Does anybody know if this is a good computer for a 12 years old to do middle school homework? Writing papers etc.
I would assume so. Our local high school lends each child a Chromebook to use for school work. They are each assigned their own for the entire school year. Hope this helps!
Thanks for your help! I know nothing about computers!
Yes, our school district loans our kids 4th thru 12th grade touch screen Chromebooks. My kids love them.
Thanks! I’m am at a total loss when it comes to computer knowledge!
I bought a Chromebook on Black Friday for our house, mainly for my middle schooler. It is the touch screen Acer brand one Best Buy has for a similar price as this on BF. So far she has gotten a lot of use of it. My child uses google docs and slides for most of their school work. We have also installed a few fun game apps (Crossy Road etc). From my experience in the last 2 weeks I would say that a Chromebook is perfect for my middle schooler.
I wouldn’t recommend a Chromebook for homework. It doesn’t run Microsoft word. I mainly use mines to surf the web, watch Netflix videos and play games.
They actually do run all office products! 🙂
They only run the web version which isn’t really that great in comparison to the desktop version of the office suite.
Can you use Microsoft Office and Powerpoint on this?
No, I think it uses Google docs.
Yes.
Microsoft offers a completely free web-based version of Office called Office Online, complete with Word Online, Excel Online, and PowerPoint Online. Microsoft even makes these apps available in the Chrome Web Store. These web apps aren’t just for Chromebook users, though. … The Word Online web app in Chrome OS.
Yes you can download and use all of the office products! I just bought an Acer chromebook and set mine up literally 2 days ago.
To use Microsoft u would have to use it online itdoesnt come on chrome books
I use Microsoft programs on my Chromebook via remote access (easy to do) from my work and home PC. There are tons of apps, software, games and everything else. My Chromebook has a dual operating system, Chrome OS and Android. I have all my Android apps and chrome software all in one system and I installed a 256gb SSD. Chromebooks also don’t get viruses and are really fast booting up and the battery life is longer than any of my Win10 laptops.
Fridays no offense but I thought you were mistaken about the Android ability on Chromebooks. Lol! This is a good price but I think I want one that uses Android too. Which one did you get? Do you like it?
Here is a link to a list of Chromebooks that can run Android and come with Google play installed:

Chrome OS is an operating system, such as Windows or Mac. It is completely web based so you cannot download software to it. You have to do everything online and without internet it’s pretty much a paperweight. It is however perfect for kids to do work on, as the OS is simple, clean, no frills. Computer lab teacher here and we use Chromebooks with K-3 in my building with no problems.
Thanks for clarifying, I was considering getting this, but since I use Word and Excel for school and work, this would be really inconvenient to have to be connected to the internet all the time since the apps are web-based.
Actually you can! There is storage space and you can download things like MS office and use it offline.
Can you use SD cards to store things for more memory? I think you can (hope this is not a stupid question but I can’t tell by the picture)
Yes you can use USB or SD cards to store info, upload and download programs, music, movies, games, data.
I am looking for a laptop for my 8th grader, and I asked a computer guru friend of mine about one she wanted that is 32 GB and he said it isnt too bad, but most of the memory would be taken up in operating system. Just some thoughts…
Would this be good for gaming? I know a lot of pc games take up a lot of memory and use high graphics, but I am not pc savy.
No, absolutely not good for gaming.
Target has a HP Chromebook on sale for 179.00 and you can use the issued 20% from BF and if redcard holder get an additional 5% off making it a good deal as well. So if you miss out on this deal I advise you to check out Target. Best Buy has a deal on a Chromebook as well but the savings don’t match the Target savings. Just wanted to share!!
Where do you find the 20% coupon from BF to use as well?
Check in stores. I got this same chromebook for both of my girls for 100$ each on Friday. On a different note- does anyone know how to download movies to a flashdrive?
Wow $100 dollars where did you purchase it
I bought this on Black Friday and had to return it because I’m apparently too old fashioned haha. Had no clue how to use it. There’s no Word or PowerPoint just Google Docs and other Google Programs. Also there’s something extra that has to be done to print. Didn’t think I would reach the technology plateau at 25 but I have haha! So if you’re used to Microsoft I would not recommend buying this
I agree, these Chromebooks are geared to school age kids. Most schools use them. My son (7th grade) has had one for a few years. I got him a new touch one that was posted here from Best Buy. We’ve had no issues with his current chromebook, just the “clicker” not working as well and he really wanted a touch one. The teachers here post homework, study guides etc to their google classroom. It really helps to get on the chromebook and keep up with studying for tests etc. I highly recommend! My daughter is a freshmen in college and we got her a Mac book her senior year of high school. Chromebooks would not be sufficient for college age students.
I feel the same 🙂
Just an FYI–you can create docs/slides etc in the Google suite, and you can save/download them as MS Word or PDF files super easy.
Can you print coupon on a chromebook??
My grandson uses a Chromebook at school, he’s in 3rd grade. All homework is in Google Docs or Google Drive.
At Back-to-School night the kids impressed all the adults with how well they can manuever everywhere and do everything on them. His teacher is so impressed with them his new laptop is a Chromebook.
My nephew in high school, a junior, uses one as well, so I can confidently say this would be great for elementary through high school students to use.
And touchscreen, the kids love it!
Would this work for basic gaming for an 8 year old- like roblox and Minecraft?
Probably Not gaming works better on desktops or Laptops that have at Least 8GB memory
Random; Does anyone know of a cash Back site that allows you to book hotels with rewards programs??? For example, I’m trying to book a hotel using the marriot rewards program but when I went thru ebates and swagbucks they both say if you use any rewards or discounts it’s not valid!!! Just trying to earn a few dollars off my stay if any ones knows any websites?? 🙂
When i go to check out it shows as $179…anyone else get this?
Looks like the price has gone up a bit. Thanks for letting us know!
On jet.com, the price is $169 with free returns for the same computer.
It’s $159 now 🙂🙂
