      Great find!

I refuse to use these products on my dog. These products don’t fight against ticks and fleas – they kill the large with poison – IN YOUR DOG!! Please do some research – essential oils can protect your dog from ticks and fleas

Which oils do you use? Do you use a carrier oil? How often do you put it on?

I currently buy a natural bug spray from da- aromatherapy – its good for people and dogs. One bottle is around $20 with shipping. Heart worm Meds can run $25 a month – so the price didn’t bother me.
We have a pug, so for her I spray 2 squirts in my hands and rub her down head to tail in the morning – no more mosquitos swarming to her. Now she doesn’t romp through weeds and woods – so for us this works.
Mygreenfills is changing their big soray formula so you can use on dogs. I currently have their old formula that contains cat nip – so that’s just for us humans
But you can probably make your own – just google natural dog bug spray

I agree with all of this! All these companies care about is making money! They don’t care if they are poisoning your pet.

We use the Bayer Seresto collars, which last for 7-8 months. They are about $50, shopping around with coupon codes I usually get them for $35. We discovered these with our last dog, who was older, had been abused and was extremely reluctant to let us put anything on her(even as easy as a squeeze on flea treatment). Instead of battling her once a month to put something on her, we’d do it once every 7 months, so much better. We live in FL so fleas are a big problem year-round, and these have always worked for us, even protecting a dog with an extreme flea allergy.

The active ingredient in Pet Armor is Fipronil, same as Frontline. It went off patent years ago. The problem is that it’s such and “old” chemical that fleas in some regions are suspected of being resistant — Fipronil does nothing to rid my foster dogs of fleas, and the shelter vet said that she stopped using it in the shelter because of suspected resistance. However, it reportedly still works great in other areas (esp. up north). Call and ask your vet’s staff if Fipronil is still working in your area before stocking up on this deal — the vets tend to know what’s effective locally, and what’s not!

Maggie – great comment! Thank you for posting an educated and knowledgable response. I am a vet & I try to tell everyone to just call if you have questions! I would rather have clients spend their money wisely & definitely use products that work. Your pets do not have to have fleas. (1 flea lays about 50 eggs per day, so it doesn’t take long for your pets & house to be infested.)

The flea resistance to topical meds, seem to happen every 5 yrs. or so. I stopped recommending fipronil products about 2 years ago. Again, PLEASE ask your veterinarian for recommendations if you have any concerns – that is why we are here – to care for your pets! There are several great choices available now – tablets, topical & a collar. (And there are ways to save money on those products – just ask!)
*And don’t forget about monthly Heartworm prevention!

I work at an open intake shelter in NC. Fleas and ticks are ridiculous already this year. Same with my personal dogs. We live in the country/woods and frontline, advantage, and advantix has done NOTHING for the past 3-4 years for us at my house for fleas or ticks. We went with Seresto collars this year at my house. LOVE THEM! Not one flea or tick since we put them on. We have also treated our yards before with diatomaceous earth for flea problems (we have a lot of wildlife especially wild bunnies that have infested our yards before) and it has worked wonders.
A lot of animals that come through our shelter have never been treated for fleas/ticks (let alone heart worms) and most of the ones that have been treated were treated with horrible products like “Adams or Hartz” products from Walmart. Don’t get me started on the flea collars from Walmart or Dollar General either 😬
Anyway, I am a firm believer in Seresto products for this year! May have to switch to something different next year but so far so good!

      • Dr. Lucas

Bayer makes a great yard spray that is effective against parasites. (Diatomaceous earth can be irritating to the lungs with some pets.) I try not to push one product – however, I have used Seresto collars, Bravecto, & Simparica on my own pets. They all did well – on my pets. (The collars can be less effective if you have dogs that chew & pull on them. My pups chewed them off of each other)

We used to buy Frontline without any issues but I gave this a try more than a year ago just for the cost savings and I’ve never looked back. We live in Pennsylvania which is the hotbed for ticks and we are very good about applying it on the 1st of every month. Our property is surrounded by woods, we have a ton of deer, and we may let our grass get a little higher than we’d like from time to time, and it works great because we’ve never seen a flea or tick on her.

My dogs are outside dogs. For flea and tick prevention I use Pet Armor Plus. So far so good! Havent seen any fleas or ticks. I also keep my grass short. And I sprinkle Sevin Dust 5 percent, on the grass around my deck, and under the deck. I also sprinkle a little on the deck. My dogs tend to spend most of their time there. I also live in the country/woods. My combo seems to work great!
