These are so much fun! Both of my children (ages 11 and 4) enjoy playing with these. One thing we do differently is soak the gel balls in a separate container and then using a funnel we load the canisters. One charge lasts days. Plus, these are really easy to use.

Hey Colleen. I work as a PA and these water bead toys are super unsafe. If little ones get a hold of the beads and eat them they swell in the intestines and can cause death. A lot of medical people are trying to get them banned. Can you please remove this post? Thanks 😊!!

Orbeez, also known as water beads or water jellies, are environmentally friendly because they are 100% biodegradable
Yeah, “biodegradable”, but look up the rates of degradation for sodium polyacrylate in the soil. It’d take about 200 years for half of the orbeez material to decompose. Though technically biodegradable, I wouldn’t consider that time frame to be practically biodegradable enough to be shooting them all over yards, parks, etc. And what happens when they get in ponds, streams, lakes, drains, and sewers?
Well my research on these show they take 1-10 years to decompose fully not 200 years. and its the same materials in disposable diapers that are also everywhere! You’re right though BAN BAN BAN because this chemical compound was used for recreation and not in your babies diaper, or used for golf courses and gardens to help retain water. but as soon as someone uses it for FUN the BAN word must be used!
Depending on several external factors like weather, temperature and moisture, hydrated Orbeez remain in good condition for a few days to months for recreational activities but may take from a few years to a decade to biodegrade in the soil. Experts opine the period could be 1-10 years, depending on the above factors. If you use these water beads in a lawn or garden, you should know that they will remain there for one or half-decade.
I’d love to see your sources, because everything I’m seeing says they take decades (the same for disposable diapers—up to 500 years some of them!) I do recognize that this is an inherent difficulty with internet “research”. We’re all looking at different sources and likely most of them aren’t well-regulated, cross-examined or peer-reviewed.
Seriously this ban thing is getting out of control. Some of us don’t have small children and lets look at stats. There has been 1 Death from orbeez in the past 5 years. Pennies and other objects make up the other 1499 deaths. We cant just ban everything tiny. Be responsible with small objects and small children irregardless of the item! These Gel blasters are lots of fun and cheap entertainment for my children.
According to a 2016 article, around 1,500 children die each year from foreign body ingestion.
According to Consumer Reports, at least one child has died in the US after consuming or putting Orbeez water beads in their ears or noses.
Orbeez isnt the issue quit trying to ban everything!!

At one point I did some research on this because someone brought bucket loads of water beads to the local park and left them all over the slides, under and over the play equipment, the grass, the toddlers play area and the area popular with dog walkers. I have no idea what brand since apparently there are a lot. Orbeez does have the most information on its site. 10 years for degradation was what I remember. Fish and aquatic life are apparently known to be killed by water beads. I could find no information on pets. I did find one account of one child being terribly injured with severe intestinal damage after multiple operations over a 3 month period. The neighbors got together and scoured the park and cleaned them up as best they could. It was a real ruckus with neighbors who thought they were harmless vs neighbors who were horrified. For the sake of peace with your neighbors and overall safety keep them at home and not the park is my advice.
