In 2016, a former Procter & Gamble executive, Leslie Guzman, launched a successful Kickstarter campaign to produce an alternative to the popular Elf on the Shelf and Mensch on the Bench that celebrates the Hispanic heritage. Target was intrigued by her story – and now Lupita is sold exclusively at Target!
Guzman retired early from P&G in 2015 so she could spend more time with her son Diego, who suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy. During this time, she also created Lupita to help share messages of acceptance, selflessness, and being proud of who you are to others around the world.
The Lupita storybook encourages all children to accept differences, celebrate other cultures and beliefs, and do good deeds, reminding them what the season is all about. Also, Guzman says that “each Lupita doll has a bit of magic in her, and she will inspire children to do good deeds in hopes that the Three Kings will bring them a gift on January 6th.”
