This DIY kindness jar craft is such a fun way to let someone know how much they’re appreciated!
Consider making a kindness jar filled with positive compliments and kind words they can keep and read over and over again! This DIY craft is such a powerful and thoughtful boost of positivity for anyone to enjoy – and sometimes kind words can be a priceless gift we can all use.
This DIY kindness jar craft can be a creative group activity. In fact, we made these at our Hip2Save team retreat as a team-building craft. All of us filled messages of encouragement and compliments for each team member.
This can also be done on an individual basis instead and would be a thoughtful gift for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or for your kids/grandkids on their birthday.

I love that all you really need is a mason jar (only $1 at Dollar Tree!) and paper for this craft, and the rest is really all up to you! We used ribbon to embellish jars and cut scrapbook paper into smaller pieces to write our kind words on. I set out markers and pens for everyone to use. It was an EASY project!
Hip Tip: A craft paper trimmer is a handy tool to cut pieces of paper for projects like this quickly!
I made adhesive labels for each of our names using my Cricut vinyl cutting machine. I transferred them to the top of each lid using transfer tape. This is, of course, optional, but it’s a fun detail to add.

I also had a roll of black chalkboard vinyl and chalk markers available for people to cut their own labels and stick to the front of the jar. These jars actually have a nice, flat square on the front, perfect for labels!
DIY Kindness Jar Craft
PrintSupplies Needed
- glass jars with lid
- scrapbook paper, cut into smaller squares
- scissors or paper cutter
- markers, pens, etc.
- ribbon to decorate jars
- chalkboard adhesive for labels
- vinyl name decals *optional
Directions

Assign a jar for each person. Make a label for the lid if desired. (I used my Cricut vinyl cutter to make each name decal for the lid.)

Cut smaller pieces of paper. Write a word or encouragement or compliment for each jar using a marker or pen. They can be anonymous or not. Fold paper and place in each jar.

Decorate each jar as desired with a ribbon and label or stickers.

We each ended up with about 16 nice, handwritten comments per jar! I was so busy during the retreat that I didn’t sit down to read my messages until after I was home. I sat and drank my coffee one morning and read these, and OH MY GOODNESS… what a special treat! I will always keep these on my desk to read when I need some positivity. Also, I LOVE my coworkers so much, as they ALL are so sweet and supportive! 💖
My daughter actually received a version of this at school – after her ‘famous person’ speech, all the kids wrote something positive about her 5th-grade oral report. Those were so FUN to read, and what a nice sentiment.
It’s such a fun and easy craft with so much meaning!

Several years ago we were pretty broke at Christmas time and I saw this craft. I have made a jar for all of my children, their spouses and a few family friends. They always bring tears to the eyes of the recipient. I tailor the notes to the person or what they are going through. I never thought much about it until one day I was out with my son and a slip of paper fell out of his wallet. One of the notes I wrote him really struck a cord with him so he kept it in his wallet to remind himself. It is a wonderful gift to give someone.

sweet. a little note can mean so much. my daughter had a presentation and real anxiety about it, i put a little note of encouragement in her lunch box. a few years went by and she needed a new phone case, when she took her old case off the note fell out. she promptly put it inside the new case. touched my heart that I was able to touch her heart…not easy to do with a teenage girl

My kids have had teachers that have had them do “compliment cards” instead of Valentines. They write compliments for each student in their class. It’s such a positive activity for the class! I’ve saved several that they’ve received over the years.

Evan, my daughter is 21, and she has Aspergers, and a light speech issue, as well as anxiety..she is also very small. she was mercilessly bulled in middle school…terrifyingly so, and shoved in her PE locker naked and left there on one occasion. It was a special kind of hell. All i can say is do whatever you can to get her out of that school, because it will not change, it will not get better, and the school will not protect her. I moved my daughter to another school for 7th through 12th grade and she found her people,found her passion, and found her life, because I truly believe if I had left her in that situation, she would not have survived. good luck, hugs and love

This subject is so near and dear to my heart, as I have two older children that were bullied in Middle school very badly and I’m very concerned about him.
