Green Monday Christmas Shopping

If you missed out on (or strategically avoided 😉) all the Cyber Monday and snoozy Black Friday online deals and still have a lot of holiday shopping to do, have no fear – Green Monday is coming! 🙌🏻

What’s Green Monday, you ask? It is the biggest online shopping day in December and is often called “Cyber Monday 2” because it’s the second biggest day for online holiday shopping. It always falls on the second Monday of December when there are approximately just 10 shipping days left before Christmas. This year Green Monday will be December 10th!

And the best part about this holiday is that retailers usually offer awesome online deals so you don’t even have to leave your home! In fact, in 2017, Target offered $20 off your $100 online purchase, which made for some pretty sweet deals (and would be awesome this year, too, considering they just offered 10% off all Target gift cards!).

Hopefully, they’ll bring back this HOT $20 off $100 online purchase offer again this year! 🤞🏻

Also, December 14th, 2018, is Free Shipping Day when thousands of online stores offer free shipping with the promise that they’ll deliver it before Christmas. This is a great way to complete some of your last minute holiday shopping without having to head in store and brave the crowds (you can’t beat shopping from home in your pajamas! 😉 ).

Free Shipping Day gets bigger every year! In fact, over the last few years, this holiday has brought in more sales for retailers than Black Friday 😱, so hopefully, we’ll be able to snag lots of free shipping deals on this day!

One of my orders came in one of those green Amazon boxes with the Grinch. I was hoping that would continue. I saved my box to put a present in. I’m not going to wrap it. It is so cute the way it is.

    • Shannon

I hope I get one of those boxes they are so cute!!

    • Jo

I got one of the Grinch boxes, it said “Your child’s favorite toy has arrived! It’s the cardboard…
      So hillarious!

      • Tara

LMAO –funny. I didn’t even know they had these boxes

    • Myrah

I recently got one of those boxes. It said I bought socks (I didn’t, it was an echo dot…LOL) This box really is cute!!!

Love the Grinch box! I got one as well this season. Unfortunately, UPS is so overwhelmed (it seems) that I fear ordering anything with a “promise” of delivery by Christmas. One year I did that (2 years ago?) and I was literally chasing the UPS truck on Christmas Eve trying to obtain a gift I was still waiting on. It was awful. Almost nothing is arriving on time and I can’t say I’m surprised, these UPS trucks (and poor drivers!) are STOCKED to the roof with boxes. I have no idea how they do it this time of year.

    • Betty

I remember one year there was a bunch if packages that didn’t get delivered by Christmas and UPS/Fedex had to schedule an apology afterwards. It’s not a great position to be in for both the consumer and delivery company 🙁

    • kayti

But as with retail, they should hire more help this time of year! I go to church with a few drivers and all I think is “be thankful you have a job and stop complaining”

      • NV2007

They actually DO hire more help this time of year, actually. However, they can’t just create more trucks and additional routes. It really isn’t that simplistic. The drivers often have “runners” that assist with bringing packages to the door as the driver is often sorting in the truck (or vice versa). Often drivers have to offload their packages to another driver to try to alleviate some of the delivery pressure (because, remember, they also have their regular commercial accounts to delivery for – business to business accounts like mine that suffer during this time of year as well). There is additional help hired for hubs as well for package sorting and loading. The volume is staggering. I’m sure UPS drivers (and FedEx) are grateful for their jobs but you really don’t realize how many hours they are forced (forced) to put in this time of year. It’s exhausting for them (and no, I’m not married or related to a driver or anyone affiliated with these delivery companies – I’m just sympathetic to their situations since we’ve become very friendly with our drivers at my business and they are overwhelmed).

        • NV2007

          Oy, my typos. Sorry!

        • heather

Well said-in college, i was a “runner” during the holidays. One of the most fun jobs I had, but the volume of boxes they deliver-even back then, before the internet shopping explosion-was astounding. In training, we were told not to run while delivering, but there was just so much, you just had to. This was over 20 years ago. I can’t even imagine what it’s like now.

        • Linda

Thank you for your kind words. I do have 2 family members that work for one of these companies and they are working 20 + hours a week and no they are not complaining that is just the way it is. they were talking about not having enought semi’s, and semi drivers to deliver and that they have been trying to rent out as many as possible. as a family we know they will be very busy from middle of november to middle of January and they are not allowed any time off.
what sucks even more is that 3 other members of my family are in health care so this year we were not able to be together Thanksgiving nor will be together Christmas.
So I do know that they are doing everything possible to deliver those packages but there are just so many and to be honest I’m ordering most of this years gifts online, so much easier than driving 30 miles to store and then not being able to find item or wait in line. we drove to Meijer to purchase something that was advertised and showed that it was still in stock only to get there and no item. drove 60 miles and then I came home and ordered a similar item from Kohls.
Hoping everyone gets their packages-don’t wait till the last minute to order though.
          Merry Christmas.

