Any reviews on that pencil sharpener? I can’t seem to find it online to check it out. Thanks.

    • Jaclyn

I would love to know that too…Bought an expensive one last year and its total crap!

    • Mo

I’ve had no problem with my sharpener.

    • Kassie

I have this sharpener and works okay. I still like the manual sharpeners but for the price and being an electric sharperner it works good.

    • Rebecca

I have a really tough time with this sharpener. I keep the batteries out, b/c it just runs on it’s own when they are in. also, it’s very testy on how hard/soft you push the pencil in. I thought it would be good for my kids to use when doing homework, but it just sits in the drawer.

  2. Sue

I have this stapler in our classroom. It has been used for about 9 months and it is still going. Not bad for $10.00

  3. Mary

We have that sharpener, save your money. My experience is you get what you pay for. Had an I sharp in the classroom that worked well. Personally I like the old fashioned hand crank which is on the workbench in the garage!

    • brandice

      Me too

  4. Susan

We have a staples sharpener that look similar but not exactly the same. It works great. Had it for a few years. You have to stop after 10 pencils and let it rest. You know if you’re doing the 48 sharpened pencils for the first day of school. I heard they have a lifetime warranty on their own brand products. Check into that.

  5. xirian

Anyone else’s school have the nerve to demand name brand items? Paper is paper, its like they own stock in the companies or something.

    • Heather

Yep…this school system we are in spells out the brand to buy and even says to stay away from certain brands, that are named, due to “poor quality”.

    • Candace Castillo

We do recommend #2 pencils and Crayola crayons. The decorative pencils are so cute, but not friends with pencil sharpeners. Rose Art crayons do not last like Crayola crayons.

      • Dawn

Candace, love your thoughts… You can tell you’re a teacher too, because you stated that the decorative pencils are not friends with the sharpener. ☺️ Some people and their posts here today are bringing me down with their negatively. I’m just excited about the coming Back to School deals. Thanks H2S!

    • ish

The brand school supplies go on sale for back to school for very cheap too, sometimes even the same price as the cheaper brand, the least you can do for the school, just remember they have your kids for up to 6 hours a day teaching them with free of charge. So kinda dumb for you to say they have the “nerve”.

      • J

People have their own opinions. While certain name brand things may be better, I agree that paper is paper. Notebooks are notebooks..who really cares about the name brand on things like that?!?

      • jen

I’m sorry, but public school is not free, it is cheap. I pay $2000 a year in taxes for the school district. and crayola crayons never went 4/$1 like target or office store brands. If i have to replace them halfway thru the year that is still cheaper for me in the long run. and let’s please not get into name calling because i’m sure we are ALL guilty of some sort impatience and/or misunderstanding.

        • Karen

just a friendly fyi… the Crayolas do go 4/$1 at Toys r Us a couple of times in summer. Sometimes its unadvertised or comes in an email from them. It’s usually posted on blogs like this too. I have a big stash from last year still. And I do follow the teacher recommendations like fiskars sissors, ticondiroga pencils, Ziploc bags, etc. I figure why not, since all the deals are out there.

          • Heather B

Yep, at least twice that I recall!

          • Jennifer Mireles

Just a friendly FYI, not everyone has a toys r us near them & crayolas has never been 4/1 at any office store or Wal-Mart target or heb which is what we have locally

            • Dawn

Last summer, I price matched the 25 cent Crayola crayons from the Toys R Us ad at Target. No limit.

      • jr

I guess teachers are volunteers…they don not get a salary.

      • xirian

They do not have them free of charge. They are paid and residents pay taxes. I agree some name brand things (crayons) are better, but a sketch pad is a sketch pad, paper is paper, and none of it is going in a copy machine.

    • Bobbi

I ask for Dixon Ticonderoga pencils in my classroom. They have good erasers and sharpen well. You can use several cheap pencils during the time one Dixon Ticonderoga pencil lasts. Sometimes name brands actually save money in the long run, especially when you can find good deals on them.

      • Jackiw

They really help my son who is a lefty and has motor skill issues—and they seem to last longer, due to the way they are shaped the triangle ones LOL

      • Cat

Do you have hints or tips for getting good deals on the ticonderoga pencils? I never knew there was a difference in quality. I currently have a “buy price” of around 5 cents/pencils. I buy for charity, not for personal use, so I really need low price points.

