Barbie Introduces First-Ever Doll w/ Hearing Aids
Mattel is introducing some of its most inclusive Barbie dolls ever, with several new additions to its popular Fashionistas collection. The brand offered a sneak peek of the new dolls on its social media, where the news was welcomed by parents and other Barbie fans.
CNN reports that the 2022 Fashionista collection will include dolls with the skin condition vitiligo, a doll with a prosthetic leg, and the brand’s first-ever doll with hearing aids coming to stores in June.
THANK YOU for understanding the importance of representation. My daughter is so excited that there will finally be a Barbie that has hearing aids like her. We have modified so many dolls so they have puff paint hearing aids but it is definitely not the same as being able to see her go into a store to purchase a doll that looks like her. Thank you!!!! ❤️😭🥰 – Instagram user _laura_ford_
Barbie’s Fashionista Collection now includes over 175 dolls, which have a “variety of skin tones, eye colors, hair colors and textures, body types, disabilities, and fashions.”
The stereotypical Barbie body type is changing to be more representative of society too. The new Barbie Fashionista dolls come in a variety of diverse body types, some with smaller chests and some with fuller figures. Ken dolls are getting a makeover as well, with more slender, less-muscular options available.
“This collection aims to reflect the diversity kids see in the world around them. It’s important for kids to see themselves reflected in the product and to encourage play with dolls that don’t resemble them to help them understand and celebrate the importance of inclusion.” – Lisa McKnight, Mattel Executive Vice President
