Love the Fall? Time to Get Cozy with Homemade Fall-Inspired Simmering Room Scents
Want to make your home smell like Fall naturally? 🍂🍎
If you’re a fan of delicious smells like cinnamon, apple, and pumpkin spice, here’s an easy way to fill your home with those scents on the stove or in a slow cooker. Simmering scents are a natural way to get your home smelling fresh.
All you have to do is combine ingredients in a small saucepan or slow cooker and simmer! I usually use the stove top method, bring contents to a slight boil, then reduce heat and let simmer. I like that this idea can definitely be improvised to include additional ingredients you may have on hand such as fresh ginger, orange peels etc.
Cinnamon Apple Simmering Scent
- one apple, sliced
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 1 teaspoon whole cloves
- 3 pieces whole star anise
- 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- apple juice or water
Pumpkin Spice Simmering Scent
- 2 tablespoons Pumpkin Pie Spice
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 1 teaspoon whole cloves
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- water
Notes:
- I found whole spices in the grocery store section with the Hispanic spices to be less expensive then the options in the packaged jars on the spice isle.
- You can easily make your own pumpkin pie spice by combining 1/4 cup ground cinnamon, 4 teaspoons ground ginger, 4 teaspoons ground nutmeg, and 1 tablespoon ground allspice.
- I found the stove top method to be a little stronger scent than using the slow cooker – it’s my preferred method. Just make sure to check the water or liquid level and add more if it gets low.

Where in the store do you find whole cloves & anise?
In my store they are in cellophane packets with the Hispanic foods like dried chiles ect
My hubby does this all of the time after cooking fried foods (fish & chicken). I swear it smells better and lingers longer than any candle.
How much water did you add?
Just depends on the pot but maybe 1/2 way full. You do have to keep an eye on it every 30 min or so to see if you need more water – hope that helps 👍
Thank you soo much can’t wait to try this
Great idea I will have to try this. Best of all it’s natural and not those chemical smelling ones from the store which of course I would never use cause they are so toxic.
My Dollar Tree had cinnamon sticks today.
That’s awesome!
Winco had 12oz of cinnamon sticks ( a BIG OL BAG) for 5 bucks. I new I bought it for a reason LOL!
