Guess where this picture was taken?! Well, if you’re thinkin’ outside Walmart, you’re correct!

Reader, Julie, emailed with this awesome picture and had this to say:

“I walked into Walmart yesterday and they had a signs on their landscape stating “We’ll match any ad” and “We will honor any coupon” ! Plus, once I got inside they had a huge sign (almost as tall as me and I’m 5′7) that said the same thing. I think the letters worked!!! Hip2Saver’s unite!!”

I also received this email from reader, Christie:

“I think your Walmart emails made a difference. Yesterday I went to walmart to get some groceries and to my surprise I saw a few huge signs inside the store that said: We price match any competitor Prices and Coupons! *some restrictions apply – The signs were so big and a few placed around the store you couldn’t miss them! Plus, on the checkout lane numbers that light up when a cashier is open were signs that said: “coupon specialist” in English and Spanish!”

What do you all think?! Do you think the emails we sent are starting to make a difference?

I love it – makes me hopeful for next time I go into mine. I hate shopping at Walmart b/c they are so horrible with coupons!

  2. Whitney S.

I was wondering if any one had Wal-Marts coupon policy?

    • fran

On the blue banner that Collin had going down the right side of the page, scroll to the bottom, you will see “Store Guides”…after you click that, she has a link to their coupon policy.

      • Whitney S.

Thank you soo much. The Wal-Mart where I live told me last week that they only take internet coupons with yellow dots on them!

        • Suzanne

Huh? Yellow dots? Crazy! I don’t live near a Walmart – kinda grateful b/c everyone seems to have problems couponing there. Hope things start looking up for you and everyone else shopping at Walmart! Great to see them respond to customer input!

  3. Julie

Wow!!! that is truly amazing!!! Great job.

  4. Corina

I went last night to my local store and no signs were there. BUT the cashier did not give me grief about using internet coupons. Yay!

  5. Jill

I honestly don’t think the emails made a difference……those signs were up all over my Walmart as well but my store has always been coupon friendly. Plus, we recently had a Meijer open up across the street – thus them putting up more signs for more business IMO.

  6. Valarie

    Goosebumps. It gives me goosebumps.

  7. Angela

No signs in Knoxville, Iowa and no change in attitiude. For some reason our Walmart defines doubling a coupon as using more than one of the same coupon. For example if I buy two cans of corn and have a coupon for each can I am unable to use both coupons if the coupon says “Do not double”. I am not sure how they determined this is what the mfg meant by doubling?? Hopefully the signes and attitude change are just slow to come!!!

    • Katie

I have to wonder if they would be a little more flexible in this policy if you said that you would like to do a separate transaction for each item you have a coupon for…. I might do this if you have the time, just do show them their knuckleheaded policy is not very efficient.

  8. steph

There were NO signs of improvement in New Hampshire….. I was there yesterday with an internet coupon – the cashier 1st rolled her eyes at me. When she tried to scan the coupon she wasnt’t even over the scan bar on the coupon. Next she went for management who just yelled accross the store ” IF IT DOESN’T SCAN WE DON’T TAKE THEM!!!” I simply took my stack of coupons back and walked out!!! VERY FRUSTRATING!!!!!

I absolutely hate going to Wal-Mart with coupons. I’m not that fond of WM anyway, but it seems everytime I go there is an issue, and with coupons it is really a nightmare. A couple of weeks ago I was going to price match Dollar General’s deo. price on Suave and the cashier was going to do it, then a manager said no we only price match the grocery stores, which is not true, but it is not even worth it, then none of my coupons would scan so she would not take them…………until she cleaned her register scanner, and then they all scanned. I hate going in there.

With as many people that are couponing nowadays, all cashiers should/need to be educated about coupons. That should be part of their cashier training. I had a Walgreens cashier say to me, we don’t take printed coupons. I told him, “Yes, you do. It’s in your policy. Call the manager.” She scrutinized the printed coupon and said, “Yes, we’ll take it. It has coupons.com printed on it.” And then told me they’ve received a lot of bad coupons. So, he scanned all of them. And, good thing I looked at my receipt, he charged me for all of the bags Life Savers I bought, when they were BOGO. He had to take off half of them. 🙂 Thanks to H2S, I’m loving couponing and learning more and more about saving money.

I have searched the “Tips” section and haven’t found how to use a BOGO coupon with a BOGO sale. Any help or direction would be appreciated. TIA!

Keep up the good for Collin!

    • Gen

Meant to say, Thanks for all you do Collin!

I still have this “fear” of Walmart, and its gonna take a long time for me to even try using coupons there- My walmart in Jax,Fla is SOOO bad. Its dirty, lines are so long, only a few grouchy cashiers on at a time… No thanks…..Ill stick to Publix, where shopping is truly a joy 🙂

    • Gery

Hi I am in Miami Fl and its the same here with Walmart. I dont even bother going there. And dito to Publix. I totally LOVE my Publix they make sure I am happy and that I have found EVERYTHING that I came to buy…

    • Emily

Maria – Which Walmart do you shop at? I’m also in Jax and have had loads of trouble with the one off of Tredinick Parkway.

