If it’s just shedding/excess breakage, it could also be from the way you style your hair. Tight ponytails, buns, and slick backs can increase shedding/breakage. Switching to more forgiving elastics or silk hair ties can help a ton! And try not to brush too roughly or style your hair when it is very wet. Quality hair brushes can help.
Also, be sure to use heat protectant before every single hot tool you use! (Dryer, straightener, curler, etc.) I love this Eva NYC spray and this Kristin Ess! – Monica, Hip Sidekick

And sometimes, hair loss might win the battle, but with a few tricks, you can still win the mirror…

I’ve tried it all, and ultimately, nothing has truly worked, but some products do help to mimic thicker hair. I use the Style Edit sprays and Boldify root powder (or really any brand similar that is on sale), and those help since my hair is dark and my hair is the thinnest on top. – Angela, Hip Sidekick

Here are a few more things to know before you start your hair growth journey:
Do hair growth products work?
Yes, many hair growth products work, but their effectiveness depends on the individual. Also, keep in mind that some hair growth products may only improve scalp health or strengthen existing strands without introducing new growth.
What are some natural products for hair growth?
Rosemary is one of the top natural products for hair growth, and studies show it works as well as Rogaine, with less scalp irritation. Rice water, rich in nutrients and inositol, has been a beauty secret in Asia for centuries. And don’t overlook nutrition—deficiencies in vitamins like D, B12, and zinc can trigger hair loss. Eat well or consider supplements for stronger, healthier hair!
What are some causes of hair loss?
Some common causes of hair loss include genetics, hormonal changes, medical conditions such as scalp infections, high fevers, medications and treatments, stress, nutritional deficiencies, hairstyles (ie. tight buns & ponytails), rapid weight loss, age, etc.

Remember, you’re not going through this alone ❤️ We’ve been there too, and we’ve learned a lot that we’re happy to share…
One of the best things to keep in mind for hair growth (when there aren’t other health issues tied to it) is to prioritize scalp health! Increasing blood flow with good hair brushes, oiling, scalp serums, etc. Additionally, they say increased shedding (if it’s just shedding) can be because the hair itself is weak, so strengthening products or oiling can help, along with a good hair mask. Whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and increasing omega-3s through fish or nuts won’t hurt either. – Monica, Hip Sidekick
It’s so frustrating when your hair starts thinning, but she’s definitely not alone; it’s super common in your 40s. In some cases, it could just be stress, hormone changes, or something medical. Therefore, the best first step is to check in with a dermatologist to rule out anything medical and get a clearer picture of what’s going on and how to move forward.
It’s also SO common… and frustrating, I really hope she finds something that works for her! Keep in mind that hair loss can also be seasonal. For example, I tend to lose more hair closer to summer, so that could be something to watch as well. As another option, cutting just a little length off and layering a bit, even at the ends, can get rid of some weight that may help her hair look fuller too. – Cass, Hip Sidekick
A root issue almost always causes hair loss, so figuring out and addressing the issue from the root cause would be her best approach, and it’s likely tied to hormone imbalances. As an example, food plays one of the biggest roles. For myself, even eating organically and locally grown food and meats, it’s still so hard to get the necessary nutrients and minerals our bodies need to thrive because food just isn’t what it once was. I would highly recommend beef liver capsules from a local farmer and shilajit, which supports your body at a deep cellular level. Other things I’d recommend evaluating are toxin-exposure levels in current products, assessing quality of sleep, avoiding excess products/or heating tools, scalp massages to encourage blood flow, and doing things to regulate your nervous system (grounding, yoga, meditating, etc.) – Sara, Hip Sidekick
As for me, I’ve always thought that too much of my hair was coming out in the shower and after brushing. I switched to a filtered showerhead — I went with Canopy after doing a lot of research on the different brands. It was a splurge (though they do run sales here and there), but it’s worth every penny to me as I’ve seen a shockingly noticeable improvement in how many fewer strands come out while washing and just the overall health of my hair and skin. I’m also a big fan of the Dr. Groot scalp and bonding haircare products, and there are occasional sales on those as well. – Emily, Hip Sidekick

For the last two years in August my scalp started itching around the back of my head and I start losing hair in the area. Not sure what caused it but this year I’m going to be proactive ahead of time. Lots of good info on this post! The only thing I’ve tried that you mentioned is Mielle’s Rosemary & Mint Oil which seemed to irritate my scalp, I assume from the rosemary. I’m going to go ahead and start the supplements and products now that you suggested! Thanks!
Sorry to hear about that, Leslie. You’re so welcome! Hoping they help! ❤️
Hip2Save, I love you all much. But please stop pushing hair growth products. Nothing has been proven to work except maybe minoxidil. Maybe these products make the hair shaft fuller and more healthy. Maybe vitamin products help with hair strength. But this is not the same as growth. I realize that you get revenue by promoting these products. But it makes you all kind of the same as the product manufacturers themselves.
I can not imagine how much money I have spent on hair growth things that did nothing
Maybe instead you can introduce Hip2save readers about wearing hair This is a game changer. I feel so much more confident in my hair toppers. And a better use of my money.
Hey Leslie — thank you so much for taking the time to share this. I totally hear you. Hair loss is such a personal (and often emotional) journey, and it’s frustrating how many products out there overpromise and underdeliver. You’re absolutely right — not everything works for everyone, and it can be discouraging (and expensive) trying to find the right fit.
I love that hair toppers have been a game changer for you. That confidence boost is everything. 💛 I actually shared my own experience with hair toppers over on Instagram, and it’s saved in our highlight bubble here if you ever want to check it out:

We also put together this roundup of hair topper options on the site, in case it’s helpful for others going through the same thing:

And just to share some behind-the-scenes — we have a whole team of different women (with different hair types and struggles!) who personally test and review the products we feature. A lot of what ends up in these posts are things we’ve genuinely tried and loved, not just random picks. We always try to share a variety of solutions, and I really appreciate you chiming in and offering another helpful perspective. 🫶
Thank you for this reply. That helps. But your title is still misleading. Or maybe put your disclaimer that you put here up above. Some of the money i wasted was from Hip2save suggestions. I think companies prey on women who are aging and losing hair. It is sad. Especially those gummy vitamins you posted. Probably just overpriced biotin if you read the comments.
And link to your hair topper post too. Many women don’t realize this is an alternative. I joined a hair loss group on facebook when I was depressed and desperate and after I had spent lots of money on scams and vitamins and oils.
Don’t overlook two lifestyle changes that can impact hair: sleep and stress. Last Saturday I attended a 4-hour conference on hair and scalp disorders (for health care professionals) and was surprised at the impact presented by lack of sleep and high stress on our hair. It was all science-based of course, and they mentioned so many supplements and over the counter products do not work. The conference was co-sponsored by Cerave and I learned they offer a new anti-itching shampoo and conditioner that is reasonably priced. It happened to be the last day I could edit my Sub n Save order from Amazon so I ordered both for my dry hair and hope they help. I’ve loved all the Cerave products I’ve tried and I’m very reluctant to try something new just because it’s trending. So maybe for starters, try increasing your sleep and decreasing your stress (good luck with that!) if you can.
I appreciate this post since it gives various options to help with hair loss! Overall, it’s up to the consumer to do their research before spending money on pricey treatments. (This may involve talking to a demotologist). Yes, there are a lot of scams out there. But I feel Hip2Save is genuine with how they influence readers.
Thanks so much for the kind words and thoughtful feedback, Lisa! 💗 We’re super happy to hear you found the post helpful and really appreciate your trust in us!
