If someone is totally new to sewing, is this a good machine to get?

Hi there! Possibly. I noticed a few reviewers stating that this machine should work for beginners. It also comes with an instructional DVD and manual plus free Brother technical support should you run into any issues. Hope that helps!

I have a brother machine and I would recommend the CS6000i. I’m an intermediate sewer, but I do love that it’s computerized. It’s really easy to use. I’ve seen it as low as $115, but I just recently paid $140. The bummer about Brother machines is that they are typically not worth repairing when it breaks. I just plan on replacing mine every 2 to 3 years. So if you want a long term machine, consider another brand.

I have a brother machine. a simple basic machine. My husband bought it for me 13 years ago I still use it. I use it a lot. I piece quilts, I take it to a monthly quilt class. I max out the speed when I sew, peddle to the metal. The one I have is very basic. I bought a newer one a few months ago that had more stitches, I wanted one that did button holes. sewing machines do not break every 2-3 years I’m not sure why that other lady said that. Good luck with your projects.

I have a Brother machine and I love it. It has a few more functions than the one listed here, but I rarely use them. I got the machine 13 years ago and use it alot for simple sewing. Brother makes it so easy to learn on their machines. They are very user friendly. Plus, there are so many YouTube videos, that I am sure you can get help by watching one of those or by subscribing to a sewing blog and asking questions. I learned by taking a class at Joann’s 13 years ago, when my son was a baby. When he was 8 or 9 I taught him how to sew on it. Now he sews for the fun of it.

My machine “broke” about 3 years ago, for the first time. I took it into an Authorized Brother shop and they just needed to give it a “grease and oil” job and clean some of the parts. Cost about $30, I think. It never occurred to me to buy a new machine.

Good luck and check out some of the amazing online blogs for newbie sewists. There are lots of fun things to make.

I have had one of these basic brother machines for fifteen years and it has worked well for basic sewing like curtains, etc. My sister bought this exact machine for her ten year old who is taking lessons from a professional and the professional tested it and said it was fine for a beginner. She said the computer ones were easier to regulate the speed for a beginner but my sisters ten year old made a dress with it that is nice. I think it really just matters how much you want to spend but this one will do the job.
