80 Million Fortnite Accounts May Have Been Hacked
If you’re one of the 80 million Fortnite players around the world, due to a potential account hack, you may want to change your password soon.
That’s because Check Point Research recently discovered security vulnerabilities in the game’s login process that could have allowed a threat actor to take over the account of any user, view their personal account information, purchase virtual in-game currency, and eavesdrop on in-game chatter as well as home conversations. Yikes!
Here’s what an Epic Games spokesperson had to say…
“We were made aware of the vulnerabilities and they were soon addressed. We thank Check Point for bringing this to our attention. As always, we encourage players to protect their accounts by not reusing passwords and using strong passwords, and not sharing account information with others.”
To make accounts more secure, Check Point Research strongly advises (and Epic Games also encourages) for users to enable two-factor authentication. By doing so, and when logging into their account from a new device, the user is required to enter a security code that is then sent via email to the account owner.
According to Epic Games, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to change your password “using a strong password.”
When did this hack happen? My son just started using fortnite this past week and I’m wondering if his account is in jeopardy!! Ty
Just be safe. Change the password
It was recently. I heard about it on Wednesday. The news said the hackers were supposedly were able listen in on the conversations of people playing the games.
That’s so creepy and disgusting.
Have fun listening to my son. All he does is argue with his friends and say “that’s it, I’m done!”
All my son says is “WHAT?!!?! HOW?!?!?! HACKER!!!”
I’m so tired of hearing my son yell those exact words! lol
Mine too! I don’t know how it’s fun when all they do is argue!
Hilarious!! Same in my house🤣🤣🤣
Right, I don’t even want to listen to them play…… your trash …. hacker …… STOP ……
Lol – I feel like you are all in my house 😂
Gotta change my pass then
Check Point clarified it doesn’t mean eavesdropping on the hacked player, but that the hacker could present themselves as the victim and talk to the player’s friends.
My sons PlayStation account was hacked over two months ago. The hacker changed his password and email associated with his PlayStation epic games account, and Epic has yet to allow us access to that account even after multiple methods of verification to prove we were the account holders. They stated that they can’t change that email to our email and it was a ‘known issue’. Radio silence from them regardless of how many times we reach out.
Oh, wow! So your kid hasn’t been able to play since?!
My son had something similar, Xbox. They changed his user name but luckily not his password or email. They sent me a reset and I was able to get it changed. This was a few months ago. I was reading in the epic games forum that this has been a problem with lots of people. You may want to look there for an answer!
Lol!!! I was just thinking why would anyone want to listen to my son playing Fortnite with his friends?? They all make Jeffy voices and scream into their microphones. The hackers will have hearing loss after one night!
