We just had lice in our house this weekend. We had a company come out to the house and (literally) nit pick everyone’s heads. I learned so much about lice and treatments. They told us the best way to remove lice is to remove them with a lice comb. Take a solid hour and remove them. Chemicals don’t really kill them anymore and are harsh on your hair/scalp.

Yep! Don’t buy these awful chemicals. Get a fairy tales set at ulta or target with the nit terminator comb. Then you tube videos on the appropriate way to comb through love. That’s how we got rid of them previously. Nix did NOTHING!

I’m getting this for future use. Between all of our neighbors, there is usually a lice contraction at school at least one a year.

Tea tree shampoo will kill and repel future lice without the nasty chemicals!! Please look into alternatives before going the chemical route. You will need to spend time going through with a lice comb afterwards

I got this just about a week ago. Found a louse on my daughter’s head and it was TOO expensive to have a company come to my house for 6 people. I nit picked my 3 daughters and used this on me. It made my hair super, super greasy. Took about 5 washes to get out. I have been nit picking myself as well as I can and so far haven’t seen any signs. The package says it kills super lice AND eggs. I think it works well.

Did you actually call the company? Louse Calls (in our area) doesn’t charge unless the find lice (after the fee for the first person). They also give you the products and nit combs and will come back for a recheck.

A few months ago, our 8 year old had lice. We used this and the lice comb everyday for 10 days and also blew dry her hair (like they do in the salons) Come to find out, the heat of hair dryers and curling irons kills them. I suggest you wash with tea tree them blow dry the lice shampoos are very rough on your scalp!

The only one in my house who didn’t get lice was my youngest (who was very cuddly with me). I swear it’s because I use Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle.

Fairytales Rosemary Repel products are great for keeping them away. The Nit Free Terminator lice comb works the best if you already have the little buggers. It’s also great at removing sand or dandruff from hair.

My kids got this before bad. We tried everything. I used the Cetaphil treatment but it takes hours to blow dry the hair because it is so thick. what ended up working was olive olive let it set on head for apx 8 hrs try and comb as many nits out as possible. Put cotton around the ears and forehead to keep oil from running down face then put a shower cap on. Wash after 8 hrs with shampoo a couple times. Do the comb not comb again. Or in my daughters hair they were so small they would go right through the comb so I cut the little strand out you couldn’t even tell. It was almost easier than combing. Repeat this process every couple of days. Works great!

The trick with the Cetaphil treatment is to soak the hair in it, then put a shower cap on, and go to sleep/leave it on for 8 hours. It smothers the lice. I tried several different chemical treatments a couple of years ago when one of my kids had it horribly bad, but nothing worked. That’s when I googled like crazy, and I recommend the Cetaphil overnight treatment to anyone who needs it! You still have to comb the nits out, which idk how much hair your kids have, but it literally took over 9 hours one day to get thru all of the curls on my kids head. Then you have to spend days going back thru because you will undoubtedly miss one or two, and you don’t want any to hatch.. I don’t know if the Cetaphil smothered the eggs too, but I wasn’t taking a chance lbvvvs! I’m so happy we haven’t had to deal with this again (knock on wood!!)

Neither Nix or Rid worked for us. We actually put barbasol on our scalps, rubbed it in well, left it on while wearing a shower cap, then combed the nits out. worked great!!

I think the Olive Oil worked better than the Cetaphil and definitely less time consuming. My doctors office told me about it. They said just google it and follow the directions on how many days to apply the product.

My child had lice years ago and I used mayonnaise. I put it on thick and combed it through the hair and then wrapped the hair in a plastic bag and then another plastic bag and kept on on for an hour. Combed through it again, washed the hair with dawn, blew it dry and combed again. I repeated twice. That took care of that but I bagged up all the stuffed animals and put them away. As for blankets I washed them in hot water, dried them and threw out all the pillows. As for the cushions on the couch I found a great product on Amazon that is organic and works!! Good luck to all who have to go through this!!!

I second the mayo treatment and lice comb. My daughter got lice right when I found out I was pregnant so I was hesitant on using such chemicals plus the chemicals on her head too. Kept her home for 2 days just to make sure every nit and louse was gone. Brought her to school and the nurse checked her over and said she was good to go. Then 2 weeks later she got it again. Come to find out our school doesn’t send home letters staying lice is going around and also now you can attend school WITH lice. I was baffled about that.

    • Marie

Yes, that’s basically the policy throughout our country now smh. It’s because lice is just considered a ‘nuisance’, and not an actual hazard to our health. I complained all the way down to our schoolboard, because they don’t even inform the teacher or check the rest of the classroom. It may not be bad for our health, but it’s a costly, painstakingly time consuming problem to have to deal with multiple times because they have chosen not to inform parents of the problem. I so wish things would change.

Licefree spray is what we have used in the past. No chemicals, just spray it on and let dry. Combing is optional but I always choose to. Just wanted to share!

Yay, I’ll get another bottle of this to have around for just in case – the new Nix (“Ultra,” the stuff in this picture) is NOT chemicals and actually works great! It does take awhile to wash fully out, but we used it and then did major combing (I think combing is the only way to be certain) and everything we found was dead.

By the way, we also use Fairy Tales Lice stuff (shampoo/conditioner/spray) and apparently lice didn’t care about it, lol! I stopped buying the expensive stuff and just add tea tree oil to their hair more and we hairspray ponytails every morning.
