3. Eva NYC Freshen Up

“Eva NYC Freshen Up Dry Shampoo! I’ve tried so many others, it just really depends on your hair. Mine loves this one. I have thin, straight hair that’s dark brown/red. This was the only one that smelled amazing, didn’t dry out my hair, or leave a bad white residue, and it felt like I had just blow dried it. I found it at Ulta for $12. Tried Batiste, Wella, AG, Living Proof, and Dove before but all of them didn’t take well to my hair.” – Amber

“Eva NYC is the best!!!” – Heather

This powerhouse dry shampoo extends your style, adds lift, and deodorizes without leaving behind residue thanks to its micro powder. Pick up Drybar Detox when your hair is in need of some TLC.

“I have wavy, thick hair and live in a humid area of the country, so frizz is an issue. The only one that has worked for me is Drybar brand at the roots. I run it through with my fingers, then style. You can purchase on QVC or Ulta beauty. It lasts a good while, too!” – Amy

“Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo. Cheap drugstore brands like Batiste smell horrible and don’t last long. I had to use a lot to make my hair not feel oily the whole day. Drybar only needs a little.” – Susan

Whether you want to save some pennies, prefer a brush on format, or are simply in a pinch, try out a DIY dry shampoo. Other readers say they get by with baby powder alone!

“Honestly I make my own! 2 parts cornstarch to 1 part cocoa powder (for brunettes) and I can put it on at night before bed with a powder brush, then touch up if necessary in the morning. Works amazing for me, with the added bonus that my hair smells like chocolate, especially when I sweat and wash it out haha!” – Aimee

“If you have dark hair, a simple cocoa powder and cornstarch mixture is so cheap, works great, and lasts for eons. I wash like every 5-6 days.” – Kimberly

“Baby powder.” – Jennifer

“Definitely baby powder!” – Janet

Want great dry shampoo application advice?

“Using them correctly gives the best results with any of the brands (I’ve tried tons of different brands). Use them before your hair starts looking oily. Examples: before your workout, before bed, before your outing, before putting on a shower cap …. (lightly touch up if needed). It eliminates the need to use as much and it keeps down the amount of buildup.” – MJ

  1. 50ShadesofLipstick

I have jet black hair and the Batiste Hint of Color Divine Dark get a big NOPE!!! from me. Tinted dry shampoos will stain everything that they come into contact and even bleed onto fabrics and bedding. If you have dark hair, then I suggest that you avoid it! Batiste regular dry shampoo, Dry Bar, Living Proof, and Not Your Mother’s dry shampoo are all awesome but I hate the white residue b/c it’s super apparent on black hair.

Also, baby powder is no longer made from talc- it’s made from cornstarch.

  2. moria

I tried dry shampoo once a couple years ago and hated it. It was the Dove on the list, so I wasn’t expecting it to be on a list of best ones, but not everyone likes the same things I guess.

  3. Jana

Isn’t it concerning that most dry shampoos have butane and propane as the first ingredients? If I were to use a dry shampoo, I’d prefer something safer.

    • Rochelle

Those are propellants used in aerosols to blast the product out of the can; they’re not particular to dry shampoo.

I think I’ve tried every dry shampoo out there and it just doesn’t work for me. 🙁 It actually feels even dirtier when I use the dry shampoo. If I don’t wash my hair daily it gets really oily and gross. I keep buying different brands of dry shampoo just hoping that it will work for me but it never does.

  5. Penny

My fav Dry Shampoo is Monat! No residue and gives some volume to my limp hair.

  6. Janet

My favorite is Klorane. I get it from Sephora. Although it’s not cheap ($20 for a regular-sized can), it works like a dream, and I use it 1 – 2 times a week. Batiste has given me scalp dermatitis, but it is easy to find and cheap.

  7. cheapcheapgoesthemommy

If you are on the broke broke and need some dry shampoo check out dollar tree….even if you have brunette hair, just touch it up with some brown eyeshadow (nonglitter) and you are good to go girlfriend….on the cheap cheap 🙂

  8. Cobe vizio

We can’t take aerosols on planes…according to travel agent……..I was so glad to see the dry
    Powder , Bumble and Bumble🎊😄🎉

    • Katie

When I get off a flight I always go straight to a drugstore and buy hairspray and dry shampoo! I have to have them – and hate non-aerosol hairspray! It’s a pain – especially b/c I have to leave them behind. But, it’s worth it to have my favorites! 🙂

  9. Lucy

I would suggest using dry shampoo right before going to bed. You’ll wake up with clean looking hair. I’ve only tried Eva NYC from the list and it works great!

  10. Alli

I have very dry hair naturally and I can’t find one that doesn’t make it drier. I try not to wash too often for that very reason. I like that dry shampoo soaks up the oil from my roots, but hate the way my ends feel. Anyone have any suggestions?

    • Lucy

Alli, Eva NYC makes a “dry conditioner” that I use on my ends and it works as well as their dry shampoo. You can also try leave in products and only apply them to your ends.

    • JODI P

Apply it only to the roots.

  11. KT

I have tried several different spray types or dry shampoo but they all left my hair feeling sticky or static-like. I finally found one at costco called Blow Pro and it is just a loose powder, helped my hair feel fresh in between hair washing days. It also lasted a lot longer than the typical spray types. When I went back to buy more they were discontinuing it at my costco so I got the double pack for 9.97!!
