More Dollar Tree stores are coming!

Dollar Tree just announced that they are closing up to 390 Family Dollar stores this year, and another 200 stores will be converted from Family Dollar into Dollar Tree locations.

The Family Dollar brand was purchased by Dollar Tree in 2015 for nearly $9 billion in cash and stock in the hopes to go toe-to-toe with rival stores like Dollar General. Unfortunately, the Family Dollar chain has continued to struggle. Sources report that Family Dollar’s failures stem from neglected stores and poor merchandise selection. In response, Dollar Tree also plans to renovate 1,000 Family Dollar locations.

Will this affect Dollar Tree prices?

Dollar Tree is still under pressure by its investors to completely sell Family Dollar. Those investors also want Dollar Tree to start offering items at prices other than $1. Dollar Tree has responded by saying it will diversify its merchandise and prices on a test basis, which means we might start seeing higher price points at our local Dollar Trees. 😥

Is your location closing?

Dollar Tree has not yet released a list of closing locations. Company officials have stated, “The total number of stores closed may change depending on the Company’s ability to achieve material rent concessions from landlords.”

I always liked dollar tree better than dollar general, family dollar because everythings $1. I hope they don’t change that

  2. Lisa

Some dollar tree stores have already raised prices to $1.25 and $1.50 I think this will cause more price hikes. I use to be a die hard Dollar Tree shopper until I moved and discovered the 99 cents only store! I’m obsessed!

    • rosemary

99 cent only is now mostly 99 cent. Some items r as high as 5.99 now

  3. Tiffany

Yes..,neglected family dollar store is ours by my house in Md. indeed….it is a complete dump inside and out!

  4. Bryant

Family Dollar Stores are such dumps. They are usually trashy inside and understaffed. Good riddance.

    • missy

      I totally agree Bryant

    • M

Agreed. I only shop there about once every 5 years. 🤔
But Dollar Tree is a weekly trip. ❤️❤️
I would think more about my purchases if they raised the prices. $1 is worth a chance on their stuff.

The Family Dollar store in my little hometown just got a big remodel and they added a Dollar Tree to it so it’s a combo store.

  6. Ana

Family dollar definitely needs to close it seems the store is always a big mess and over priced in my opinion. Hoping to see more dollar trees !😍

I’m conflicted. I like Dollar Tree, and would appreciate having one within walking distance. However, I wouldn’t be able to get a Magnum ice cream bar anymore if the Family Dollar near me was converted to a Dollar Tree. I love Magnum double caramel ice cream bars. I get one everytime I go to Family Dollar.

Also, Family Dollar carries more brand name items that I can use coupons on and sometimes has sales or clearance that make the price reasonable. Dollar Tree stores in my city seldom have brands and/or sizes that I can use coupons on when I have those coupons. Also Dollar Tree stores here have a limit of four coupons per visit. Family Dollar allows more coupons per visit. They also allow you to combine store coupons and item coupons. Dollar Tree doesn’t do that.

On a side note, I looked through the clearance bins at Family Dollar on 3/2. I found a 40 ct of sheer Band-Aids for $1. I had already added the $1 off one Band-Aid product coupon to my phone number. Most of the bandages weren’t in the box, so I spent around 30 minutes sifting through the bin to find the rest. I only had to pay the $0.09 sales tax.

Wow sara, that was an exhausting post. 😞

Our Dollar General stores were like a big dirty garage sale! Unorganized and very dirty! I quit going to those years ago! I much prefer Dollar Tree!

  9. Jerrica

If prices go up at dollar tree I will not continue to shop there. It’s the DOLLAR tree, that’s what I’ve always liked about it, everything was ya know a DOLLAR or less…. This may not be the best move for them!

    • Mellie

Agreed. I would not shop at a junk store if it costs the same as other stores.

  10. Juma

I see a name change coming so that the prices will be going up also.

  11. Ellie

I think part of the success of Dollar Tree is people filling their carts without much thinking put into it. You get what you need plus a bunch of crap you don’t really need because it’s cheap. If they increase the price even by $0.50, it will affect how people shop there. I personally will think twice about buying an item and my total purchases will be lower in the end.

