Happy Friday: Summer Reading Perks at Your Library
Sent from reader, Jin:
I just wanted to remind Hip2save readers about the perks of signing up kids for the Summer Reading Programs at the local library.
This summer, I have enrolled my 6 year old son in the summer reading program at our local library in New Jersey. He enters his reading log on a sheet of paper and gets to pick up a prize every week. My son has been very excited, it gives him a feeling of achievement and so far he has won erasers, small toys and books.
I have been so impressed by how much the public libraries have to offer! I know most local libraries have some kind of reading incentive for kids and I just wanted to pass this message as a reminder to all the Hip2Save readers who have school aged children!
HAPPY FRIDAY!
Do you have a funny, “Hip”, or unique photo to share?! Email us at happyfriday@hip2save.com. Every Friday, we post one photo, submitted by a Hip2Save reader, that gives us a glimpse into their frugal lifestyle or simply makes us smile. If your photo is published on Hip2Save, we’ll email you a $10 Amazon e-card!
We LOVE the library summer reading program! My three girls have been participating in the program for several years now (they’re ages 13, 10 and 7). It’s definitely great motivation for the summer, though, I’m super blessed that they all love to read anyway…lol.
I take yoga class at library they are awesome. saves a bunch of money teacher is great
My 2 and 4 yr olds love the libtary as well. Just a note my librarian said most supplies like glue, stickers, stamps etc they use to do crafts she buys so might be good to ask and if you have stock pile from couponing good place to donate locally.
Today we had lunch out courtesy of our summer reading program. My daughters each received free meals as reading prizes at Isaacs Deli and my lunch was $6. Super fun summer treat!
We live in an area that has multiple library systems (different counties) and have discovered you can sign up with any of them, even if you aren’t a county resident. They all have great programs and rewards for the kids for doing their summer reading. I felt weird about signing up for multiple libraries, but my librarian in our town assured me that we should do it and enjoy all the library goodness we could.
Our summer reading program is awesome! Once my kids reach 24 hours of reading time they will each receive 2 tickets to a MLB baseball game. We’ve done this every year since it started and it’s an awesome incentive to do more reading.
My local library system also has an adult summer reading program. I won an Amazon Kindle in a drawing for those that participated!
Our library did baseball game tickets (we have a Post 45 league), mini golf game, toys, restaurant freebies, etc. This was our first year participating. Looking forward to it next summer!!
I read recently that public libraries were going to have a bunch of glasses for the solar eclipse to hand out. Check yours!!!
Half price books also has a summer reading program… $5 for reading 300 min and you can do it forgive and July and use the certificates by the end of this month…
My sister is a children’s library director at a group of city libraries and designs the children’s reading program each year. She works very hard to make programs worthwhile, find fun reading rewards and instill a love of reading in kids. So, in addition to the prizes, also check out the programs. Lots of free, fun entertainment & activities!
Also, a tip my sister gives is that many libraries have passes to zoos, museums, etc. that you can check out. You may have to wait and you can only check it out for a short time so others can use it, but it’s a great resource!
My daughter got a bundle of free kids meal coupons for completing the program at our library.

My daughter got to pick a book, and got to pick a prize from the prize board. She picked a free kids meal at Chilis.
As a Librarian, I just wanted to thank you for the post!
I live in a very large county (geographically the size of the state of RI) and while we have many branches around the county, the main branch is giving away free solar eclipse glasses as long as you have a library card! Check your local library.
Our library is great too! My oldest just finished up their summer program, he had a blast. They are having an ice cream finale next week. Unfortunately, our library will probably be closing, the town has budget issues & our city council members seem to already have made their minds up, one of them saying in an interview, “How many people actually use the library anyway?”
Our library gave us a bag filled with coupons for free meals at Chipotle, McDonald’s, free sundae at Applebee’s and some pencils and erasers for school. My daughter only had to log 5 books that she read. Such a nice way to encourage reading. My daughter actually enjoys going to the library already so this is a special reward for her.
