car freshener in vent

Have an extra car air freshener?

Car air fresheners are the most convenient way to have your car smelling the way it did when you first bought it, but have you ever thought about using those vent sticks inside your home instead? That’s what this week’s Happy Friday reader, Teresa, did!

All you have to do is place your air fresheners on your home’s furnace vent, and you’ve got yourself air quality that smells golden!

My frugal tip on keeping your rooms smelling fresh is to clip a Febreze Car air freshener in your room’s furnace vent. When your furnace comes on, the scent fills the room!

All those that have a fake Christmas tree, scents come in fresh-cut pine and forest scents! Costco recently had a 5-pack coupon for $6.99!

Teresa, this is such a clever hack! I loved how she mentions using Christmas-y scents during this time of year. As seasons change, you can switch up the scents you use to reflect the time of year! 😍

Sure, we all love candles, but this would be an excellent alternative to fill your home with yummy scents for anyone who has little ones or clumsy animals that you want to keep away from open flames and hot wax. Thanks for sharing this useful tip with the Hip2Save community!

I really hate being “that person” who chimes in with something negative, but whelp here I am I suppose! Lol. Nice scents are all well and good, but there are other options (and definitely more attractive options) besides candles, wax, and… air fresheners. I’d consider those before sticking a bunch of car air fresheners all over the place, but that’s just me, personally. I don’t think the car air fresheners look very appealing at all. Just please, please don’t do this to cover up any odors in your home. I’ve come across far too many people who think a candle or an air freshener will solve what’s clearly an underlying problem and now their house just smells like pine scented rotten eggs. ☹️ And of course you can’t say anything because that would be so hurtful. Maybe Hip2Save could do an article on common sources of home stankiness with some ways to clean and eliminate them? Possibly with some deals for products to help? That way when people want to use nice scents it’s because they want to, not as a cover up! 🙂

Thanks for the request and suggestion, Melissa! 🤗I’ll be sure to pass this along to the team!

I would also like to add to Melissa’s comment that if you’re using this approach because of pets you may want to reconsider as most of these air fresheners are toxic to animals.

      • Shannon

Yes and also not good for people either. I really like the article h2s posted around Christmas one year about boiling water with fruits and spices. That’s non toxic and works great!!

I do this with essential oils on a diffuser wick (or a cotton ball would probably work). If you are looking for a more natural solution it works great. I am able to tuck the diffuser wick on the inside of the air vent so they are not visible.

Putting safe essential oils on your air filters is a great option, too! No clips for animals to possibly get to.

I think it’s a great idea. I don’t use candles because of pets in the home, so I’m always open to ideas. Thanks, Hip2Save, for posting ideas and letting us pick one that we like.

You’re very welcome, Judi! Glad you’re loving the ideas and tips! Thanks so much for the sweet feedback! 🥰🤗

I actually tried this in the bathroom but bc the vent emits air constantly, the freshener lasted just a few days, and because the bathroom is so large compared to a car, there isn’t much scent in the air.

I really hate to be the bearer of bad news, but not only have I attempted to use car vent Clips on air vents and failed…
Also, if you Google it, MULTIPLE Sites (including Febreze themselves) say that Car Vent Clips will NOT work (properly if at all) when clipped onto household air vents…
But, that’s just from what I’ve come across..
