Heads up Capital One users!

Capital One recently determined that an outside individual obtained unauthorized access of personal information relating to people who had applied for credit card products and Capital One credit card customers. This unauthorized access occurred on March 22 and 23, 2019.

This data breach affects over 100 million people in the United States and approximately 6 million people in Canada. The information accessed by the breach may include social security numbers, names, birth dates, addresses and more.

Capital One is currently investigating the data breach and says that it is unlikely that the hacker shared the information or used it for fraud. Affected customers will be notified by Capital One through a variety of channels once the investigation has been finished and will be offered free credit monitoring and identity protection.

Any ideas to know if we were affected? We hold card with them but don’t know

      • Rebecca

        That’s a different thing entirely.

      • Kathleen

That link is related to the Equifax data breach, it’s a different company

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

It looks like they will contact you if they find you were affected. Hope that helps!

  2. Jennifer G

I received a text notification asking if I was making purchases in Florida when I live in Texas. They were able to decline the purchases and will be sending me a new card.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks a bunch for the helpful feedback!

    • mel

I don’t think that has anything to do with this issue. Seems most banks will alert customers of fishy activity nowadays. My husband got a call a few months ago. Apparently someone was making small charges, under $25 or so for a few days, then got ballsy and tried to make a $2500+ purchase at Best Buy in another state. It’s a card he uses a few times a month, so he thinks the number got skimmed when he used it to fill up for gas.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Oh interesting. Thanks for sharing with us, Krystal!

I heard if you were affected by this all they will be offering you is free credit checking. That is what people trusted them to do in the first place.

    • Patty

Exactly what I just said to my husband. Does Capital One think they can do something different than what they are supposed to be doing now? What a joke!

    • K

Preach! I’m so tired of all these companies incompetence in protecting our information. I’ve been through this with 2 health insurance companies, Target, the IRS, etc and now possibly Capital One

  4. Rebecca

Social security numbers & credit card numbers weren’t included, was just various info from people who applied, nothing to worry about with this one. The idiot did it just to see if he could it seems.

    • Jen

But if you read more it says he got 140,000 social security numbers & 80,000 bank account numbers. As well as social insurance numbers, which is Canada’s version of social security. Basically he got into applications where people & businesses applied for secured credit cards. Luckily he was arrested, so hopefully he really didn’t have time to get the info out.

      • Deb

        He’s a “she.”

        • Mary

          He’s trans.

          • Sara

I think that’s what the quotation marks were for.

            • Deb

Umm, no, they weren’t. I was just trying to make the point that everyone just assumes that it was a man, but it was a woman.

              • Sara

Then the quotation marks were unnecessary. In most comment sections when transgender people are involved, quotation marks around a gender usually mean sarcasm.

      • Sara

The 140,000 SSNs were only taken from people who used their SSN as their employer indentification number to apply for small business credit cards. The 80,000 bank account numbers were only the ones linked to secured credit cards.

        • Sara

More specifically, it was small business cards for sole proprietorships.

      • Sara

It wasn’t just secured credit cards. Considering the number of applications affected, it also included unsecured personal cards and unsecured small business cards. Capital One hasn’t issued over 100 million secured cards.

      • Rebecca

I did read another article that was more detailed and had conflicting info so, who knows.

  5. Taylor S

PLEASE read the info that says they don’t believe the hacker had time to disperse the info before the arrest. Thanks!

  6. Deb

Imagine what could be accomplished in the world if the people who use their talents to harm and defraud others used them, instead, for good…

(You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one…)

You aint kidding Deb! Ill tell ya if i had a tenth of their knowledge, skill, brains etc…id be wealthy as anything and id be doing the right thing not even thinking about a wrong thing. Sitting there with a mai tai at 2pm on my own island with sexy men fanning me….yes im a dreamer too 😆

  7. LoJo

It was a woman who hacked they system and she’s been arrested.

