FREE Spectrum Broadband & Wi-Fi Access for Student Households
Have the kiddos at home due to school closings?
Beginning on March 16th, Charter Communications will be offering FREE broadband and Wi-Fi access from Spectrum for 60 days to households with K-12 kiddos or college students that do not already have a spectrum subscription!
This free 60-day broadband offer will make it possible for students without the internet to continue their school work without interruption and will deliver speeds at any level up to 100 Mbps! Installation fees will also be waived for new student households. If you want to sign up for this free broadband service from Spectrum, just call 1-844-488-8395.
Additionally, Charter Communications also plans to open its Wi-Fi hotspots and will avoid terminating service to any residential or small business customer because of their inability to pay their bills due to the disruptions caused by the Coronavirus. They will also waive late fees due to the virus’s impacts.

(Thanks, Laura!)
Wow!! They sound like a great company! We have tried for years to get them but they are not in our area. Comcast would never be that generous!
It’s not a great company. The jack the prices up, don’t give discounts etc. the only thing they have going for them is they don’t have data caps like Xfinity or AT&T
I second Laure. We have spectrum and I hate it! Internet hardly ever works. Constantly resetting modem (as told to do so by customer service) only for it to work for an hour then stops again. Also prices keep rising also. It’s very frustrating. Only reason we haven’t switched is because we plan to list our home for sale this summer. Otherwise I would be done with them.
I agree with both Laure and Jln227 – Spectrum can’t even support their current customers, we pay $75 a month for internet only and it rarely works. My husband works from home all the time and said great, will I even be able to get any work done with all of these kids online? Sadly, they’re the only option without data caps.
Jln227. I dont know if this would or if you have done it but I would take the modem in and switch it out at the cable store or see if they can send you a different modem. I know the modems offered in my area were recently changed to newer modems. That helped with my modem issues.
Comcast is offering something similar in our area.
Thank you so much, Jill!
We hate spectrum too. $200 for cable and internet. Started at $85 and just keeps going up but nothing is added to the service. They give no discounts or credits for anything, even if the service goes out. They only give benefits to new customers. We would switch but spectrum is the only thing available here. How about an internet bill credit for us loyal customers who spend an arm and a leg for crappy service?!
Exactly! I wish we could get something other than spectrum!
I agree with the others. This is not a great company. In my area, this is basically the only option and it’s a monopoly. They are always changing prices and wanting you add more services.
I have spectrum and I’ve had it for years. Initially you get the new customer discount and after a year your service prices goes way up… I spoke with spectrum customer service shortly after my year of having their service because the amount my bill went up to, just for Internet, was outrageous to me. After speaking with customer service they gave me a customer appreciation discount on my bill from that point on. That discount made my bill the same price it was during the new customer discount period. I should say just call and speak to customer service about getting a customer discount especially if you’ve had their service for over a year. If the first representative you speak with won’t help you with this ask to s speak with someone else. I think I had to be transferred to the department you would speak with if you were canceling your service. They tend to have discounts available that the other representative don’t have because their job is to make those offer that keep you as their customer.
It would be nice to give a 60 day discount to current customers as well. I am a college student, and my son is in middle school. I pay $60 a month for just internet.
Same. Called yesterday for a discount and even after threatening to go to ATT they wouldn’t budge.
Same. Wish they would give discounts to existing customers
Right? Me too!
Agree 100%! Been with spectrum for internet for 10+ years and get nothing?!?
Agree! What about the middle class families that have existing WiFi – have paid for years? The govt shut the doors to my job at a health club and I DO NOT get paid while all this is going on. Yet they offer free WiFi to new customers? What about the middle class that is losing jobs and can’t pay bills.
Not having home internet access is a huge concern in areas where schools have closed for families that can’t afford it. I say BRAVO!
I agree!!
I hope Comcast will feel the pressure to be as generous and offer it up for the students in our area. I have students in my university that could really use this and if they can’t get the work done, they will not be able to graduate. Hope they feel “peer pressure” in a positive way and help out the community!
I agree with all of your comments
We have spectrum and pay sooooooo much money. However we have all the premiums, WiFi turbo, and phone. It’s still a pretty penny though. I do wish they would give a discount to it’s current customers especially since we’ve been with them for years. Our school district is one that extended spring break as well.
We pay $220/mo for cable & internet. No premium channels, no dvr, nothing extra. Only service available here or we’d switch in a heartbeat.
We have spectrum, and it’s great! I would say the same thing about AT&T. If you haven’t revamped your utilities in more than 2 years, you need to find a utility concierge to help you save. You should also do that with insurance too. We only do internet then buy our channels that we watch and save a ton! I know some of you don’t have a lot of choice when it comes to utilities and that stinks.
We have Spectrum & no complaints but yes a discount would be nice for us as well. All the additional educational freebies places are giving out right now are great, but also a slap in the face to those of us who actually homeschool. If your kid is out of school for 2 weeks (or even the rest of school year, it’s already mid-March), they would survive just fine without all this stuff. No shade here for ppl whose kids are suddenly off & they have no childcare etc, that sucks. Annoyed by ppl who able to be at home with kids & just complaining about having them full-time now, and calling themselves homeschoolers.🙄
Why do you feel entitled to a discount when your “school” is running as normal? 🙄Schools around the country are moving to online classes when people were signed up to go and attend class at a physical school. They obviously need internet for that
Many, many places are not doing anything online, thus no need for internet or any of this. Most so far only have one week beyond their regular spring break, I think they’ll make it.
That doesn’t answer my question. Entitlement is a big problem in this country. Be part of the solution and not the problem. Not everything will always be for everyone. Be happy for those that are getting a freebie, be thankful you can afford to pay your bill and move on.
Comcast is doing a similar offer for low income families called Internet Essentials. https://www.internetessentials.com/covid19
Thanks, we are working on getting that one up!
Although I think this is great I do see people’s concerns with it being available for non customers. A lot of families will be having hardships due to being out of work for this time period which is going to make paying the cable bill pretty hard. Some sort of program for them too (whether it’s a deferred bill or a discount) would be great.
Exactly but spectrum does not care one bit about their current customers…only about getting new ones. They know they will get customers out of this promotion…
i cannot believe our spectrum bill is 200.00 with constant problems. yet i have kids at home from college that need to use the internet but no financial break is given to your loyal customers!!! we are paying $66 and get half the speed; when others get it for free. what a rip off! as soon as i can i will find another providers
also, whats even more disgusting, spectrum knows that verizon will not install internet at this time so we are stuck
If i read that correctly it said they would not terminate service to residential customers due to inability to pay, well they lied as mine was shut off this morning for non payment and i have 2 children who can’t go to school and have to rely on wifi to do their work
I believe you still need to call if you can’t pay the bill and let them know. Have you tried calling them?
