Does anyone have suggestions about “cutting the cord”? I’m looking for a good deal on wi-fi and TV. I’m considering Sling with an antenna (for local channels). Not sure who has the best inexpensive wi-if. Would love to hear other people’s recommendations from this helpful group!
Thanks in advance!
I ditched my cable a month ago. I have an Amazon firestick and downloaded the Directtv Now app (which has nothing to do with directtv). It’s $35 per month, no contract, no equipment. I’m able to watch my favorite local tv channels plus the cable news channels. I also jailbroke my firestick to watch movies. You’re also able to still watch Netflix, Hulu, YouTube etc. I went from paying $130 per month to $35!! If directtv now doesn’t work for you then try sling tv, which is also good but the channels that I wanted, I would have had to go to their 2nd package.

Thanks for the great tips and for sharing the helpful link! Much appreciated!
I did the same only I was lucky enough to get the deal with DTV NOW when they were first offering it and got the next to highest package for the lowest package price of $35 a month for life with the free Amazon Fire Stick. I love that it is a straight $35 a month, no hidden fees too. And lots of channels to surf. Plus I can stream to my TV or my tablet so I can wander all over the house as I watch and not miss a thing. My HDTV antenna offers all of my locals and I so very much don’t miss the signal lost screen every time a cloud goes over! No more missing the end of a movie because it decided to rain today.
I too got a free firestick for signing up!
If you’re an Amazon prime member, Firestick (or even better fire TV box) you get tons of shows/movies. Sling is good, PS Vue is really coming up (stream anywhere) You can use an antenna for local HD broadcast and you can sideload Mobdro for tons of free live channels and if you’re inclined sideload terrarium tv for movies if you’re not a prime member. There’s tons of ways to cut cable. My favorite way is to turn the TV off and take the family outside or build Legos and play games with them. Lol
Thanks for the helpful suggestions! I appreciate it!

Great resource! Thank you! 🙂
We switched to Charter and it is costing us half of what At&T did. We have a large antenna on the roof with a rotor. These small indoor 50 mile range antennas just don’t do the job. We have never had cable. It will cost some money to get set up but consider how far away the stations are that you regularly watch and read reviews on antennas before purchasing.
Thanks, Lana! This is helpful!
We cut from Charter and went with Hulu (free with BING rewards) and Netflix. For local news/weather – we can airplay that from their app to the TV for free – it was hard at first. But after 1 1/2 years. We don’t miss it. We id subscribe to MLB for my son for one year, but found he really didn’t watch it so that’s our too.
Thank you for sharing your experience, Laura! Very helpful!
We “cut the cord” four years ago and have never looked back. We have tried starz, Hulu, Netflix, prime, and showtime. Currently we have Netflix and prime. Both of those are good for seasons and movies that aren’t current. Hulu is great if you want to keep up with shows as they air.
Great! Thanks so much for sharing your experience and for the helpful tips!
Exactly this. We primarily watch netflix and prime, occasionally hulu. If I want to see any local news I just look online, can’t see the appeal of sitting through newscasts anymore.
Sandy, there is a great article at https://www.antennasdirect.com/cord-cutting-guide.html
I thought this explains it all. I got an antenna, dvr for the antenna from channel masters, and we have regular internet. I went to the spectrum store for a better deal then on the phone.
We use Netflix and slingtv.
That is a wonderful article! Thanks for sharing it and your experience!
Get a fire stick and jailbreak it!
Agreed. We have 4 fire tv with kodi and the kids love being able to watch whatever whenever.
I’ve jailbroken both of mine as well as a few for my coworkers.
How do you jailbreak them?
Google trypoint.com for instructions to install Kodi in about 5 minutes.
where I live I am only slated to have the choice of two wifi companies. I am getting rid of cable next weekend. My bill will still be around $90 with the wifi and an extended service like sling but I will be able to choose what I want to do. Right now ai pay a little over $90 for a few local chanels and wifi. I will be getting so many more chanels after I switch.
I wish I can do that! I am paying almost $200 for Wifi+TV+Home Security thru Xfinity. My husband needs a fast internet to work when he’s home and my son loves to play his online game so we’re subscribed with 150 Mbps and we need the home security as my husband travels most of the time and I am alone with the kids at home.
I’m not sure how long you have been with them, but try calling and asking for a loyal customer discount. I did that a year ago, they dropped it back from $90 to $70 without missing a beat, and offered me HBO channels. I could care less about the HBO, but he said it would actually make it cheaper. Go figure. More is less, right? My husband also travels for work, and we bought and installed a home security system that streams straight to our phones. So I can look on my phone and see who rang my bell, or is in any of the camera range. If needed, I can call the police or neighbor right away for assistance. That being said, we are in a fairly safe area, and just have issues with bored teens sometimes. I encourage you to shop some options. Put the savings into a fun vacation, that way all your leg work seems “worth it”. 🙂 Good Luck!
We pay similar to what one probably pays for cable, BUT we have the fastest internet out which is about $67 monthly (due to the large amount of devices we use), and we have prime, Hulu, and Netflix. Between the 3 there’s not much we miss out on, and it’s wayyyy better than cable since when I had cable I could never find anything on tv when I finally had time to sit down, I was always dependent upon what happen to be playing.
I would never go back. I have heard tho ditching all of what I use and just doing sling is better. Oh and of course you cannot live without a jailbroke firestick lol. That’s a must.
Thank you for the helpful tips!
Kodi and jail broken fire stick all new to me. Thanks to this site I learn something new everyday!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR EXPERIENCES AND RECOMMENDATIONS!! So very helpful! I really appreciate it! 🙂
How do you know if the antenna is going to work? I live on a lake, but am surrounded by several old oak trees– probably about 6′ in diameter and 120′ tall! I can never find anything on the internet that will help me understand how these things work! I don’t want to waste money, but I am soooooo tired of paying outrageous bills to watch television on occassion– I maybe watch it once a week! Can someone help me understand? (I don’t know what a sling is, or a firestick, or any of the things being discussed here… sorry!)
