. Janet

Does anyone have a Janie and Jack coupon that they wouldn’t mind sharing? janet valle 78 at yahoo dot com

  40. Bl

In my opinion, they generally don’t have the best “sales” during the gymbucks redemption days which started today. I had swimsuits in my cart online and forgot to purchase them this past weekend. Checked my cart today and the prices are much higher. If I use my gymbucks the prices come back out to the “sale” prices of $4.80 for swimsuits from this past weekend. I would check back after July 30th as they will probably have better “sale” prices then. I personally love Gymboree, but often times don’t use gymbucks because the deals aren’t as great during redemption dates. If you watch their 50% off clearance and the everything under $15 sales along with 20% coupons, you can often find $4 pajamas, $5 boys shirts $12 boys jeans and $6 little girls dresses, $5 swimsuits/swim shirts. Just my thoughts since I primarily buy and love Gymboree clothes. Luckily our store is NOT closing.

    • Bl

For those looking for a deal from a store not closing or shopping online.

  41. Laura

I went yesterday and couldn’t believe how high the prices were. I did better with buying summer clothes from them online in May. 🤦‍♀️

  42. Lorrie

I just bought bathing suits for $6, plus 20% off of that as part of a regular sale… these store closing sales are ridiculous! Only the people that don’t know the sales/pricing buy!

  43. Kara

Soooo disappointing. I’m pregnant with twins and was hoping to go score some cheap stuff. Oh well, guess I’ll just have to wait a bit.

  44. Laura

My understanding on this is that the retailer “sells” the inventory to a company that specializes in closing out a store’s inventory and that is why the prices are higher than the usual retailer sale prices and you can’t use gift cards or do returns. This is because the inventory is no longer owned and managed by the retailer but by the “close-out” management. That helped me realize to never go to a close-out sale as it is generally never worth it. Not even at the end as I think they donate to get the tax writeoff rather than sell items super cheap. HTH!

  45. mama

All the stores that go “out of business” hire a liquidation company to do their “out of business” sale which isn’t really a sale until it gets to the last week or few days before the store actually closes. By making the clothes higher priced and then putting them “on sale” when it’s not truly a better deal than normal, they make more money. Borders, Sports Authority, and others have done this with their “going out of business” so-called sale. It’s almost standard practice nowadays and it turns me off going to these fake out of business sales.

  46. Tarin

They would have to practically give it away for me to buy their sub par clothing! They have to change the quality if they want to escape their closing doom.

  47. Anna

My once upon a child had a $1 clearance event. I went there with my 6 year old and got a ton of gymboree clothes some still with tags on $1 each. I was sooooo excited. Seriously, not a bad place to check out.

  48. Cheryl

I haven’t shopped their “sale” yet, but I did pop in to Children’s Place last week when they were having a ‘big sale’ with 50% off the lowest price. They had marked the items down like $1.00, one item was $24.99 and their lowest price was $23.98 so you were still paying $12 bucks for the item…not a deal to me!

  49. Shannon

I was just thinking this the other day when it was posted on here that some are going out of business. I went online to see if there were any deals, and the pajamas that I got a few weeks ago for around $6 were at $9-11 and supposedly on sale. Perhaps Gymboree’s wouldn’t be going out of business if there prices weren’t so high. Cute clothes and decent quality, but the the prices are a turn off for me.