    • Lori

      Agreed!

  12. Pam

You think Family Dollar stores are dumps, I could say the same thing about Dollar Tree. We have two stores in our area. One in West Lafayette, IN and one on the Lafayette side. Every time you go in either one they are dirty there is hardly any merchandise on the shelf and carts full of boxed merchandise that needs to be put on the shelves. How are you suppose to make any money if the merchandise is not on the shelf to buy? I have written to Dollar Tree several times concerning this, but nothing changes. I feel that the reason most businesses fail is do to poor management. People only care about the bottom line and don’t want to put forth the effort. I hope Dollar Tree sees these posts.

I stopped shopping at 99c only stores because they raised the price on a lot of items. I would be MAD if dollar tree did the same.

    • Dee

I work at the 99 cents only store and yes alot of items are priced above 99cents. But there are still many great finds at 99cents or even lower. The reason for the prices is so the store can offer a wide range of products at a great price point. Take for instance the starbucks frapp drinks are priced $3-$5. At the 99 cents only store its $1.99+ crv.

They are building a new Dollar General about a mile from my house, and now, a sign says the Family Dollar, close by is becoming a Dollar Tree. So, looks like I will have Dollar General AND Dollar Tree both within walking distance. Hmmmmmm….

  15. Melissa

It seems like the biggest problem is that the shareholders feel like Dollar General is Dollar Trees competitor, which I don’t agree with at all?? Dollar General is a grocery stores competitor. Dollar Tree has a niche that is all its own, I hope they don’t mess with it

  16. E

Family dollar and dollar general are always gross and crappy. And AWFUL customer service. I don’t shop at either anymore. If dollar tree raised their prices I wouldn’t go there any more, either. I’m too cheap, haha. I find better deals on cheap stuff like small toys and hairbows at target’s clearances.

  17. Josie

Too many people go these dollar stores and get carried away. I went to a yard sale last week and a woman had bought tons of stuff at Dollar Tree. She was asking people to just take it all for free. Nobody wanted it because it was all a bunch of junk.
I’m a teacher and can say that in my experience, the items donated to our classroom that come from dollar stores are of such low quality that they’re usually useless. The crayon color pigments are weak and waxy. The pencils are incredibly hard to sharpen. I think long and hard before I shop there.

  18. Deb E

I have two smaller Dollar Tree stores within walking distance, which I stop by when I’m out doing errands. I only buy a few items at a time and whatever I can fit in my backpack, so I usually find a thing or two I need. I mainly stick with brand names when I can find them, like the 2/$1 Hallmark cards. I stopped going to the 99 cent store since they didn’t always mark their increasing prices and found they were not that great of deal. Plus driving there and not finding much, made the special trip disappointing. Last time I was there, they only had two cashiers and the long lines to check out went way back into the aisles, ugg. I hope they don’t raise the Dollar Tree prices also but it sure is convenient when I just need a battery or something small and can stop by on my walk.

  19. Krissy

So glad our local Family Dollar is closing!! The employees are always standing out in front of the store smoking like freight trains 🚂! We live in a little touristy town and it’s such a bad look🙄

  20. Shari

    1. I had to purchase a few items for an elderly friend due to a Family Dollar being close to her residence. 2. The other time I HAD to purchase an item or two on a vacay as it was the only store nearby/open. 3. I got headaches EVERY TIME 🥺 due to it smelling like a TIRE store!! That plastic or polyurethane was overwhelming…never will go back unless desperate! Do you ever feel like you need a shower after shopping? 🙁🤣

  21. Pat

Have never liked Family Dollar, but talk about neglected stores, Dollar Tree is suffering the same thing. I used to love going to Dollar Tree when a new store opened near me. Now it’s nasty, dirty, empty shelves all the time.

  22. Marie

Shareholders better prepare to lose their shirts! Pricing items above 1.00 in Dollar Tree will finally kill it for good, like it did with all the other stores that tried that model. Walmart will come out the winner. How many shareholders in Dollar Tree own Walmart too. Makes you wonder….Walmart wants to kill Dollar Tree.
