Lucy is a rescue pup, and we are assuming full standard poodle, but it will be interesting to find out more about her. This process was very easy and straightforward. Today I sent back the DNA test and it was really easy to swab our pup Lucy and send back the kit with the included return envelope. – Hip Sidekick, Lina
Update: We got the results back a couple of weeks later and confirmed she is 100% poodle. The most fun part was seeing her relatives in the system. They were a mix of other rescues and show dogs. It highlights the sad reality of irresponsible breeders who dump puppies when they don’t sell. The results came in a couple of weeks, and the whole process was easy and seamless. It gave us just a little insight into her history before us.
My puppy, Calliope, came from 2 rescued mixed stray dogs that we knew nothing about. I decided to do the Embark DNA + Health Test so I could learn more about her breed mixes and traits, as well as any potential health risks. There were some big surprises in her DNA results! (We thought for sure she was part Great Pyrenees and had some Shetland Sheepdog, German Shepherd, and Border Collie, based on the appearance of her parents; however, there is no Great Pyrenees or Border Collie! It turns out she is mainly Husky, Lab, Pitt, Chow, Shetland Sheepdog, and German Shepherd, plus over 30% Supermutt, meaning she has small percentages of many other breeds too.)
Knowing her main breeds & their traits has been SO helpful in understanding her personality and with training. It was also comforting to find out that she had no major health concerns. It only took a couple of weeks to get her results back, and Embark emails you every step of the way and shares some helpful insights when you receive your results. I would definitely recommend Embark! – Hip Sidekick, Misty
We’ve done this for all of our rescued German Shepherds. This is a very cost-effective way to test for breed-specific genetic issues that your vet will want to know about — all GSDs should undergo these tests even if they’re not going to breed (e.g., you need to know about MDR1 before any surgery, as 10% of the breed carries the gene and it can cause dangerous reactions to certain anesthesia drugs). It’s cheaper to do them this way as a bundle than to send off individual tests. The breed and “find your dog’s relatives” part is cute, but the health information is really important. – Hip Reader, Maggie
These tests are great ways to learn more about your rescue dogs. We have used them before and would easily recommend them. They can also reveal really interesting, and sometimes even humorous, results – we have a 20lb mutt who is a mix of many dog species, but it turns out he is 1% Tibetan Mastiff. Now we know why he insists on going into the “big dog” side of the dog park! We’ve also given them as gifts to fellow dog lovers. – Hip Reader, Lisa
