I am super happy with this game. I’m a huge fan of classic Sonic, and if you loved the Genesis era then this game is a no-brainer. The gameplay is fun, looks great on the OLED, and the co-op is a lot of fun if you have someone to play with.
The title says it all, Sonic Superstars is like the “New Super Mario Bros.” of 2D Sonic games. Plays like the classics, but looks and feels more modern. The levels are great, the colors and graphics are charming and vibrant, but most importantly it just feels right. This feels like a proper 2D Sonic game, just with new graphics and some updated ideas. I know some of the professional reviews have criticized how poor the multiplayer is or how some of the other game modes are a bit slight, but none of that matters to me. I wanted a proper, modern-looking update to the Genesis-style games and Sega and co. absolutely nailed that. If that’s what you want, Superstars should make you very happy. It’s like Mania but with 3D graphics. Great level design. Old-school Sonic fans will love it. Also, it runs great on the Switch, good frame rate and all that.
