Thank you for posting this Collin. We want to buy a tent for 2 kids 2 adults, fellow hipsters, should I buy a 6 person tent, considering the bags, etc? Any recommendations out there? I am aware is very difficult to find something that is 100% waterproof, that is better to buy a tarp.
Also, we need a queen inflatable mattress, again, any recommendations? Thank you ladies (and guys)! 🙂
Hi Rebe! We have been camping for years and have come to realize when it says accommodates 4 it really means 2 and 6 means 4, etc. they calculate it based on you laying in their like sardines so I would definitely recommend a 6 person tent for the 4 of you. :). Also we bought an air mattress from Costco recently (it’s on coupon starting 6/12) and we love it!! My hubby is 6’3 250lbs and I am 5’3 105lbs and I don’t bounce all around or sink when we are on it together. It even has a headrest. It’s the best I’ve ever slept on for an air mattress.
Thank you Suzyq, Julie and Co Mama for taking the time to reply, very valuables comments! 🙂
We have a 6-person dome tent right now for two adults and two kids. It’s very tall in the middle which is great for my 6’4″ husband, but it just got to be too small for us with bags and two air mattresses (queen and twin.) I just ordered an 8-person tent and got it for $107 which is a STEAL for a Coleman. It’s got a rain fly and will keep you dry in a moderate rainfall. Also spraying the fly with a water repellant the first time will help. As far as air mattresses, we have several as well. We just got an off-brand double-thick mattress from Meijer on Black Friday, but we also have Coleman queen and twin sizes that are just single thickness. I feel between these three, they all seem about the same. I know there are really nice ones out there but you’ll pay quite a sum for them. If we are using them more than one night, we’ll just re-inflate them each night before bed and they do great. I hope this all helps…we are no camping experts by any means, but we do enjoy it a few times each summer.
We have had excellent luck at REI Garage Sales. I think most stores hold them the last Saturday of the month. We recently purchase a Kelty 6 person tent (awesome company + customer service) that retails for $260 for $90!
We have a 5 person tent for 2 adults and 3 kids. We have fit fine for years. We keep our gear nicely stacked in one corner and just have our sleeping bags touching each other. I think it is perfect for our family.
I can not comment on the tent. Though I’d be very interested in the answers you get. As to an inflatable queen mattress we recently bought the Serta Raised Bed with Never Flat Pump. We loved it! The most comfortable airbed we have ever slept on. However it does require that you plug it in all night. Not sure how well that would serve you if you were to take it camping.
Thanks Jenny! 🙂
Thank you!! I just ordered a $220 tent for my husband for Father’s day for only $107!!
Pretty sure we got the same one, Jenny! It’s a great deal! Hoping it arrives in time for Father’s Day! I’m sure my kids will make lots of memories with their dad on camping trips with this tent. Yay!!
Sorry! Meant to say Julie. ☺️