    • Kristin

Okay, you people with Publix need to quit rubbing the rest of our noses in it! 😀 Seriously, I would love to have a Publix, but here in Texas HEB is King – and don’t get me started on their coupon policy. Enjoy your Publix!!!!!

  12. LindaB

I usually go to my local Walmart for extra copies of All You. I take 5 or 6 of only my ‘best deal’ Q’s with me then check out through the Garden Center. (Don’t want to get my cashier flustered!) So far I haven’t had a problem checking out through our Garden Center registers. Seems like the cashiers out there are friendlier and more experienced.

  13. Cherilyn

Hmmmm… I’m always jealous of the RiteAid coupon deals because we don’t have one in Austin. I wonder if RiteAid is a “competitor” of Wal-Mart?

    • Kristin

I’m always jealous too. I’m also in Austin and love my Wags, but would love to score some of the killer Rite Aid deals that Collin posts!

  14. Jennifer G.

does that mean target coupons can go to walmart?

  15. chris

Many people have boycotted Wal-Mart because of their unethical business practices and the third world treatment of their employees. I know this site is about couponing and saving money but the bottom line is that price rollback is made possible by making all employees part time, paying minimum wage with no affordable health care benefits. Wal-Mart costs this nation millions of dollars in employee welfare and health care that we the people pay for eventually. Also, everything sold in Wal-Mart is made in China which takes American dollars out of our economic pool and shuts down American manufacturing jobs. Wal-Mart has many shady business practices, I could go on forever. Maybe since the coupon letter writing campaign was so successful, the readers should start campaigning for some social responsibility. Make a difference where it counts.

    • Annette

Agree with all of your statements!!! Trust me, I love to save money, but sometimes I feel that Walmart is all that is bad in this world!!

    • Joy

Actually, not everything in Walmart is made in China. I have found several things made in USA there. Most of the Pyrex dishes and Nordicware pans are made in USA. I have bought large slotted kitchen spoons and cutting boards under the Walmart brand name that are made in USA. My boys’ school Valentine’s cards came from there and they were made in USA. Actually, I try to buy made in USA (or Canada) when I can and will even pay a little extra $ to do so even at Walmart. The only exception is clothes. It is very hard to find made in USA clothing not just at Walmart, but everywhere.

Plus, lots of the food, health and beauty stuff is made in USA.

Actually, I find more stuff made in China vs. made in USA at Target.

Not defending Walmart’s business practices but to say all stuff at Walmart is made in China is a broad generalization.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

WalMart treats their employees terribly. I worked there for a WEEK this past holiday season before I just couldn’t take it. I’d go in the break room and all you would here are long-term employees getting screwed over. My parents have both been at a different WM 15+ years and they are the only ones at their store that have been there that long – when the recession hit, they looked for every possible little reason to fire the old-timers because they can hire three part-timers for the cost of full-time oldies like my parents. One of my mom’s friends was fired because she was with her daughter at a U-Scan and the daughter forgot to scan something. Realized it before they left the store, went to go ring it up, and the woman got fired her next work day because she should have known better!!!! Only reason my parents have made it is because they work third shift.

  16. kelly

I posted earlier about my horrible coupon experience last night. Today I called & talked to the manager and she was very nice and agreed on every point that I made about walmart’s coupon policy. 🙂 well, I know I was right because I have done my research, learned from Collin how it’s done, and am not trying to pull any scams!! I am just trying to be as frugal as possible and hopefully that will not mean a 20 minute check-out process in the future!! thanks Colin for being an ambassador for all of us! The manager said she would definitely help educate that particular cashier & manager who was on duty!!

  17. Rita

    AWESOME : )

  18. Jennifer

After hearing all the bad comments about Wal-mart- who actually shops there?! Its rare for me to step into one! I agree with the comments of how horrile they are and they could care less if you shopped with them or not. I love my Publix where they are friendly and helpful and want my business!!!!!

  19. Renee

I normally don’t use coupons at Walmart simply because I concentrate on Wags and CVS, but I went to use the Littlest Pet Shop B1G1 coupons. Coupon showdown!! The cashier didn’t know, and went to ask, which is fine. The guy that came back with her first said, we don’t take coupons for free products. I told him you might not take free product ones, but yes, you do take ones that are B1G1 free. Then he said we can’t take these, they’re copied. (2 were color, 2 were bw – I had printed them off 2 computers) I told him no they weren’t copied, I printed them in bw to save color ink and proceeded to point out to him that all 4 had different bar codes and if they were copied they wouldn’t. He snottily then said, well if they don’t scan, we won’t take them. The did in fact scan, and prompted for the amount. I should’ve gotten his name. I felt really bad for the cashier..it wasn’t her fault this guy was a jerk. I even made sure as I was picking them out that they fell into the 4 specific codes listed on the coupon, so it’s not like I was trying to pull one over on anyone. Made me so mad to basically be called a crook! Now I know firsthand how the rest of you feel about WalMart!