      • Sarah

I guarantee they are glad they have their job but a person’s body can only handle so much. The buildings try to hire more help but most times they’re unreliable or don’t want to “work” so the drivers get stuck. My husband has had 250 stops a day since the beginning of November and hasn’t gotten off before 9pm. He’s missed so many sporting events and concerts and since they’ve forced them to do saturdays as well in our area, we finally had to go get our Christmas tree without him. As grateful as they are to be working, it’s just long grueling work, in the cold weather with several hours in the dark this time of year. I’m grateful he does it for us but still wish he’d get a full weekend to recover after such a long week.

        • heather

Same here my hubby is mailcarrier. This time of year he is loaded with packages, late hours and he goes out of his way to make sure people get packages on Christmas Eve, on a foot route no less :/

      • Jack K

Gotta make sure everyone knows I go to church. Yet I’m obviously a judgmental person. Funny.

      • Jack K

I’m an engineer at FedEx and you literally have no idea what you’re talking about. Just hire more seasonal people, should fix it right? So simple minded… blatant ignorance.

        • ellaci

So, instead of the “knock down”, why don’t you explain it for us so we CAN understand it. Educate us…

    • Melissa

My son is a package loader at UPS and we have a pretty small hub in our area (off season typically 5500 packages each day), but now the package load has more than doubled (11,000+ pieces each day) and his start time is now 2:15am for loading trucks (instead of 4:45am). It’s bananas! Plus he’s doing a driver helper route today too, so it’s going to be an 16 hour day for him.

    • CJ

UPS-chaser here too! I went all the way down the block on after my son’s cell phone (his “big” gift!) Bc I had to sign for it. I never sign for anything just had a 55″ 4HD smart TV delivered to my house while no one was home.e and it sat in the front lawn all day till we got home…no need to sign for that!! Ha). Anyway he’d have had nothing b7g on Christmas had I not ran after the truck. Lesson learned. Don’t order that late and count on it being there!

      • Becky

My husband has worked for UPS for 19 years, in management. Started out loading. He leaves at 4am every day, including Saturdays, and doesn’t get home until 10:30-11pm. Trust me when I say that everyone involved is working beyond their hardest to ensure packages are delivered in a timely manner.

  3. Caitlin

Does Pampered Chef ever do free shipping?

  4. Renee

Anyone have a Target 20% coupon they won’t be using that you could email me?? Would really appreciate it!

  5. melissa griese

anyone know if shutterfly participates in free shipping day? Their shipping fees are always outrageous.

    • celticmommie

One thing that could alleviate some of the strain is companies combining orders. In one day, I got EIGHT packages from Target. Granted, it could be different shipping centers, but I doubt they were ALL different. We have Amazon nearby and even they’ll deliver multiple packages at a time with one item each.

    • gwenny182

Amazon combines all my orders and puts them in 1 box 🙂 I do little no rush orders to get the digital credit and everything ends up in 1 box.

    • Surgibelle

Agreed. I had one order of 6 items ( same items, different colors) from Macy’s. It was broke up into 5 YES, FIVE different orders. I appreciate them getting what we request, but if they had an automated system or something to ask if we would prefer them combined or willing to wait for a different date, I would be perfectly fine with that. That’s a lot of manual labor AND cardboard/plastic to reuse, ♻️ recycle.
I need to go plant another tree. Lol

  7. Cathy has free shipping all season long also!q

  8. Ashley

anyone know if kohls will participate? Trying to decide when to use my yes2you rewards. Anyone know when the 30% off for card holders is this month?

    • Cathy

      12/9 Kohl’s 30% off starts

Haven’t had any problems with ups delivery. Fed x on the other hand has made some blunders.
Our Xbox 1x was delivered down the street. We didn’t know that. They received our box. They put my Xbox in her open garage where it sat for 2days until she realized they left it there and then opened it mistakenly. No clue if it even works.
Then our monitor was delivered in the front of our garage in a pile of snow, no bag, while all packages have historically been left under our accessible covered front patio. Along with our package another item was left from a family that lives all the way at the end of the street. A massive, too large for me to pick up or transport, ride-on Denali.
Was never able to reach fed x by phone so we had to deliver the packages ourselves.
Funny thing is, the house with the Denali had a container for the drivers to take a snack bc they made their lives easier! I didn’t take the snack;)
The issue for me isn’t the timeliness as much as the mistaken deliveries. If someone else gets my stuff, I have to put a claim in and try to recover in a short period of time. Try to reach seller and shipper. I’m out the money and may not be able to replace that item if it’s sold out. Bad situation.
Wish Christmas would be about something more than buying, sales, money, greed, material gifts and exhaustion. How I wish I could go back and redo. 1 small gift, a celebration, family unity and charitable acts.

    • Sondra216379

Fed Ex is THE WORST, my stuff is almost always damaged when they deliver!

  10. wlw2662

I love the Grinch so I’m really hoping to get one of these boxes!!!!

  11. Suz

I recently moved to a rather rural area and online shopping has helped me out a lot. I really appreciate all the delivery services (UPS, FedEx, USPS) especially when something is brought to my doorstep. We have a fairly steep driveway, as do many others in my neighborhood, and in a northern climate, there may be snow and ice to contend with, even when I try to remove it. Thank you, delivery folks (and their families too)!

  12. Marie

That Grinch box made me laugh so hard….Where did they get that photo of my husband?

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      LOL! Too funny!
