Do these newer Thomas trains fot the old wood tracks? We have tons of the older version – I can’t tell but by the pic the trains look narrower. Anyone have experience with them?
I never buy the tracks now because they connect differently. But you can buy connectors for the tracks, if that helps!
Thank you! I thought so by the picture And a friend told me she thought the engines were smaller but I wasn’t sure
We have both new and old wood tracks. The new ones come with little connectors. They fit together fine w the connectors, and old (wood) trains are the same as the new wood trains. I think the plastic tracks are diff though.
My understanding is that the Take n Play (what is now called minis) are smaller and do not fit to old Take n Play tracks. The wooden trains are also smaller? I can say the the new Trackmaster engines still fit the old Trackmaster tracks.
Reading the reviews and Q and A, it appears the wooden trains are still the standard size as they fit Brio tracks. I have gotten Brio tracks recently and can say they connect with my old Thomas and Kidcraft tracks. So the wooden trains and tracks appear to me to be the same. It is the Trackmaster and Minis that are not the same. I think this change happened a few years after Thomas was acquired from TOMY by Fisher Price…when we got the Trackmaster Superstation, the old Trackmaster trains fit but the tracks did not connect. The mini train that arrived with the superstation clearly wouldn’t fit the take n play track, so the mini tracks are probably different as well.
The wooden tracks are the same size for the new Wood line and the old Wooden Railway (discontinued a free years ago, usually found on eBay, Mercari, etc and not in stores). Wood has male/female notches on BOTH ends so it doesn’t matter which way you put the track. Wooden Railway (usually) has male on one end and female on the other. There should be plastic adapters in the new Wood sets to make them compatible with Wooden Railway, but it only comes with a couple so that means you have to put all the Wood tracks together and all the Wooden Railway together, you can’t alternate when building unless you have tons of adapters. The trains are the same size and work on either track – the first release of Wood had more plain wood showing. They redid them and now they look more like the old Wooden Railway style with fully painted trains/trucks. Be aware that the all the engines are the same size for Wood unlike the WR where the bigger engines (Gordon, Emily, Edward, etc) were actually bigger and had more wheels. All hook together with magnets. Minis are completely different plastic trains and they are literally mini. Usually they come in blind bags/boxes. There are a few size specific sets to run them on. They hook together with little plastic parts. Trackmaster are the plastic bigger trains and sets (comparable to Wood and WR size). Usually they have motorized engines and are easy to find in stores. I think they connect with plastic pieces. Take N Plays were smaller than Trackmaster but bigger than the Minis. I think they have been phased out and connected with magnets. As far as I know, there are 2 sets that should run ALL the trains – the Super Station and Super Cruiser. We prefer the sturdy, old Wooden Railway, but they are becoming increasingly more difficult to find, especially in new or like new condition. I hope this helps someone!
