Having trouble deciding on a 2DS, 3DS, or Wii U for our Mario-fanatic son who recently turned 5 years old. Any advice?
I purchased a 2ds for my 5 year old son last year for Christmas. It does play 3ds games but without the 3d feature. He loves it. One factor that made me go that route was seeing that 3ds is not recommended under a certain age. It can hurt the eyes. Forget the age 3ds is recommended for right now but check.
My son is now 5 and had a 3DS XL when he was 4. Even with a Nerf cover it broke because it’s more fragile than the 2DS. We replaced the 3DS XL with the 2DS and he has dropped it multiple times without a case and it works great still and looks great. All of the 3DS games work on the 2DS. The only thing that I think is missing is 3D feature which he never used in the first place. My 9 year old has a 3DS xl and doesn’t use the 3D feature either by preference.
Not to confuse matters more, there is new 3DS and 3DS XL. There are not too many New 3DS on the market in the US but they are selling as a bundle exclusively at TARGET for 149.99 https://www.target.com/p/new-nintendo-3ds-super-mario-3d-land-edition/-/A-51327765
The difference between the NEW 3DS and the 3DS XL is the actual size of the unit, the New 3DS is smaller than the 3DS XL and harder to buy in the states. I did all this research for my son because all he said was he wanted for x-mas Nintendo 3DS and it opened a book of worms. After doing all the research and asking him did he want it big or small I found the New 3DS to be the best value with the bundle, he wanted to be able to put it in his pocket. Hope that helps.
You can also use amibos on the 3DS XL, which you can’t do with the regular 3DS
My son does not use the 3ds feature either. It makes him sick. He calls it feeling “loopy”.
I’d get a 2ds or Wii. My newly 4 year old will be getting a 2ds for xmas. I have a 12 year old son too so we have lots of games. We have a WiiU too and it’s great. The 4 year old has gotten really good at Mario Kart recently. Like so good he sometimes beats his big brother good!
Anyone seen the 2d any cheaper than 79.99? that’s the one I’d like to get for my 4 year old!
FYI Nintendo is putting out a new console system in March, called “Switch”. It will probably be priced higher than the Wii U, though, but you can travel with just the handheld part of it.
I want the 2ds for my 4 years old daughter. I’m just wondering if it will become cheap on Black Friday. Any thoughts? TIA
That’s what I’m wondering too. You can buy a refurb one directly from Nintendo on eBay and it still has a 1 yr warranty for $69. I think I just might do that as if it’s deeply discounted on BF, it’ll be limited and I won’t stand in lines for hours for it.
I also would like a deal on a new 3ds XL for my older son. Hard to decide whether to wait or get it now.
I just bought the 2ds from Walmart this morning for $79.99 with Mario cart free download on it. Walmart has a 15 day return policy. If a good deal comes along in the next 15 days, I may consider returning it but I think a deal for the 3ds (XL) is more likely than for the 2ds! Let’s wait and see.
My 11yo son also wants a 3DS for Christmas. I’d love to get the 2DS because I really don’t like the idea of him playing in 3D, although I realize you can turn it off, but he really wants the 3. Anyone know if they typically have good deals closer to Christmas? Any idea on the average price point for Black Friday?
I purchased a 3ds xl for my son and it broke very easily. He’s very good with his games , then I purchased a 2ds and he’s had it going on 2 years no issues. He now wants a wiiu. He’s 10 by the way .
My son has had a 3DSxl for about 4-5 years and it still works and is in good shape. We bought the nerf case, and in the past year we haven’t had a case at all. You can turn off and lock the 3d part which is what I did. I liked the fact that no matter what ds game version he received – his system would play it. We did buy this before the 2DS was out.
We got our then 6 year old a 3ds xl for Christmas and it was a fair disappointment. Think the Lego games he was playing were a tiny bit difficult for him although he’s fairly good at Xbox 360 and one Lego games. I would think a wii would be a better and more group focused activity at that age and allow for help when needed.
