Subaru Recalls Nearly 500,000 Vehicles Due to the Possibility of Exploding Airbags
There’s another airbag recall in the news!
Subaru is recalling 497,922 vehicles to replace the front passenger airbag inflators. These are the same vehicles that were part of a recall in which defective Takata airbag inflators received temporary replacements until permanent ones were available. Dealers will now permanently replace the passenger side airbag inflators, free of charge.
The recalled airbag inflators may explode if a propellant they contain degrades after long-term exposure to high humidity or extreme temperatures, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In this situation, sharp metal fragments could strike passengers and cause serious injury or death. Subaru said there have been no crashes or deaths related to this issue.
Subaru has begun notifying owners of vehicles affected by this recall, which include the following models:
- 2009 to 2013 Subaru Forester
- 2003 to 2006 Subaru Baja
- 2004 to 2011 Subaru Impreza
- 2004 to 2014 Subaru WRX (Including STi models)
- 2003 to 2014 Subaru Legacy
- 2003 to 2014 Subaru Outback
- 2005 to 2006 Saab 9-2X
Subaru owners may contact Subaru customer service at 844-373-6614. Saab owners may contact Saab customer service at 800-955-9007. Owners can also look up their 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) or the make, model, and year of their vehicle on NHTSA’s website to find out whether their vehicle is affected by this recall.

OMG we were never told this was a temporary fix. Hopefully they will get it right this time
I just told my husband and he’s like.. they fixed that already. So I showed him that it’s a new one. Ugh. We have a Tribeca which isnt in your list but its included in the recall.
Wait, wait one darn sec. I just had this replacement done last month. You mean to tell me that it was a temporary fix and I got to go back to the dealership again? Smh.
We are loyal Subaru owners and I have to say how this has been handled..we are disappointed
