I’ve bought many of the clearance plants at Lowes over the years even one’s the staff have chuckled at me for. With a little tlc, I’ve always had success with them.

Happy to hear you have had good luck with your clearance plants Monica! Thanks for sharing!

I call these rescues.. I have pretty much only bought these over the years. I feel good about rescuing them. I just bought beautiful huge mums 😊

All of the crepe myrtles in my backyard were $4 many years ago; now they are very big and beautiful!

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

How neat! Glad to hear they have done so well!

When I was a child my family would buy plants from the neighborhood plant shop. It was a small shop packed from floor to ceiling with nothing but beautiful plants. Anyone else remember plant shops? These days I have to buy all my plants from Lowes and Home Depot. My only complaint about these big box stores are they rarely water their plants. No wonder they are always being put on clearance, stores don’t want to care for them. I’m going tonight to stock up! Thank you.

I am fortunate enough to have an English Gardens that is 15 minutes away. However, it is the same thing…they don’t water the plants as often.
I always wait until mid summer when their basil plants go on clearance for $0.50 ea. Within 2 weeks, I am able to rescue to them. By the end of summer (also up until end of September), they grow so much that I am able to make several batches of homemade pesto sauce (without the cheese) that I freeze and use throughout the winter.

Please give me tips on how to rescue dying plants! I don’t have a green thumb at all. I have hard water so I try to collect rain water whenever I can.

    • Yessi

Am with you Mary. I can’t seem to keep anything alive. I’m trying so hard to keep my mums alive but they’re dying and I’ve only had them for two weeks. I planted little pine trees I bought at Lowe’s and 2 out of four completely dried out and shriveled. I don’t think I dug the roots deep enough.

If its hot where u live mums will die. Im in houston and they have been out for 3 weeks at least. Its way too hot. Same with violets and snapdragons. Until we can stay out of the high 80s and low 90s they wont bloom/or sometimes survive.

This was me, before miracle grow, sit some of the miracle grow stuff in water overnight so it soaks up and then in the morning water the plants! I am telling you it works!! :))

  8. misti

I LOVE Lowes. I have landscaped my whole new lot with most from Lowes. Every store clearances at different times, also sometimes only a couple of 1 type and later the rest. Also most are root bound and need to be replanted. I have only lost a couple out of hundreds of plants bought. Lowes does not throw away plants like other big box stores:) Love Lowes and their clearances plants!

    • Bryant

Sometimes I laugh at Lowe’s plant clearance selection though, because the plants will be dead and bone dry and they still are selling it. They won’t just throw them out! Now I could see if they wanted .50 cents but they’ll have sticker prices of half off the original price which is absurd.

In Houston, we have HGC houston garden center. They are all over the area. In summer when its hot and no rain in site, they mark everything to 50%. Then in fall they go to 75%. They are decent about watering. U can get some real bargains.

Rural king had a super discount last year. I got enough plants to completely landscape my entire yard around my house for $250. Such a score. I have a 4 acre lot. But we only did around the house. I bet we bought 50 plants all in 1-3 gallon containers.

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Glad to hear you could landscape such a large area for so cheap! Thanks for sharing Amy!

I always hit the clearance plant rack at Lowe’s! I’ve scored some great plants from .50 to $5. My husband knows that anytime we go to Lowe’s that’s where I will be. Usually they just need water or a bigger pot for room to grow. It is a GREAT place to get plants cheap. I’ve started a little succulent farm with plants from the clearance rack. I also scored a beautiful braided trunk Hibiscus 🌺, some ruffled ones, and many more…

I love Lowe’s Garden Clearance! In July, I got 3 large warehouse rolling racks full of 420 flowers for $20. The receipt total was over $2000 before the discount. It included 30 knockout rose bushes priced at $29.99 each originally. I think around 15 plants couldn’t be saved, the rest all thrived. So, thankful to the garden worker who gave me a heads up. I would have passed by the racks thinking the workers were using them since they were all saran wrapped.

    • Susan

Awesome score. Great job saving money.

        Thanks! 🙂

I have some beautiful gardens that I wouldn’t normally have, had it not been for some fantastic deals at Lowes. Several years ago, they had a flat cart full of what they called discard plants they where to go into the dumper. I asked if I could have them and nurse them back to life, they told me no you can’t have them, but you can buy them I asked how much they said$2.00 for the flat cart. I took them all home cut them back and soaked them in fertilizer and planted them. Kept them watered everyday for a week and now I am making others happy by sharing my patients.. they are thriving.. Thank you Lowes, I am coming back for more you know. You make me happy and I can make other happy too it’s a win win.. the only sad thing is the Lowes near my house have closed I have to travel now to get to your stores.