        • Md

          Costco

    • Sara

When I worked in an office we could only use certain brands or the copy machine would mess up or jam with poor quality paper

    • JA

Neither of my kids have ever had huge supply lists but have occasionally had very specific ones. It was typically when they were very young and jealousy was common. If some kids had fancy Crayola twist up crayons and some kids didn’t, things could get ugly.

      • kimmy

I agree that Rose art pencils do not work as well as Crayola. However, my school would state Kleenex tissue, Ziploc bags. In those cases, generic is just fine.

  6. Holly

There are no limits (ie: .15cent folders)?! Really?
I know we can get the same folders at OfficeMax for a penny (limit 10), but with a $5 purchase.

    • Holly

And Office Depot (merging of stores).

  7. E

I’m so sick of the “teachers babysit your kids for free all these hours blah blah” argument. They CHOSE to go to school for this. Thankfulness is deserved but it’s no excuse for whatever the pretense of the comment is. Paper is paper. Crayola crayons may rock but if the kid is happy with Rose art so be it. It’s a freaking crayon.

  8. julie

You should feel blessed being able to buy school supplies for your children. There are alot of children that there parents can’t afford to buy them. I know that I feel blessed being able too.

    • J

I don’t think that’s the debate. People should be able to purchase the brands that they want. For example, I have to buy disinfectant wipes for my daughter’s classroom. If the CVS brand is on sale, why can’t I purchase that brand? While I will probably purchase name brands for school supplies, I understand what the person posting is saying.

      • Lauren

I know with wipes and crayons, some brands have ingredients in them that certain students with allergies can’t tolerate. I think that a lot of this could be avoided if things like this (or whatever reasoning a school has) were explained up front.

  9. ABriggs

School supplies are like everything else in life. You get what you pay for. If you want to buy cute pencils for your kids great, just plan on buying double the pencils because they sharpen terribly and the erasers are usually junk You can’t put the ones with the plastic coating in electric sharpeners like the one posted because they ruin them. Cheap glue sticks don’t stay glued. Cheap crayons rub off or you have to press really hard for them to work. I never cared what brands my students brought to school but you can always tell the difference in the quality. Kids with cheap supplies ask to borrow other student’s things. Paper is paper agreed. Same goes for notebooks and composition books.

  10. Karen

Anyone know if those staples pencils are any good? Compared to the ticondiroga…should I just pass and wait for the others to go on sale at Walgreens and Target?

    • Bobbi

I bought Staples pencils for my classroom last year when they were on sale. My students had trouble getting them to sharpen, so I won’t buy them again.

      • Rebecca

is that why I can’t get them to sharpen????? I had no idea it was about the quality of the pencil. I just thought it was my sharpener!! huh!! who knew!

  11. Maggie

Such debate over school supplies. I’m a teacher and although a high school teacher so I don’t really have a list of supplies kids are supposed to have like elementary teachers would provide, but if your child arrives to school with Rose Art crayons and not Crayola, as requested by the school, I suspect it won’t really be that big a deal as long as they have the materials. I’m guessing they just prefer the others. Frankly, even as a high school teacher, I’m happy that my high school kids show up with a pencil and paper period (and believe me MANY do not, which is why I take advantage of these deals because by the end of the year I am out of pencils and pens).

But on that note, I can’t believe you’re posting back to school sales already! Summer if FLYING by!

  12. Heather B

Everyone here is trying to get the most for their money, we all get that. And it may seem weird or unreasonable for them to be brand specific about some things but I’m sure they have a reason. It’s not like the school board sits around trying to think up ways to make parents jump through hoops. Let’s also remember that teachers bear the brunt of the cost to replace the children’s school supplies during the year due to school budgets. This to me seems more unfair than them specifying a particular brand to buy especially when supplies are regular price after school starts. Collin and her team do an EXCELLENT job of helping us find those supplies we all need for cheap so let’s try to be positive and thankful that we have a place that helps us save.

    • Samantha

Thank you. I agree that being finicky about brand is silly, but sometimes there are reasons for the specifications (and sometimes not). My husband is a first grade teacher at a lower income school and we budget $250 for back to school ALONE. While some children may show up with all the required supplies on day one, it’s unlikely that those supplies will last all year. Yes, he chose the profession, but it’s also important to realize that without teacher out of pocket spending, most classrooms would never make it all year with supplies. Thanks to Hip2Save, our supplies budget has gone a LOT farther! Thanks for the help!

