Holiday returns just got easier at Walmart!

Sometimes the downside of the season of giving is the fact that it is immediately followed by the season of returns! To make it more Covid-friendly and potentially prevent people from flocking to the store to exchange gifts after Christmas, Walmart has been busy making changes to their return policy.

If you have a gift that was shipped and sold by Walmart.com, you now have the luxury of having your item picked up right from your home by utilizing their new Carrier Pickup by FedEx! It’s totally free, easy peasy if you have a printer, and looks like this:

  • Start a return at Walmart.com or in the Walmart app
  • Select the item you want to return
  • Choose your FedEx pickup and appointment date
  • Pack up your item, print and attach your shipping label, and wait for pickup!

Here’s the scoop for folks without a printer…

No printer? No problem! They thought of that too! You can still skip the hustle and bustle at your busy local Walmart by following the steps above, but instead, you can opt to “Drop off at FedEx” as your return method. You will be given a QR code that can be scanned right from your phone by the FedEx store. They can then print a label and ship your package for you.

In-store returns will be easier too…

You may be wondering what to do for purchases that were made in-store or online from a third party vendor. Walmart has also made adjustments allowing for easier in-store returns that are also more aligned with social distancing protocols.

Regardless of the purchase method, you can start the return process for ALL purchases using Walmart.com or the Walmart app. Even those without a Walmart account can just head to walmart.com/startreturn to speed things up. Plus, alternate areas devoted to making returns will be available at many stores. Just what you need to get in and out of the store faster!

Get your money back within a day or two…

Even better, you can also expect to get your money back faster too! For many online returns, refunds may be credited back to the original payment account in as little as a day and potentially within the same day for in-store returns.

With all of these new updates, it’s clear that Walmart is doing its part to make adjustments that will make the hassle of returning gifts as quick and as safe as they can.

    Say whaaaaaaaat??!!

I’ve used the online return option a few times and 25% of the time they’ve refunded me and told me to keep or donate the item. It seems to be random and not based on dollar amount … tshirt, board game, pajama top, jeans …

    • Irene (Hip Sidekick)

We’re so glad to hear about your experience, 4boysohmy! Thanks for sharing that with us!

    • Rebecca

      Same!!!

    • Animity

Goes to show you how much money they make and how much stuff we all have.

I’ve had the same experience with returning items. I bought my son a couple Spanish/English dictionaries that were damaged a little in shipping. They gave me a full refund and asked for me to donate the items. His Spanish teacher was very happy to get them.

I returned a pair of defective jeans by mail before thanksgiving and I haven’t gotten my money back and I’m getting the runaround from customer service agents since early December. Another pair I returned the same day was refunded on Dec 3rd. It’s nice that they pick up packages now – i had to drive to the next town to drop mine off – I just wish they had some plan if a return gets lost beyond. “Wait 5 more business days”

Where’s the link to schedule a FedEx pickup and appointment? I started an online return a few days ago and printed the label.

I will still go back to the store. I’ve had problems every time I’ve had to do online/mail returns. No more. Have to contact 2 to 3 times to get refunds, not canceling orders that are out of stock correctly, not sending the correct pack number of items and not believing me, etc..

I actually initiated a return tonight due to the item being damaged. I chose return by USPS, and it printed USPS on the label. However, when I click on Order Details where I will check the status of my return, it states to return to FedEx by the end of January. I am confused now.

    • Aundrea

Check and see if the label says “smart post”. Those labels can go to both usps & fedex.

      • Penny

Oh, thank you, it does. So can I hand it to my FedEx driver instead of going into the post office? I am trying to stay safe and limit all exposure during this time.

  7. Dee

Off topic. My Walmart had artificial Christmas trees for 50% off taken at the register.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

      SWEET! Thanks, Dee!

  8. Briana

Can return via fedex work for in store purchase items?

    • Katie

      Doubt it

  9. Gramma C

I might’ve actually done some shopping for Christmas from them had a known this I hate going into Walmart so I don’t wanna buy anything in case I have to return it.

    • Irene (Hip Sidekick)

So glad we’re getting the word out since I bet other readers feel the same way, Gramma C! Thank you for your feedback!

  10. Katie

Thanks for this option. There is no Walmart close to me and I did order an online item that I need to return!

  11. Tricia

I don’t see that option. I only have return to store, return by mail and FedEx drop-off. Is the return by mail it? Just says print a label and sent it but doesn’t say they pick it up 🤔

    • Dawn

Wondering the same thing. Those are my only options too. The only print from home option was USPS. Will FedEx pick it up?

      • Tricia

        I guess nobody knows 🤷‍♀️

      • Gabrielle McGuire

Does the label say smart post? Can be shipped by FedEx or USPS.

  12. Juliee

Thank you! This is so timely! We bought a gift through Walmart.com that took too long to arrive and since we bought a different gift, no longer need. Our Walmart just shut down at 2:00 yesterday, won’t open until tomorrow morning so a “3rd party company can perform a deep clean” 😬 If Walmart voluntarily shuts down two days before Christmas you KNOW there’s got to be a reason! The rumor mill around here says there’s 25+ positive cases among employees 😬😬😬 Needless to say I’m not in a hurry to go stand in the return line, so this return option is great! I just hope my item qualifies, I’m not sure it was sold by Walmart. Fingers crossed!

    • TonyaPrz

Same thing at my Walmart. I drove by and the parking lot was packed! Of course people were walking up not realizing that they were closed.

    • Lmsars12

Oh goodness, where do you all live? Prayers for everyone affected.

  13. Gabrielle McGuire

Got a gift from Walmart without receipt! Can I return it that way?

  14. Nicole

I purchased a recliner on line with my Walmart card it stopped working a week later. I am disabled so that was my delivery reason. Now they want me buy a box and pack it up? Can someone please help with this question.

  15. Nicole

Can’t repack this huge recliner for fed ex to pick up. It’s not working so how do I get it to the store?

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hi there! You could call in to your location to see if they have any additional details on how that might work for you. Hoping they can help!

  16. Nicole

    Thank you.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

      You’re welcome!

  17. Nicole

Thank you but this is a recliner a really big item and I can’t put it a box or move it all around. If it was small I could find a way to box it back up and place the label.