  20. Stacy

Well I had a great coupon experience at WM the other night, so maybe! I laughed to myself when I left because 2 cashiers kept asking me where I find my deals. I mentioned your site to them and then thought, “Uh-oh, I wonder if they’ll feel blasted when they see all the WM complaints.” So, this is quite timely because if they actually log on, they’ll see the good report. 🙂

  21. Stacy

Wait, what does “honor any coupon” mean? Are they going to honor store coupons? Are they going to allow a store + a mfg coupon?

  22. Char

sadly, I can’t say the same for my Walmart (I like to call them HellMart). They refused my $10 off Alice in Wonderland Combopack coupon.
I’m boycotting Walmart until given a reason not to.

I’ll be taking my grocery business to my local store only and to target for household items.

    • Lynn

They also refused my $10 off Alice in Wonderland coupon, claiming it was “fake.” I wrote Disney Movie Rewards and told them that WalMart was calling their coupons fake. After I get their response, I’m sending it, as an attachment to my own letter, to WalMart’s CEO. Learn to distinguish real coupons!

  23. Renee

I just called and talked to the Asst Mgr about my experience this afternoon. She was very nice and said she had an idea of who it was I talked to. Said she was sorry and that she will talk to him and that they need to do some training.

  24. Emily H

IS this change in the coupon policy for ALL Wal-Mart stores? I went to the Wal-Mart site and read their coupon policy, but it did not specify.

  25. Ginger

Okay, look at that photo again…I’ve NEVER seen a Wal-Mart with grass in its parking lot! Maybe a tree with some mulch and cigarette butts all in the mulch, but certainly never that pretty green, neatly trimmed grass. Hmmm “Gucci Wal-Mart” lol

  26. muser

we’d make more of a difference if we collectively stopped shopping at Wal-Mart all together. 😉

  27. Laura

I’m glad it seems to be helping some people. None of the cashiers/managers at my local Wal-Mart end up giving you the same answers on the price matching guide lines. One tells you they take the ads from any paper that they sell – and a manager called me today and told me that’s not right and keeps making the area of which they will accept ads smaller and smaller. She said they will take the grocery store in the same town ad no problem – I’d hope so – but the grocery store doubles coupons up to $.50 and donates to my child’s school – so how does that really help me. I just which I could get a straight answer and corporate just will not get back to me.

  28. carla daggett

I went to my Walmart and I was told they would not honor any tops coupons or target in ad coupons. now what do I do?

  29. Wanda

They may be doing this as a test store or it may be slow in getting out. I did get all my coupons takenh on Friday but Customer serive manager had to help. Utah store.

  30. Stacey

YES!… ONE DOWN MANY STORES TO GO. NOW IF WE CAN JUST BUG WALMART ABOUT BRINGING BACK LAWAWAY WE WILL REALLY ROCK…

  31. brenda3

i email Walmart so they can clarify what Store Coupons are and here is their answer:

    Dear Brenda,

Thank you for your recent correspondence regarding the acceptance of coupons at Walmart. Our guidelines generally allow for the following types of coupons to be accepted:

    – manufacturer coupons (Cents Off)
    – free merchandise (or manufacturer’s Buy-One-Get-One-Free) coupons
    – store coupons (local competition)
    – internet coupons
    – soft drink container caps

A salaried manager may refuse to accept a coupon if it does not meet certain criteria.

Coupon guidelines and limits include but are not limited to the following:

Walmart only accepts coupons for merchandise we sell and only when presented at the time of purchase. Coupons should have an expiration date and be presented within the valid dates. Walmart will not accept expired coupons or double/triple coupons. Internet coupons should be legible and say “Manufacturer Coupon_ and there should be a valid remit address for the manufacturer and scannable bar code. Store Coupons must reflect a specific sale price or original price and must be available to all customers. For ‘Free’ merchandise coupons, customers will not receive cash back — the cashier will adjust the value of the coupon to the actual retail of the item at the time of sale. In addition, only one coupon per item is permitted and use of 40 or more coupons per transaction will require approval by a Customer Service Manager.

    Sincerely,
    Walmart Customer Care

  32. gloria

I was in Walmart, Land O’Lakes, Fl. on Fri. afternoon intending to use the Target $1.00 off coupon on Shout but to no avail. The checkout person said they do not accept competitors coupons from other stores and I informed her that they had before at other Walmarts I had been to. She then said she would call a manager if I wanted so I said yes and waited for a long time for him to come and when he finally showed up, was short, rude, and very abrupt and said absolutely NOT!!!! TARGET and PUBLIX her I come!!

  33. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Well, I tried to price match a Winn Dixie price last week and was told they “don’t price match deals that you need rewards cards for”. I don’t know if it’s true or not but i didn’t have time to argue so I just went to Winn Dixie for that sale price.

  34. Kathy

I just visited my local walmart and was unable to use my dollar off coupons from target. I even had them call the corprate office which stated they do not take store coupons that are $ off only coupons that state this item for x dollars.

  35. kalimiranda

Did not take all of mine even though the coupons clearly stated ‘manufactured CPN’. ERRR
