Interesting. We are looking to rent a car for an upcoming trip. I signed into my Amazon account and did a search and for my trip the total would have been $835 for the car selected. I signed out and tried again without the Amazon benefit and it was $791. I realize you get money back on the gift card, but it’s odd that the price is cheaper without the 30% discount applied.
After taxes and fees a lesser value car was still $200 more than the reservation I made thru Costco. I’d be leary of this “deal”.
Not such a great deal. Costco travel has the same car (Budget Rental) for $452.84 vs this deal (Avis) for $536.25 (plus get $80 gift card with Alexa).
I did a dummy local reservation and I found Amazon is a better deal:
9/13 – 9/15 – North Bergen, NJ – Economy car using Amazon – $93.18 total minus 20% gift card $18.63 – total $74.55
Without Amazon and no discount code – $97.49
Using a random discount code on Retailmenot – $88.87
Oh and to get the 20% gift card you need to use Alexa to make your reservation. If you have the app, you can add Alexa to your skills page and then enable it. Then you can tell Alexa “tell Avis I need a car in Boston”. If you complete it through the voice prompts, you get 20%.
How do you place this deal through Alexa?

Does the price quoted include fees? It’s half of what my current reservation is.
Probably hit or miss depending on your trip. Earlier today I had booked a minivan for Orlando for Thanksgiving via Citibank rewards. $225 via Citibank, $425 for same via Avis through Amazon. I kept Citibank.
Has anyone had any success actually getting the Amazon gift card? We returned our car on 8/4 and have yet to receive the credit, even after contacting Amazon (said I needed to call Avis) and calling Avis customer service twice.
They advertise the 20% back but only give 10% back (I’m a Prime member and Alexa customer). Plus I was scammed at the Dallas Lovefield location with an additional $70 charge for a toll pass that I didn’t ask for or receive. I had to call and get that taken off of my card. The person who corrected my bill even admitted that their sales folks do that because a lot of people don’t notice and they get bonuses. Won’t be using Avis again.
