Bath & Body Works Return Policy Changing Soon (Find Out How It Will Impact You!)
The Bath & Body Works return policy may no longer accept returns “at any time.”
Bath & Body Works Return Policy Is Getting a Makeover. 🛍
Rumor has it that Bath & Body Works might be changing its popular return policy, and it may not be for the better. Currently, customers can “return anything, anytime for any reason.” This policy may change to only include new and gently used items.
According to a recent Reddit thread, your product cannot be less than half full if you want a return or exchange. And only even price point for price point exchanges will be allowed so you wouldn’t be able to trade in a candle for $24.99 for another priced at $26.99.
These policy updates are expected to roll out around September of 2022, so if you have any returns or exchanges, you might want to do it now.
Just how true is this rumor?
Hip2Save Sidekick, Liza, set out to find the truth. She spoke to a representative at her local store who confirmed that changes are indeed coming. The store doesn’t have ALL the updates yet, but they were able to tell us a few small details.
The return policy is truly changing, and the company will soon only be accepting returns on new and GENTLY used items. If you want cash back, make sure to save your receipt. Returning items without a receipt will be tracked using your government-issued ID and may result in receiving store credit. Other situations may also warrant a store credit but the store representative was unable to elaborate at this time. Reddit commenters have mentioned that receipts also will not be accepted after 90 days.
We are keeping our ears peeled and if we learn of any additional news, we’ll be sure to let Hip2Save readers know the scoop!

Honestly, I’m not surprised. There are plenty of videos on Tiktok that show people returning things upwards of 20 years old and receiving new products as an exchange. This causes others to try to do it too, which always results in changes of policy for the companies.
Yep! They have an excellent return policy but some people have no morals and take it to the extreme.
Wow! What a big surprise! I saw that coming a long time ago. Once again, a perfect example of what companies are forced to do when people abuse store return/exchange policies. It makes me so mad because it effects those of us who are loyal & honest customers!!
I was told each BBW could be different. My local one, told me,(years ago), that they will exchange items, but without a receipt, they will return it at the cheapest sale price, and the new item you want will be rung up at current price. They said this even applies for the same item, just different scent.
Thanks to ya’ll I got 8 three wick candles for 4.97 each…orange vanilla. I appreciate the heads up on sales.
YAY! SO happy to hear you grabbed some savings! Hope you enjoy your new candles, Bev! 🤗💞
I used to work for BBW in the early 2000’s and once had a lady that came in our store with a shopping cart and just about every single bottle she ever owned. Most bottles had like half inch worth of stuff left and logos from a decade previous and were so nasty you didn’t even want to touch them. She thought she was going to be able to exchange for all new everything and I flat out refused. I pulled out the big old sku book and looked everything up by hand that I could find and the rest I couldn’t find I gave her like $1 for. I was always more than generous with people, but that was flat out abuse. She wasn’t very happy, but she was lucky I gave her what I did. It’s not fair that everyone should have to pay higher prices in the long run for people like that. Or now suffer a policy change because of that type of customer. I’m just not sure how the exchanging for the same price part is going to go. That’s not quite as easy as it sounds plus it’s not a policy many other retailers use, that I am aware of. They will probably have to tweak that again down the road.
Good for them! I can’t believe it took this long to change it. I’m so tired of seeing people brag about abusing the current policy which just results in higher prices for all of us. If you aren’t happy with a purchase you know it and should do your exchange before 90 days and before you use half of it.
Some people go out of town or too busy & forget about returns. I always return unopened stuff bc buying the wrong thing not bc change of mind.Receipt still in bag with item but I get busy & toss the bag aside. Then when I remember to return, it’s 31 days or 91 days. Return refused. Sometimes returns aren’t just about you would know if u like it or not. Could be wrong item & forget to return
I just returned a candle that was purchased less than a year ago because 1 wick wouldnt stay lit. They did let me exchange for a sale candle. It was slightly more thsn half full and she said had it been burned anymore that could not have done the exchange. This was my first return at BBW. I was fine with that.
Good! It’s about time!
Just asking, from my personal experience with B&BW, why would anyone return anything? You have the opportunity to test it all, or smell each scent before you leave the store. If ordering online, I order what I’m familiar with.
Agreed! The only time I have ever returned anything was when I got a scent as a gift that I was not a fan of.
Could be a gift and you weren’t a fan of the scent.
I have a hard time smelling items in the store. It all smells the same to me. So, when I get it home, I am then able to tell if I like it or not. There have only been a few times I did return a candle or lotion because of this. The candles I return are unused and the lotion I have used a dab to see if I like it. My husband is super sensitive to smells, so I have to get him to smell also to see if it gives him a headache.
When there are sales you just buy whatever is left, then return it for the scent you actually want down the line. But it appears they may not allow that now- which would be very disappointing!
Yesterday I tried to do an even exchange for 3 unused candles, I just wasn’t fond of the scents. I didn’t have my receipt and the cashier told me I’d have to pay a difference of $6.38 per candle for 2 out of the 3. I was confused about it and she said that the policy had changed & she was going by the prices of the candles because I guess they aren’t all the same now but I felt that a difference of $6.38 per candle was too much!!! I don’t understand, why are some candles not the same price as others all the sudden?!? It just makes things more confusing!
