Calling all gamers! 📣

Fortnite and Rocket League players can receive up to $50 or in-game credits from a class-action lawsuit that resulted in a $26.5 million settlement from Epic Games. This lawsuit alleged that Epic Games violated consumer protection laws, negligently misrepresented the value of in-game purchases, and prevented minors from exercising contractual disaffirmation rights.

Eligible Class Members include anyone in the United States who had a Fortnite or Rocket League account that they used to purchase or exchange in-game virtual currency for an in-game benefit between July 1, 2015, and February 25, 2021. Epic Games will automatically deposit 1,000 V-Bucks (for Fortnite players) or 1,000 Rocket League Credits into the accounts of U.S. players who purchased a random-item loot box between these dates.

In addition to those credits, players who believe they were harmed by their in-game Fortnite or Rocket League purchases and meet certain criteria may also file a claim of up to $50 cash or 13,500 Fortnite V-Bucks or Rocket League credits. Such harm may include consumer fraud, breach of contract, or other damages, and documentation must be provided to support your claim.

Consumers may also file a claim for the partial refund of a real-money purchase of virtual currency or other in-game items if a minor made the purchase with their own money without parental permission. Anyone submitting a claim for a partial refund does not need to demonstrate additional harm or damages, but must disclose the Epic Games accounts opened by the minor.

The deadline for consumers to object to or exclude themselves from this settlement is April 12, 2021. The deadline to file a claim is April 26, 2021. For more information on how to submit a claim, head on over here to view the instructions page of the class action lawsuit settlement site.

I checked into this and it’s more documentation than I have the energy to muster up. We did receive the 1000 v bucks though.

Very true, but both my accounts received a credit. I’m just glad there is no action to take, gets automatically added. Basically, in lieu of admitting guilt, a payout

      • isabel

How did you do it to receive the credit?

        • fabfitmom

Automatically showed up via 1000 vbucks on the account

So I am more than slightly embarrassed to admit this but both of my boys have accounts and have been obsessed with this stupid game for so long. It did take me a while to go through and screenshot all of the transactions and enter each one into the claim form, but OMG I added them all up and they have spent $657.66 on that game in the last two years. Sometimes they would be to the point of crying and freaking out to buy some ‘skin’ or something because at 7pm it was going to be gone out of the item shop. I am appalled that they are only offering $50.00 payments back knowing how they manipulated these kids. Nothing that you can buy affects your gameplay AT ALL nor your odds… insane.. I’ll take my $50.00 but geez.

Marketing geniuses. Most expensive “free” game ever.

      • tracey

Roblox too, for expensive “free” game!

These kids have parents that could easily say, no. Even if the purchases made a difference on the gameplay, some adult has to approve the charges or load more money into their kids account. Don’t blame the company for appealing to the her kids, that’s literally their jobs. Blame the parents for being asleep at the wheel.

Wow, that’s a little harsh. I assume you typed that unhelpful snark from your holier-than-thou off-the-grid solar non-computer. “Asleep at the wheel” is how one might describe your civility.

These companies (ie EA, Epic, Activision) make their money hoping parents of these kids don’t pay attention to what their kids do when they’re online. The lawsuit is frivolous as they state in multiple areas that buying these items provides no competitive advantage. Parents forgot how to parent and let companies like these dictate what they think their kids need bc that’s what their “friends” have and don’t want to be left out. Yes I play these games occasionally and I run into kids daily talking about suicide, neglect, and meeting new people online to be their friends. Get out and play something w your kids and stop letting big businesses like these run your kids lives!!

Yes! I’ve had the same issue with my son. I hate this game because of how they manipulate these kids to just keep buying more stuff.

Fortnite is nothing but a money rackett, over the past year, my son spent over $400 on Vbucks, finally he is outgrowing it. Thankfully

I guess we’re weird…I spent the $8 or so last summer so my kid would have enough to get the battle pass (I think it was Marvel at the time, that’s why he wanted it), with him knowing that would be all we spent on the game, ever. If they save their V-bucks they earn or get from the first pass, you’ll never have to buy another, can continue to get it each season. Also never spent a dime on Roblox…2 kids with zero complaining.

What upset me was my son begged me for this game Rocket League so I bought it for him for his birthday from Best Buy. Both my boys loved it and we could all play as a family (4 people) on his one switch with extra controllers. However about a month or 2 later they decide to make it a “free” game which we purchased an actual game card, but that didn’t matter. They gave us no credits or perks from actually purchasing the game. But what bothered me most is they changed the game so we could no longer play multi players without additions devices/accounts (even with the original game card). Apparently people buying the game for $20-50 was not enough money. This made me not only upset about the company but I no longer want to purchase other games for the switch if they can just change it a month after purchasing, what is the point of buying the card if it offers no security and does not allow play when offline?

My 10 year-old son brought this settlement to my attention and we discussed making a claim but decided against it due to him having to close his account if he made a claim. He decided that he knew he was spending real money and that it was not worth it to lose his account to get money refunded to him.

“If the Claimant (i) was a minor at the time they used real money to purchase V-Bucks or Credits from Epic Games or a third party, or made other real money purchases from Epic Games in connection with their play of Fortnite or Rocket League; (ii) made these real money purchases with their own money (not a parent’s money or using a parents credit card); (iii) did so without permission from a parent or guardian; and (iv) wish to obtain refunds for those purchases, they may receive a refund for one-third (1/3) of the total purchase amounts at issue or $50.00, whichever is less.

Contractual disaffirmation, as a matter of law, must be total. For this reason, by making this claim, the Claimant must agree to the closure of all Epic Games accounts that you/they opened while you/they were a minor. If the Claimant is a minor, a parent/guardian will be able to open a new account and allow the Claimant to play on it, but the Claimant cannot open a new account for themselves until they are an adult. If the Claimant is now an adult, they may open a new account themselves.”

    • Eva

I filed a claim and chose the option where I did not have to close my son’s account.

When can we expect to see the v-bucks on the account. I see some people have received there’s but my son has not got his yet.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hi there! I don’t see details on the timing of that. Maybe keep checking back. Hoping they pop up soon!
