Does anyone out there know some little kid that just loves Angry Birds?? It seems that the ALL of them have an obsession with this fun phone game, right? Well, here’s how my children’s obsession manifested itself via the creation of our very own backyard version of the game. Though we didn’t plan on creating an Angry Bird game when we started, it seemed to just materialize…

This past weekend, we hosted a super-fun summer party for our kids and their friends. In trying to think of fun and budget-wise games for the party, I scoured my old Family Fun magazines for ideas. As I’m sure your readers know, Family Fun is a GREAT magazine, and I’m happy to report that my subscription was free thanks to a long ago post from Hip2save.

Anyway, in the magazine I stumbled across an old-fashioned ball tossing game whereby balls are used to knock over a pyramid of tin/steel cans. When I asked my sever yr old what she thought, she instantly said that it would be so much better if the game was like Angry Birds with the cans being pigs and the balls being birds. So, with a roll of green Frog Tape (painters tape that retails for approximately $8-10 for a HUGE roll) and some black and white Wet-n-Wild nail polish (which I got for FREE at Walgreens in June) we transformed tin cans (many of which I got from my neighbor) into little green pigs.

The kids enjoyed handing me the cans to tape up and they even got to help color on the eyes and noses. Using old tennis balls which we had on hand, I colored them with Sharpies (also free from last year’s back-to-school shopping) and created our Angry Birds. Overall, the making of the pigs was VERY easy and the total cost of the game was approximately $10, for the tape. However, I still have half a roll of tape left for future projects and the game we made will last for several more parties. Best of all, the kids LOVED the game.

We did something similar. We set up boxes of different sizes and placed cups and cans throughout the setup. On the cups and cans we put printout pictures of the pigs that my son colored. We used the Angry Bird plushes that my son has collected to knock them down.

this is *so* funny – yesterday was my husband’s company picnic, and one of the guys built a huge slingshot for the kids to play “real life angry birds” complete with pigs (green balls with drawn on faces)on different sized stacked cardboard boxes and birds (smaller blue, red and yellow balls with faces drawn on as well) – they LOVED it – and I was kidding that he’d have to start taking orders from all the dads there whose kids were gonna want one at home 😉

Awesome! Awesome! Awesome idea!!!! I love it! Last year I started a new tradition of a kids carnival party for my kiddos with homemade games…and if Kim doesn’t mind, I’ll be adding this idea to my line up! Just adorable!!!

Proof that you don’t have to sit in front of a computer screen or a TV to have fun. At the risk of sounding like an old fart: we used to do creative stuff like this when we were kids all the time. Seems kids nowadays just want to stay inside.

Love the idea! I can’t wait to try this at home for my kids! Thanks!!

I might modify this for my girls b-day party making the cans pirates (and my girls can throw princess decorated balls at them)

  17. Corine

We did this for my girls’ birthday party. Not angry bird themed but the kids (boys and girls alike) loved it.

What a great idea – sounds like an awesome project for me and the kids!

    Looks AWESOME!
Excuse the DUMB question, but do you use full or empty cans?
    Thanks!