Because you can’t test candles or wallflowers. Because their marketing encourages hauling and stocking up, so it might be 6 months before you try something out of the 100 things you bought at the time. Other than that, agree with the policy of not accepting significantly used items. I have not seen anywhere in the new, updated policy anywhere about 30-90 days as mentioned in this article though
This is not always true. I have used BB for over 20 years. Loved the product. About 15 years ago I lost my sense of smell, so I can not smell at all. When I try to get the sales associates to describe the smell they all just look at the ingredients on the bottle and tell me it smells like what ever is on the bottle.. And they are constantly changing the product.. So I have to buy until I can get someone who knows my taste to smell for me.. If they say oh no Ur not gonna like tht smell I have to return it. It’s not always convenient to return within a certain time…
Cat, yours is such a unique experience that I truly don’t think it represents the norm, by any means. I am so sorry to hear about your loss of smell, which I believe leads to a loss of taste. This must be frustrating. So sorry.
It is about time they did this. I understand if a pump doesn’t work or something is broken during shipping but to take back things just because you want new is so wrong and in the long run increase prices for everyone.
I have never returned anything that I’ve bought from BBW. The only thing I was disappointed with was the Eucalyptus & Spearmint 3 Wick Candle (The scent was a little too strong).
The only thing I have returned to BBW are 2 wallflower plugins that stopped working after a few months on separate occasions. The sales rep/manager was rude the last time I returned a Wallflower Plugin and told me “these are only meant to last a few months” so I was like, why doesn’t it say that on the package? I noticed recently that the website says the wallflower plugins last 2 years. I’ve had very few that lasted 2 years. I’ll continue to buy candles and body products from BBW but will now think twice about purchasing Wallflower Plugins with this change…. 100% Essential oil diffusers are safer for our lungs so maybe now is a good time for me to make the switch.
I agree, I have a wallflower right now I ordered this Spring and it already stopped working. I have one from last summer that stopped working too. I didn’t know I could return them so will be heading to the store for new ones. I bought the more expensive decorative ones so they were not cheap to stop working so fast. The one from last summer only worked about a month, I just happened to keep it because it was a cute turtle. I have only returned to BBW when I received an order where a wallflower refill busted in transit and ruined the whole box and everything inside was all oil. I took the box to our local store who took care of the problem. That order was shipped with no protection which is what caused the issue. I order all the time and that was the only time I had an issue. Great to know I can replace the wallflower units.
I stopped shopping at BBW years ago because their products are trash. I recently came back because of their return/ exchange policy. If this is true I’d feather spend extra for products I know I love, then to take the chances with BBW hit or miss item.
I recently for the first time ever returned a candle that only burnt black soot rather than the banana scent it was supposed to have. The manager allowed me to exchange it even though the return policy changed as a 1 time courtesy and I was fine with that and did appreciate it. One negative thing I will say about Bath & Body works is in regards to the free coupons they send in the mail.. for a free up to $8.50 etc.. Coupon comes to myself and husband.. and when we go to retrieve the free item with the coupons the sales people get SO UPSET and treat you as if your doing something wrong just going in the store to get free item like your taking advantage.. which sometimes causes an argument bc of the attitude I get.. Now mind you.. I spend HUNDREDS of dollars in that store per season on candles, wallflowers, bath & body items etc.. so obviously there is a reason why we get those coupons in the mail and shouldn’t get treated like your doing something wrong when your just trying to get the 1 free item that is very well DESERVED! Sometimes they even have a problem giving 1 to my husband and 1 to me bc were together in the store.. (when the coupon comes addressed to each of us). The coupon says free with NO PURCHASE NECESSARY!! So why do the sales reps get so upset over these coupons..? I will never understand why.. bc again we spend HUNDREDS of dollars in your store which is why they even have a job.. bc of the great products Bath & Body sells that are supported by ALL the customers that get these coupons in the mail. I Just thought I’d share in case anyone else has this same issue. These coupons seem to come right after I’ve already made my big purchase that season which is why I’m just using the Free coupon with no purchase. Please also note.. this is not in just 1 particular store.. it’s all of them that have a problem. These sales reps really need to adjust their attitudes when it comes to these coupons.
Sorry to hear about your experience with the free coupons, Michelle. My daughter and I use them often at our location and haven’t had any troubles. Hoping your next shopping trip with coupons goes more smoothly for you! 🤗❤️
I can not exchange my not using plug ins anymore so I taking all my refill back. Stay with yankee candle! Fan on there’s anyway
Honestly it changes me wanting to shop there anymore. We buy all our products there for our restrooms at our private school which is about 5 restrooms total. I always was grateful to be able to return if a pump wasn’t working as it should etc. I also buy for my home and love the shower gels etc. I just am horrible at keeping receipts. So now if you don’t have the original receipt they will try to give you $3.00 or less an item. I hate that others abusing the policy caused them to throw the baby out with the bath water. I tried to exchange a current item for the same item & they wouldn’t allow it because I didn’t have the receipt. So I guess I just have to keep a broken item. I will find other places to stock our restrooms.
Thanks for taking a moment to share how you’re feeling about their return policy Jerome. ❤️ I like to grab their shower gels and hand soaps too!
