We do too. He is 10, nonverbal, severely autistic and wanders. I was thinking about using this for our front door but it opens inward so he could just kick it over. I just lock the door. He can figure out the door knob but not the locks. We also have to lock his bedroom door at night for his safety. This is a nice idea if your child can figure out your door locks. Just out of curiosity is your child autistic?
Her primary diagnosis is Prader Willi Sydrome which results in several other secondary problems (she is only 4….so she hasn’t figured out too many different locks yet)

I was thinking this might be great for my son, he has learned to open the front door. The other evening I came downstairs to find the front door wide open and him sitting and watching the rain in his wheelchair, dog out in the front yard. 😬 I might need this or something like this.
My son is a severe sleep walker and I think this would be great for the front door.
When my son was younger – he would sleep walk. I would hook small (Christmas) bells with string on the door frame over the door. That way if he were to open the door – The bells would fall and I would hear it.

We have a pool and several natural bodies of water within walking distance (a longish walk, but close enough). We also have a ton of kids + their friends, cousins, etc. We installed locks at the tops of all of our doors (including the pantry, cleaning closet, stairs down to basement, stairs to attic and our closet). They’re in the middle of the top of the door. Anyone under 5′ (maybe even taller, just an estimate) cannot reach it without a chair. Even with a chair most of the kids still can’t reach it. They are locked at all times, without fail. Their little lives depend on it.
In case of fire (we have both done rotations in burn units- we might be slightly paranoid)- we do keep a semi heavy object next to all windows, which we have lots of, that any of the kids over 5 or so are able to lift and throw through the glass to get out.
Just a thought for special needs families, it wasn’t a large cost to install the locks and it’s a very comforting peace of mind. We also have a security system, lots of cameras and a pool sensor.
I’m still thinking about grabbing one of these to put under bedroom doors when they’re supposed to be grounded and what not!
