Starbucks Replacing Plastic Straws w/ Strawless Lids | Like a Sippy Cup for Adults
Starbucks is cutting down on single-use plastics!
As was announced last summer, Starbucks locations will be eliminating plastic straws from every store worldwide by 2020.
To date, thousands of Starbucks stores across the U.S. and Canada have already starting eliminating single use plastic drinking straws and in their place, they are serving all cold drinks with a strawless cold-cup lid just like the ones pictured (kind of like an adult sippy cup).
The lid that is replacing the straws is also made of plastic, but its polypropylene content can be widely recycled making the lid more sustainable and more socially responsible.
These new strawless lids will become the standard for all iced coffee, tea and espresso beverages. Paper straws or straws made from compostable plastic will be provided for Frappuccino beverages; some stores may already have these alternative-material straws available.
If you prefer a straw, consider bringing your own Eco-Friendly Reusable Straws!
Germs . Unwrapped like food, gas station, server hand germs, coffee cup lids out in open to touch. How many take from the middle of pile because the tops wre touched a dozen times. I’m all for new inventions but not great for kids.
Wonderful!
Maybe some day will have some eco-friendly contents too!
Soooo…. They’re going to get rid of the plastic straw but instead replace the cup with a lid….. Hows that environmentally helpful???
straws are not recyclable but the lids are.
Neither the cups or the lids are currently recyclable. This is a worthless gesture.
I rather have non-sweeten candy straws – eatable and disposable. The more you eat the more they dissolve.
As someone who needs a straw because of facial paralysis I find this troublesome. So now I need to make a big deal to get a straw? Or do I just avoid Starbucks all together?
This is an issue in oceans? So make a plastic lid that is easier to recycle??? If your pulling a lid out of the ocean to recycle, it seems you solved the problem by removing the lid from the ocean. Your marketing team needs to rethink this one!!!!! My guess, if your a Democrat, this makes sence. We all know now how a Democrat thinks. Wait, too much credit on the thinking part.
Then go get a metal straw or wooden straw. A lot of stores have been selling them and it isn’t even expensive. 🙄
All you have to do is get reusable straws. Amazon or Ebay has them
Carry your own stainless steel straws like many others are beginning to do. Amazon has tons to choose from with cool travel zipper cases.
BYO – There are metal straws (with cleaning brushes) now 😊
To go drinks produce tons of plastic. Look at the picture – is a straw really the problem here? In my ideal world we would sit down for a coffee or iced tea and take the 5 minutes to drink it in peace. The return the China cup or glass to the counter. Better for our health and the environment.
But it’s still a plastic lid and cup. How is this a “win”? That’s sad and such a low bar
Straws are much more impactful than other plastics. And if you really need a straw, bring your own.
Oh, give me a break 🙄
why plastic cups , why not thick paper cups and straws .
I was in Italy for a weekend and I was served a drink with a straw made of pasta! I was amazed by the idea! The straw lasted in perfect condition and shape until I finished my drink (about 20 min) and did not affected the taste of the drink at all.
So what! I fill up my water bottle at mountain equipment co op if urban. In rural canada, i fill up my water bottle from the tap. I make my own coffee and put it in a thermos.
Totally meaningless gesture. The polypropylene cups and lids are currently not being recycled. I suspect this amounts to a net increase in plastic pollution.
We got a green dissolvable straw in a drink in the northeast and we used it, chewed it and carried it along with us on the week’s vacation to play with and it never dissolved was probably just as thick and strong as a regular straw.
We’ve also got the sippy adult coffee cups with a tiny lid at a cheap gas station, why didn’t they choose this idea? I guess n hope we get more rewards stars now that they’re saving on the straws cost, just sayin 😁
