Homemade Birthday Cake Batter Ice Cream

Directions

1

In a mixing bowl, whisk together sugar and milk.

2

Whisk in the vanilla, heavy whipping cream, and yellow cake mix. Combine using whisk until there are no lumps.

3

Pour into your ice cream maker to freeze.

4

Toward the end of freeze time (mine takes about 30-35 minutes), add sprinkles to ice cream.

5

Once frozen to desired consistency, it's ready to serve.

6

If you want harder, firmer ice cream to scoop, place in the freezer for about 30 minutes, then scoop out into bowls or cones.

The secret ingredient to birthday cake ice cream is cake mix!

The yellow cake mix combined with the rainbow sprinkles is the perfect mix in for this birthday cake ice cream! It really adds the crave-able cake-like flavor. The end result is an incredibly delicious, rich, and creamy cake batter ice cream your family will flip for! 🙌

Hip Tip: There have been some concerns that eating raw cake batter can make you sick. While we haven’t experienced any issues, do what feels right for you and for your family, and absolutely ask a doctor for his or her medical opinion.

Fact: I’m in LOVE with my new Whynter ice cream maker!

While any ice cream maker will work for this recipe, let me tell ya about mine. I decided to get the Whynter 2.1 Qt ice cream maker after hearing about how much Collin loves hers, and OMG, it’s fantastic! There’s no more salt, ice, or freezing a bowl first like the ones I used to have. This baby has a built-in compressor and is so fast and easy to use. You can have homemade ice cream in about 30 minutes, and I, too, now share Collin’s ice cream excitement!!

This looks luscious! I’ll probably substitute frozen blueberries for the sprinkles since they are in season now. Thanks for sharing Lina.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Yum! Thanks Bunny 👍

  3. Ice Mom

Looks SOOO good. I am jealous. My husband put me on kitchen gadget time out. LOL

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh haha I can relate to that so much! Thanks so much

  4. motherfish

Uh….no. Didn’t we learn a lesson about a year ago with the e.coli in the flour recall that also affected some boxed cake mixes? The company said it can happen again, because flour is an unpasteurized “product of the field”, and they don’t plan to make any changes as far as heat treating flour. The lesson? Don’t eat raw flour!!!!

    • hellfiregainz

motherfish, Yes!!! Common misconception. its rarely the eggs, its the raw flour that is dangerous.

    • Tina

I came here to say the same thing. You should never eat raw flour and freezing doesn’t kill E. Coli.

    • StephB

Been eating cake batter all my life…lol🤷🏻‍♀️😂

      • Daniela

Yep, still alive. I buy cookie dough specifically to eat it raw.

        • tipaye

          Me, too 😂

          • Barbi

            Ditto!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Thanks and For anyone concerned maybe consider using a cake batter extract instead if preferred —> https://amzn.to/2uPLK2o

      • motherfish

Wow! Never heard of such a thing – fun!

      • s

Has anyone used the cake batter extract? I’m nervous to use raw mix but extract sounds too good to be true. I read you can microwave flour to kill bacteria… maybe microwave the mix? Wondering if anyone has any ideas.

      • Robyn

I just clicked on the link for the extract. Just one question, how would that affect the recipe? I imagine the dry cake mix would give a certain texture to the ice cream which would now be missing if using only the extract ? I would love some feedback on this, I know it is nearly three years since the link was posted, but I am about to pin this pin, because it looks amazing. Thanks so much.

    • M

People can also heat treat it at home before mixing it in the ice cream. It’s fairly simple to do.

    • Stacy

You can microwave the mix to kill the bacteria. It’s simple and very effective.

  5. Keesh

This looks yummy iam definitely going to try this

  6. StephB

I made some of this a couple of weeks ago for my birthday!! Love all things cake batter!! It’s AMAZING!!!

  7. DealLovinMama

You may want to put a warning in the recipe for those who don’t read the comments. I would hate for those who aren’t aware to get sick. It could also be a liability for Hip2Save.

  8. Kristina

I love the recipes you have shared on your site! I hope to try this one soon!! Yum!

Just a little tip, to make this easier to share on Pinterest and get it seen more, a vertical image is definitely more visually appealing : ) And easier seen!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Thanks Kristina!

Risk is always relative. If you ever eat sushi, hollandaise, or burgers/steaks that aren’t well-done then you’re also taking a risk w/ food-borne illness. To each their own.

    • Cheryl

Just do a gluten free cake mix- what I have to do…..

  10. Christy

I need a keto version of this— I have a blood sugar disorder but I really miss cake batter flavored treats!

  11. s

Can you post your favorite regular ice cream recipes too? Please!

  12. jeanette

It’s not safe to consume raw flour, it needs to be baked first to kill off any bacteria. There are many ways to do this with a simple google search. Basically you just place the raw flour on a baking sheet and bake it (don’t know at what temp or for how long, but google has all the info), then just cool it and you can use it.

    • Stacy

      You can microwave it too!

  13. R

Can’t wait to try this! Cake batter flavor at Coldstone is our family’s favorite and we were just griping the other day about how crazy expensive Coldstone is when we go out as a family. Thanks! Going to surprise the husband 🙂

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      You’ll love this! Enjoy 😉

  14. OregonLexy

Yay perfect for my birthday 🎂 tomorrow 😊

    • Cassandra (Hip Sidekick)

      Yay! Happy birthday, OregonLexy!

  15. So confused

Do you make the cake batter according to the box? Or just use the dry mix?

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

In this case we are using the dry mix to flavor the ice cream. Hope that helps! 🙂

  16. Suzanne

How to heat treat raw flour: Simply spread two cups of flour on a baking sheet or Silpat, and bake for about 5 minutes at 350° F. Let cool completely. Then use the flour in your preferred recipe.

    • s

      Thank you!

    • OregonLexy

      THANKS!

  17. Corina

My daughter’s most missed ice cream since going dairy free… has anyone made an “ice cream” dairy free and yummy? Just curious… (Non allergic, dairy free for autoimmune).

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

I haven’t tried yet but you can use coconut milk from the can or almond milk, or a mix of both. I read that Almond Dream milk is thicker for a nice texture 👍

  18. Chelsea

I worked at coldstone creamy years ago as a teenager and this is exactly how they make Cake batter ice cream! It just yellow cake mix in there secret ice cream base recipe. Looks yummy!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh awesome!! Thanks for sharing 💕

  19. Tiffany Lockard

Do you have the caloric breakdown of a serving size by any chance?

  20. Ali

Ever made this recipe without an ice cream maker? Want to make “ice cream in a bag” with my nephew – think it would work with this recipe?
