Off topic a little but… I’m thinking about signing my 6 year old son up for karate. Does anyone have opinions, pro or cons, or their experiences with kids in it? I don’t know anyone personally whose kids have done it, just looking for a little feedback. 😀 Thanks!

My little boy has taken Martial Arts classes since he was 3. He’s 5 now and moved up to the 5-7 year old class. He loves it. Depending on the instructor, it can be a lot of fun. Starting so young, I feel like it helps them to focus and listen better in everything they do.

Sarah my 8yo daughter is in karate & absolutely loves it! It not only teaches self defense but also respect. They have some younger then her but this is her first year.

I just wanted to post a warning here that this show IS NOT for kids. I loved watching the original Karate Kid movies with my kids, ages 11 and 13, so we started watching this show together as well. The language is pretty bad, but the sexual references are above and beyond! I honestly couldn’t believe it how bad it was. In episode 4, they show the kids watching a grossly inappropriate movie, which is where we shut it off for good. Please be forewarned. I am so disappointed in this series. Not for kids! I’m trying to save someone from making the same mistake I made. Please read the reviews on Common Sense Media or somewhere else. I’m still mad at myself for putting my kids through this!!

Oh bummer! Thanks for the warning, Marni!

Yes I agree – not for kids- I think it’s geared for the adults who watched the original as kids

That is the part that I had to turn off for my family’s viewing as well. Parents be aware, I didn’t see anything redeeming in the first 4 episodes. I wish I had stopped it sooner.

Yeah, well it says TV-14. So…

      • Marni

Yes, but often that rating is for swearing and violence, which this also had plenty of. I am only pointing this out because this series is directly related to the original Karate Kid movies which were absolutely kid appropriate, and it also centers around telling the stories of teenage kids like the original movies, so I was honestly shocked and saddened by what I saw. I just was not prepared that this was coming and wished I had done more of my homework. No one to blame by myself!!

Neriesh, my son is 15, but I don’t want him seeing this. I thought we could enjoy it because there are plenty of tv-14 that we do watch. And I enjoyed the movies in the 80’s. I didn’t like how the teen girls were being portrayed or how the teen boys were watching porn together and just in general how the characters were treating each other. Just a parental preference. I thought it was worth leaving a review for other parents that might not realize that the show entails all that.

My SO & I love this series! It has the feel of the original, but has a few more laughs. So excited to own it! Thanks so much for posting.

      You’re very welcome!

Me too! And so does my 13 year old. I didn’t find it to be too over-the-top as far as sexual situations, and I am fairly conservative when it comes to what I’ll let her watch. Regardless, if you loved the movie when you were a kid, you will absolutely love this series as an adult. It’s so good that you actually find yourself rooting for Johnny Lawrence. I wasn’t an all out karate kid fan back then, but I am a child of the 80s, so if you are too, you’ll love it. Give it a try. You won’t be disappointed at all.
