Can someone explain to me the apparent obsession with these squishmallows? They look like expensive stuffed animals, but I guess they are really popular this year? At least, that’s what all the ads and deals suggest. What am I missing?

They’ve been around for a couple of years now and are gaining lots of traction this year, Mandy. I wasn’t sure what the big deal was either. I did get a giant one and they are nice. They are super squishy as a pillow and you can mold them into a shape if you need. I have a giant one from Costco that I use on my couch as a backrest. My 17-year-old stole it from me and now sleeps with it.

They’re popular with tweens – at least mine. They’re like stuffed animals but filled with a super squishy/cuddly stuffing. They’re cute, the company constantly releases new styles and retires old ones and they’re trendy. They’ve been popular for the last couple years but demand exceeded supply so they were pretty scarce for a while. Like many things, once they’re perceived as hard to find and certain styles are considered rare/collectible everyone buys them whenever they see them, which makes them harder to find and thus even more desirable.
I grabbed a few around Thanksgiving for my daughter but lately I’ve seen them at Walgreens, 5&Below and Target without much effort. They’re not very expensive at retail price, $5-$20 typically, depending on size.

I discovered them a few years ago and thought they were really cute. They wash REALLY well and can be dried in the dryer. They have not lost their shape and color and my niece brought one to her daycare and kept one at home – they travel well (the small ones). They are ridiculously soft too. My toddler got a Star Wars one as a gift, one of those huge ones, and he uses it like a crash pad. I think the quality of it is phenomenal to be honest. I don’t think I’d personally pay $60 for one of the gigantic ones, but I understand why it might be that amount based on the listed qualities and especially now that they have become more popular.

I completely forgot to mention how well they wash, chenga57! Thanks for bringing that up. Even my giant one washes great! I paid $22 for my giant one and it was well worth it.

My kids love them. I read an article about a dad who’s child passed from brain cancer and the only pillow they could put their head on was a squishmallow. He now how’s a charity to raise money for squishmallows for cancer patients. I then looked at them differently as I was in an accident 2 years ago and I am always in pain especially when I try to sleep. I started sleeping with the squishmallows between my knees, hugging with my arms, with my head on them and they are just so comfortable, very different than a regular pillow. I recommend them to everyone.

I think our elf is going to bring these this year in place of Christmas pajamas, for something different! Thanks for sharing!

That’s a really good idea and they can still snuggle up with it!

My tween is obsessed with these this year. We’ve bought them before and she liked them, but this year it’s all about the hunt. They’ve started to do exclusive series for different retailers and that is contributing. The resell value on a lot of them are ridiculous. We have several that go for over $100 that I found on sale or for retail. She’s getting a ton of them for Christmas this year. They are going to need their own room! 😉
