Ulta also offers a bday present but you have to spend a certain amount of money a year. I got the email that my gift was available. I went to the store and the cashier said I had to spend $35 that day in store to reach the quota for a free gift. Hmmm not really a free gift and you tricked me into driving out of my way to find out. I cancelled my ulta emails and sent email to corporate, comparing them to Sephora, sho always makes you feel special during your bday, no matter how much you spend throughout the year.

    • poki2000

I never had to spend anything at Ulta I just went it with my email and got a free Mascara.

    • AZ

That isn’t true…the cashier doesn’t know what they’re talking about. On Ulta’s website you can see that it’s a free bday gift and there is no mention of making any minimum purchase each year in order to redeem it- all you need is the coupon that they email you. My mom and SIL are members of the program too, and don’t spend a time at Ulta…they get their gifts free yearly and have for the past 5 years!

      • Ofelia

No, that is accurate. To remain a rewards member, you have to use your card every so often. If you haven’t used your card in more than a year, you might get bumped from the rewards program. If the company is purging their system, you might not qualify for the gift.

        • AZ

No, it’s misinformation. I’ve worked at ULTA, and I am not sure where you are getting this from but it isn’t true. You don’t have to make a purchase to receive a birthday gift…membership doesn’t expire or randomly get deactivated lol. If you got removed from the rewards system for some reason, then that is a separate issue altogether. But there is no buy-in to remain in the rewards program itself…it’s FREE for a reason lol

    • Lel

You might want to call their customer service. I have not known that to be the case. Unless the email specified about a min purchase which would be odd for the Ulta birthday gifts.

    • Dealzgurl

Today is my birthday so I’ve gotten some good freebies. Starbucks now requires that your bday reward be redeemed on your actual bday which sucks.

Got my ULTA freebie last week and didn’t have to buy anything. I haven’t purchased from them in the past year if I’m remembering correctly. The cashier was snotty though.

With Sephora last year, I had to pay for shipping to get my bday freebie. I didn’t get an offer this year from them probably because I don’t really shop there.

      • Love to save

Why would getting the freebie on your birthday from Starbucks suck?… it’s free.

        • Bella

Lol right? I don’t get it either.

          • Dealzgurl

The freebie doesn’t suck…it’s the fact that you can only redeem it on your birthday. I don’t live in an area with a Starbucks. Before, it could be redeemed within a certain number of days which meant I had more time to be in an area with a Starbucks. With it only being on my birthday, it means I may not get to redeem it. That’s the part that sucks.

            • Zara

Most places only offer freebies on your actual birthday. I feel that if birthday freebies are a priority for someone, then they’d just have to make sure that they set aside time to redeem them. You can also redeem it at a Target w/ Starbucks inside, so you still have that option too. It’s a great perk any way you look at it!

            • Dealzgurl

Lol! Actually, most places in my area allow you several days to redeem birthday offers. I don’t get to redeem every offer but Starbucks is one that I like. And since the 3 Starbucks in my area closed, it’s not always feasible to get to the closest one no matter how important it might be.

            • Zara

But Starbucks doesn’t, so your local places’ policies are kind of irrelevant lol. If it’s that inconvenient for someone to find a Starbucks or Target, then the free drink is not all that important to begin with…but ok

        • Dylan

They used to let you use your free drink within like a week before and a week after your birthday – it was awesome! I appreciate all birthday freebies, but rarely get to use the ones that can only be redeemed on your actual birthday. I really love the ones that give you a few days to use it.

        • Laura

Might not have time or feel well on your birthday to enjoy it.

    • fuzzymitten

I haven’t had to spend anything to get my b-day gift at Ulta, this year they didn’t send me the email, so I sent them an email about it and got a link to get my gift.

    • Love to save

Never had to spend anything to get the free birthday gift at Ulta. That was a bad employee.

      • Lulu

Agreed. I haven’t shopped at Ulta in well over a year (maybe 18 months? give or take) and was able to redeem my bday gift without a problem- the IT cosmetics mascara. Not every employee knows the corporate policies all that well…you have to call guest services and speak to someone that can send you a bday gift coupon. It really wouldn’t be a “free” bday gift if you had to spend $$$ to get it lol

    • hrosana

is been years that i have not received Ulta emails nor my birthday freebie. And i am subscribe because I used to but not no more.

    • angela

Also chiming in to say not true. I just went in 2 weeks ago for my bday mascara and purchased nothing.

  2. Mimi

I put the birthday gift in my cart and got the message ‘Merchandise, excluding gift cards and eGift certificates, must be included in your order to qualify for your Birthday gift.’ Looks like a purchase IS required for this. Bummer.

    • 50ShadesofLipstick

No purchase required in-store, but online you have to make a purchase since Sephora isn’t going to ship you something for free.

Also, 2 day shipping is no longer $10/yr…it increased to $15 a year this past week.

      • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Thanks for the helpful feedback! It does appear there is a purchase requirement if redeeming online. For the 2 Day Shipping, we are still finding that to be $10 a year. Hope that helps!

        • 50ShadesofLipstick

I meant that it’s no longer $10 after the new changes to their Rewards program. This is what they sent out via email this past week…”starting on 9/26, all Flash Shipping auto-renewals & new memberships will be $15 a year for Beauty Insiders & VIB members”. So just for the next month, it’s $10 a year.

          • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Thanks for the heads up! We’ll have to keep an eye out for that!

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Thanks for letting us know! It looks like a purchase is required for online redemption, however there is no purchase required if going in store. We are updating the post now!

  3. Bee

I highly recommend the Bite lip product gift. Got one for my birthday and loved it!

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Thanks for the recommendation, Bee! Glad to hear how much you liked it!

  4. Belle

Do you actually get to choose the individual items that go into your bundle? Or are they random?

    • Dkp91576

Each bday quarter has a diff gift assigned, while supplies last. Then they get sub for something else.

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Hi Belle! There are usually a couple choices every quarter for Birthdays. When clicking through the link above you will find you get to choose from the Glamglow mask or the Lip set this time. Hope that helps!

    • ILoveTX

At Ulta, they change out the gift each quarter (which is what that other poster meant, I think). At Sephora you have your pick of 1 set (out of 1 options). You don’t get to pick what goes into the Sephora bundles, everyone gets the same thing in each. HTH!

      • ILoveTX

Sorry, I meant 1 gift out of 2 options*

    • Shawna

      I got to choose

  5. SM

I always get Sephora and Ulta’s free birthday gifts & I very rarely shop at either store. Had anyone ever done the free 15 minute makeover?

  6. brenda16

I used to get the free birthday gifts and stopped getting the emails. The cashier at Ulta told me to call customer service. CS told me you have to make a purchase during the year to be eligible for the free birthday gift.

    • Genevieve

I just spoke to Ulta about this, since I didn’t get my birthday gift coupon either this month…you don’t have to make a purchase to be eligible for the gift, as I haven’t shopped there this year and they said that it isn’t necessary to do so to get the bday gift, as long as you’re enrolled in the program and have the bday gift coupon. If you don’t get emails from Ulta anymore, then you simply have to ask that CS reset your email subscription. I did that just now and they resent the coupon. I’d call back and speak to someone else about this. If purchased were required then people could simply buy something and return it but keep the gift.

  7. ~Jenn~

There are actually 3 different gifts annually. Only one is available online. This year the online only Birthday gift is a Bumble and Bumble. Last year online only gift was Jack Black moisturizer and cleanser. I’ve never seen the gifts change unless they run out.
I’ll be saving my points now because Rouge will have the ability to purchase $100 Sephora gift cards for 2500 points, when they add them to the RB and while supplies last. As rouge I earn 1.5 points per dollar so it won’t take me long!!!

  8. hrosana

My birthday is September 4 and starting today I received my freebies, sephora email that I can go to the store and redeem for 1 of 2 options and free dessert at olive garden.

    • Jess

That birthday dessert isn’t free. You have to purchase $10 worth if food I think.

  9. Shawna

    got mine. thank you

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Woohoo! You’re welcome, Shawna!

  10. Bunny

I got the free donut and coffee for my birthday. Jason’s deli also sent a $5 off purchase coupon that was good for a month!

  11. Jennifer

50 Shades is right, I just got a letter from Sephora about the Rouge sale starting Friday. They are changing the point system for Rouge members and increasing the shipping deal from $10 to $15.

Also, I’m wondering where the phrase “beauty bundle” came from. Sephora still calls it, as they have for over 20 years now, a birthday gift. It’s usually two deluxe sample sizes and it’s the same choice of items for the entire year. It doesn’t change quarterly.

    • 50ShadesofLipstick

I think that H2S might just be calling it a “bundle” for lack of a better word, but you’re correct in that it’s just a bday gift in a box, consisting of a couple of deluxe samples (the Bite gift this year also included a foil sample of Bite’s Agave lip scrub and lip balm). You pick one gift or the other, but each gift includes the same items for everyone. The poster talking about quarterly gifts was referring to Ulta, as that is how they do things for their bday gifts.

  12. muquee

I joined Sephora a while back. My birthday is in 10 days and I have NOT received a birthday email. Do you just go into the store or do you have to have an email from them?

  13. muquee

I went into my account online and it is there. I don’t see an account number though, how do you redeem?

    Thank you.

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Hi there! If you are trying to grab it online, an additional purchase is required. If grabbing in store, there is no purchase necessary. The details of the offer do list that if you have any trouble grabbing your offer, you should contact customer service. 1-877-737-4672 Hoping you can grab it soon!

  14. Lisa

I went into my store at the end of my birth month. I mentioned that I had my birthday a few weeks earlier and asked if I could get the free gift. I hadn’t shopped in Sephora for over a year. They were able to pull up my account and gave me the free gift!
