Why are more people investing in natural fiber clothes?

Choosing natural fiber clothing isn’t just about comfort—it’s also about protecting your health. Fabrics like cotton and linen are breathable, hypoallergenic, and gentle on the skin, making them ideal for daily wear.
Synthetic fabrics, on the other hand, are often made from petroleum-based polymers and treated with chemicals such as formaldehyde resins or dyes that can off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which may trigger skin irritation or allergic reactions in some people. They also shed microplastic fibers during laundering, which enter waterways and food chains—raising concerns for both environmental and human health.
Natural fibers also provide unique wellness benefits—linen, for example, is naturally antibacterial, moisture-wicking, and cooling, helping to soothe sensitive skin and support overall well-being. By choosing natural fabrics, you reduce exposure to these hidden chemical and microplastic risks while surrounding yourself with materials that are safer and more supportive for your skin and health.

What are natural clothing fabrics?
Natural clothing fabrics are textiles made from fibers that come directly from plants or animals rather than being synthetically manufactured from chemicals.
Plant-Based Fibers:
- Bamboo – Naturally antibacterial and moisture-wicking
- It can be processed into soft fibers
- Cotton – Soft, breathable, moisture-absorbing
- Widely used for t-shirts, dresses, and underwear
- Hemp – Durable, breathable, and eco-friendly
- It can be blended with cotton for softer textures
- Jute – Strong and coarse
- Mostly used for bags, ropes, and outerwear
- Linen (Flax) – Lightweight, breathable, naturally antibacterial, and cooling
- Often used in summer clothing and casual wear
Animal fibers:
- Alpaca / Yak / Camel Hair – Warm, soft, and hypoallergenic options for sweaters, coats, and scarves.
- Cashmere – Soft, luxurious wool from cashmere goats.
- Silk – Smooth, lightweight, and breathable; comes from silkworm cocoons.
- Wool – Warm, insulating, and moisture-wicking; comes from sheep, alpacas, and other animals.

Love this post! I’m trying to find sites that sell quality pieces
So glad to hear you enjoyed this post, Lisa! Thanks for commenting! ❤️
So grateful for this post–I am sensitive to almost all fabrics except cotton. You have given me several new sources to explore. Many thanks!
You’re very welcome, Olgraygirl! Happy to hear this post was helpful for you to explore some other options! 💖
YAY! Thank-you for talking about natural fiber clothing! I have sensitive skin and always am tempted to buy the cute deals you post on here but they are almost always poly or polyblends. I would love to see deals for natural fiber clothing again! PS some internet rumors say that Quince isn’t actually that great and the quality isn’t as high as the influencers are saying. Any real life people want to chime in?

This is from an elderly lady so take the advice with a grain of salt. Raid your grandmother’s/ great grandmother’s linen closet and cedar chest. Find a good seamstress and there are some still around. I have seen nothing in the new stuff that comes close to the quality of vintage. You will have clothing that others will envy. I will say I don’t miss ironing cotton. The men’s dress shirts were the worst.
Thanks for asking about Quince! I wanted to hear from others too. I’ve heard from a friend that their quality has gone down in the last couple years but that was for sheets. She said that after a few months they get holes. She did say that their customer service was great about handling it, but she was irritated that the originals and replacement sets got holes.
I bought one of their $50 cashmere sweaters. It is thin. I have charter club brands from Macy’s that were a higher price point on sale ($100) and they are much thicker.
I bought a cashmere sweater from there and it is my only cashmere sweater that has gotten holes. Super disappointing. I threw it away.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment, Amy! I love talking about natural fibers too! And I totally get where you’re coming from. Just to be upfront, even though you may see me as an “influencer,” I don’t get paid more or less to share about specific brands — I just share pieces I genuinely like or think are a good value.
I don’t personally own any other cashmere to compare my Quince one to, and I would absolutely expect the quality of a $300 cashmere sweater to surpass a $50 one, but for those who are shopping on a budget, I do think Quince offers great options. I’ve also had their bamboo sheets for years (the same set!) and they’re still my favorite — no issues so far. Of course, everyone’s experience can differ, but their return policy is excellent, so I think it’s worth trying if you’re curious. 🙂
Love this – comfort is the new success
Glad you enjoyed this post, Jg!
I want the shoes- where are those?
Hi there! That exact style of Birdie shoes is no longer available – Bummer! Sara scooped them up on Mercari. They have a very similar style and color here! Hope that helps! 🤗
Has anyone bought the socks? Do they stay up? Thanks!
More posts like this, please! But better deals if possiblr
Thanks for the request, JL! We’ll keep watch for any deals that might pop up on these items. 💗