      • Heather B

For this reason I pick up every item offered for under $.25 whether it’s on the list or not. I then donate it to my sons classroom, it may cost me an extra $10 at most but it helps the kids have what they need all yr long. I know everyone can’t do this but I know the teachers appreciate it

        • Lisa

Thank you, Heather B, for both comments. I’m of a like mind!

      • JDMommy

It’s too bad that you need to contribute out of your own pocket! Make sure you’re deducting that expenditure on your taxes!

  13. Hilary

I’m a parent, and educator, and I cannot believe the comments and horrible attitude coming from some of you. Wow. All over school supplies?! Get off the computer, get off the phone, go outside and play with your children.

    • Sammi

Can I like this a million times?!

  14. Jennifer

I personally think the sharpener is junk but we did have to sharpen like 100
Pencils so that may have something to do with it.

  15. Teetee20055

I really wanted those pre sharpen prices but it’s no reflecting $3 online. Darn.

  16. Janet

I have been in classrooms when I was a teacher in training where students will pick through the collective crayons and only use the crayons because the cheaper brands just does not color the same. If your child is only using their own crayons then it wouldn’t matter. If your kids have the cheap brands, they are probably using their neighbor’s crayon when they are in the classroom. I honestly say try using the crayon at home with your kids , if they don’t seen up to par for you then don’t bring them into the class even if they are discounted. Buy crayola, it’s Made is America!

  17. Kate

Mom of 4 here and I have sharpened a LOT of pencils over the years and from experience the cheap pencils do NOT sharpen well over time BECAUSE the quality is NOT THERE the lead is NOT lined up correctly in them so your children will be sharpening them forever to get a nice point. So if you spend a bit more in the beginning the pencils will last longer because they are made better savinging yourself money in the long run. Yes I LOVE to save money. This is something I have learned as a mom and now as a paraprofessional working in the schools. Just my 2 cents.

  18. Kate

Sorry saving. Just realized I misspelled saving in my previous post 😉

  19. Bethany

RSVP Fine Point pens are my favorite!!!! Highly recommend!!!

  20. Becky

The paper rebate is 4 per household, FYI. One coupon per order though so you’ll have to do separate orders.

    • Erin

Thank you! That’s what I was trying to figure out.

  21. Katie

I don’t see that the RSVP pens are $1 online. Anyone else happen to see the sale? I’d love to stock up on some. These are my favorite pens.

  22. Veggirl

I know some elementary schools don’t allow mechanical pencils, but if yours does, the best, in my opinion, are the Paper-Mate Clear Points. They are normally pretty pricey, but during the summer they usually hit $1 each. Sounds like a lot for a pencil, but that is the only kind I recommend for my college students. They have huge erasers that erase cleanly. Also, the leads don’t break as easily and the pencils have a comfort grip to ease hand fatigue. Highly recommended! I have found that these pencils lead to neater papers and a better shot at the correct answer. 🙂

  23. nicole

Quick question. …is anyone else having problems with the items showing up as the sale price once your ready to check out? Its actually changed mine to the original price. Please help:-(

  24. Tgrace

This conversation is really disheartening, we are talking about a minimal amount of money compared to yours and my our future leaders. If you are all debating (nicest word I could come up with) over what a school/teacher is asking get real. This just tells people what you think your kids are worth. I’m sure if you had look inside yourself, do you not us brand name for yourself and your needs. Give the teachers/schools a break and respect what they ask and move on. I’ve been buying school supplies for my local school and kids who cannot afford even to buy the cheap Pencils for the past 4 years. No I did not have a child in school, but I’m trying to help the next generation. Now if you buy crap for yourself, then please feel free, but if you buy good name brand then again respect the school and teachers and give them what they ask for. It’s once a year!

  25. Cheryl

Does anyone have the rebate offer number for the paper? It did not print out when I went but the rebate receipt did print out. Thanks!

  26. llc

I purchased lead refills for mechanical pencils at the dollar store (Bazic brand). They were so weak they would break every time I tried to write. I agree some of these cheapo products are worth the effort. I threw them out.
