Homemade Hamburger Helper: The Nostalgic Weeknight Dinner We Still Love
Here’s a hearty yet simple Hamburger Helper recipe that’s better than the boxed version we all had and loved for dinner.

Put this easy Hamburger Helper recipe on the menu this week.
It has all the creamy, cheesy, comforting flavors you remember, but it’s made with simple pantry ingredients and comes together in just one skillet. That means less cleanup, no mystery ingredients, and a hearty dinner the whole family will love.
This recipe is perfect for busy weeknights when you need something filling, affordable, and kid-approved. The tender pasta shells soak up a rich beefy tomato sauce, while plenty of cheddar cheese creates that classic creamy finish everyone loves.
Make this meal higher in protein! Here’s how:

One of my favorite things about this homemade Hamburger Helper recipe is how easy it is to boost the protein content with a few simple swaps. Instead of traditional pasta, I used Goodles noodles, which contain more protein and fiber than regular pasta while still cooking up tender and delicious.
I also swapped regular beef broth for bone broth. Bone broth adds additional protein and collagen while creating an even richer, heartier flavor in the sauce. These small changes help transform a comfort food classic into a more filling, protein-packed meal.
Other easy protein upgrades include using lean ground turkey or ground chicken, or stirring in cottage cheese with the cheddar. These simple swaps can help keep everyone fuller longer while still delivering that creamy, cheesy comfort-food experience.

Ingredients
- one small yellow onion, chopped
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 6 ounce can tomato sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 2 cups beef brone broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon salt & pepper
- 8 ounce dried pasta shells
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 1/2 cup shredded shark cheese
Directions
1
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onion, and crumble the ground beef. Cook until the beef is browned and the onion is softened, about 5-7 minutes. Add in the minced garlic in the last few minutes. Drain excess grease if needed.
2
Add the tomato sauce, garlic powder, paprika, bone broth, Worcestershire Sauce, pasta shells, heavy cream, salt, & pepper. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low. Cover and simmer for 12-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed.
3
Stir in the shredded sharp cheddar cheese. Continue stirring until the cheese is melted and the sauce becomes creamy. Remove from heat and let sit for 2-3 minutes to thicken before serving.
Extra tips for making this healthy hamburger helper:
- For a little kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes.
- Top with sour cream for serving for an extra creamy experience.
- Swap the sharp cheddar for pepper jack or American cheese for a different flavor profile.
- Add diced bell peppers, mushrooms, or spinach for extra veggies.
- If the mixture becomes too thick, stir in a splash of additional beef broth
- . What to serve with Hamburger Helper? Consider making a big green salad with lots of veggies, or opt for a convenient salad kit. It also pairs well with roasted broccoli, garlic bread, or green beans.