Thanks for posting the link about equifax as well. My husband wasn’t effected but I was when I checked the link. Because my bank caught the charges & I only had to go 10 days without a debit card I just qualified for the 3 years of credit monitoring. I’ll take it! I’m just proud to know now how they got my info. I was worried it was because of an online purchase or a scanner put on an atm or gas pump. Now I won’t be so paranoid. Honestly we all need to go to credit cards & cash only. It’s too easy for hackers to get our bank info. I even bought RFID sleeves to put our debit cards in.

I cannot tell you how much I despise this company. We have been on their spam mailing list for 3 years now. We get offers for credit cards at least 2 a month. I have saved a bag full of them for a while. I called them, messaged them and asked them repeatedly to please stop wasting paper and stop sending me unsolicited mail. Every time they said it would take 4-6 weeks before it stops. It never did. How can they think that I would ever sign up for one of their services or products when they are so inconsiderate?

    • E

Us too. It’s like weekly junk mail! No we aren’t getting your credit cards! We follow Dave Ramsey! No credit cards!

This trend of breaching peoples information is not good. Does anyone know if this can affect someone from buying a new home ?

  11. Deb

So now everyone knows what’s in your wallet, eh?

    • k80

Deb !! Im stealing ur joke. Im fully commited to steering the dinner conversation so i can throw this joke in. 🤞

      • Jen

        HAHAHAHA

    • Tonia

      Good one, Deb!

    • Tori

OMG don’t post things like that when I’m drinking……I almost died from choking and laughing 😂

    • Gina G.

      I love this! :-))

I love Capital One… We have 5 credit cards with them and have always had a great customer experience with them… I once called about an issue and we got to talking and long story short about a week later a package came from them and it was a camera, tri-pod, SD card and case with a card saying to use it at my husband’s upcoming 20th high school reunion!!! They have always handled issues fast so hopefully this isn’t that big of an issue… We had issue with our local bank getting breached and it was a hassle to use out own debit cards due to them “over monitoring” from the breach that we switched to just using our capital one everyday and paying it off… Plus I love all the rewards cash back!!! Hopefully it all works out😉

    • Wendytx2

I’m sorry? What? A credit card company gave you camera equipment and a note that said take it to his reunion. That truly an unbelieveable story? I spoke with some one that works for Capital One everyday and she just laughed.

      • Michelle

Definitely happened I took pictures of it because I was so shocked especially when I looked it up and it’s about $100 set on Amazon… We are very good customers and anytime I have ever called about anything they are super nice… I would post the pictures on here but there is no way to do that on this site…

        • Gina G.

WOW, that’s awesome! I wish Capital One would do that for me, I would definitely use it at my 31st & my husband’s 36th high school reunions!! 🙂

  13. Selah

I wish people would use their skills for good instead of evil. Glad he was arrested.

  14. Jen

Thanks for posting these things. We were part of the Equifax and are getting reimbursed for the identity theft protection we already had (thankfully). We have a main cc and a backup through 2 different banks. Both were stolen this month.

  16. Sara

I’m just waiting for my next $125.

  17. Heather

At this point, the list is probably shorter for the companies that HAVEN’T given my info to hackers. I might as well just tattoo my personal information on my forehead.

    • Sara

I don’t think she was trolling. The story is genuinely unbelievable. A person may do this on their own, but a company in the business of making money doesn’t without strings attached.

      • Michelle

I don’t understand why people find the story unbelievable… The reason we called customer service in the first place was to get pre-authorization for a very large purchase we were making… I’m guessing since we are very good customers that’s why they did it… I guess I’m just shocked that people find the story unbelievable… We have 5 different cards with capital one and use them daily because with have had nothing but issues with our local bank. Maybe I just have a way with customer service but I was definitely surprised when the camera came and the hand written note😉

    • Sara

Sorry. I don’t know why my reply went to you. I was replying to Tina9222.

  18. riss

Is this only for current capital one card holders or even the past ones?

  19. Tina9222

Wendytx2, YOU ARE A MEAN ONE!!!
Mind your manners lady!!! People like u shouldn’t comment on nice sites like this one,you ruin it for one person sharing an experience that maybe happened. It’s odd but likely…troll someplace else!!!
